Do you have an SUV? Which one, and go you recommend it?

Were about to replace our ancient Vauxhall Zafira. Will get an SUV style car, 1-3 years old, but not sure which...
I hired a VW Tiguan for the day recently and loved it, so comfy, but we probably need a bigger boot.

What do you have? Do you recommend it? Particularly keen to hear about Land/Range Rover. Or anything really.

Thanks for any thoughts.

If you can hold off until the new year, I would. Second hand prices are falling through the floor

Yes, I said so to DH.
I'm seeing lots of reductions already. Plus with COL, Christmas etc. I'm sure prices will be more favourable in January.
Not sure I can wait, though!

I have a Jaguar F Pace and I love it!

Before that I had a Ford Kuga and I loved that too.

MrsSeveride · 27/11/2023 18:15

I have an X1 too, @SingingSands and similarly don't recognise @PilatesPeach 's points

I've driven/owned 1 series' and the X2 and I would say fair enough if it was about either of them - but the X1??

We have a Renault capture. I wouldng recommend it to be honest.

busnumbernine · 27/11/2023 18:18

Another vote for the Honda CRV, loads of room and can fit three adults in the back seats.

DejaVoodoo · 27/11/2023 18:22

@MrsSeveride
So, if you don't agree with those comments, does that mean that the sitting position of the X1 is normal SUV height? If it is, it's back in the running!

I've told DH that Land/Range Rover are out. He's angling for the Jaguar F Pace. I have casting vote though, as it'll be mainly my car (as well as being the family/holiday car.)

Audi Q5 and absolutely love it

Buy now. Prices will not be more favourable in Jan. that's when we all put our prices up and it's our busiest month.

Mummyme87 · 27/11/2023 18:29

Really depends what your needs are.
we have had two VW tiguans and they’re great, although have needed a roof box a few times at Christmas or when youngest was a baby with a pram. We have a 9yr old and almost 6yrs old, plus a small dog. We are due to have another baby in 6weeks and need a bigger car with more space and looking at Volvo xc90.

it also depends on your budget… there’s a massive difference between the Skoda karoq and a Volvo in price…

I’ve got a yeti, it was one of the last ones off the production line and 66 reg so probably too old for you. It’s been a bloody brilliant car and so was my previous Yeti. The newer Skodas are well worth looking at. I test drove both a Karoq and a Kodiak and they were lovely cars but didn’t have the quirky feel of my yeti so I didn’t go for it… I will though in the future.

Caspianberg · 27/11/2023 18:39

If you liked the Vw Tiguan, look at the vw Id4 for electric version . It’s built on the same wheel base and is very similar size. The boot is a great size

We have a Jaguar F-Pace and LOVE it! We initially got it when it was just DH and I because he’d had some back problems from his previous car. We now have a dog and baby and always have plenty of space 😁. We ruled out Land Rovers because of extortionate insurance as we live in London. The jag isn’t so bad.

My husband had an F-Pace and while it was a lovely car to look at we had nothing but trouble with it and in the end Jaguar had it back and he bought another Audi. The Jag was also an absolute bitch to park in the supermarket as it was so wide.

DejaVoodoo · 27/11/2023 18:45

Does anyone have experience of the Tiguan Allspace? It's a longer version with bigger boot, and two extra foldaway seats.

I think the regular Tiguan is too small, sadly.

I won't comment on what I like as that's specific to me so irrelevant, however as a small independent dealer i would say this has been our experience

Avoid:-
Mercedes (by a long mile the most problematic brand for us which surprised me)
Land Rover and range rover
Nissan
Anything French
Vauxhall
Dacia

We have found reliable and don't have as many warranty claims:-
Toyota
Lexus
Volvo
Honda
Ford

Volkswagen we have found middle of the road for reliability which also surprised me, I expected them to be one of the best.

This has been based on the last 3 years I would say. And we sell used cars of all brands £4000-50,000.

DejaVoodoo · 27/11/2023 18:47

Thank you so much @toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 that's very helpful.

I'm surprised about the reliability (or not) of the VW.

I used to have a Discovery. I loved it. When they run they are absolutely brilliant, you literally can get through anything, tow anything or carry anything, it was a fantastic car. But it did like to go wrong and I no longer needed a full on 4x4 so got a BMW 5 series touring instead, which likes to just get on with stuff and it’s on road performance is streets ahead of the Disco.

I really don’t see the point of the 2WD faux SUVs though, you don’t get the road holding of a lower car and you don’t get the bad weather/off-road capability of a proper 4x4. If you’re going to get one get a proper one.

Cherrysoup · 27/11/2023 18:55

Not a Range Rover! They are the favourite of thieves currently, so insurance has doubled for owners in some cases (DH is police, he was dealing with yet another boosted RR last night)

I have an old shape X trail, huge boot, can't find anything with as much space so am keeping it forever. I have 3 medium size dogs and I like the amount of crumple space.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/11/2023 18:56

Jaguar and Landrover are the same company now, many of their vehicles share the same platform and engines so if you’re put off by the LR reliability stories make sure you check which engine your Jag has actually got.

Also, join the owners Facebook page for whichever car you end up with. Very helpful. Obviously you mainly get the 10% of cars with problems as opposed to the 90% of cars that run absolutely fine but they’re quite useful and usually quite knowledgeable people on there. Any group like LR, Volvo, Audi, BMW will have you running for the hills if you believe all the horror stories but remember they are in the monitory. Most people don’t post to say that their cars are running fine again today.

The thing with the faux suv shaped cars is the higher driving position which imo is much safer than lower, smaller cars. I also find people more considerate when I’m driving a bigger car. I had to drive my daughters corsa recently and the amount of aggressive, vile men on the road really shocked me - I’d forgotten that behaviour since driving a bigger car!

That said, my 2wd yeti is shocking in the snow although I’ve been driving them round farms and fields for 10 years with no issues at all.

LoveStHelier · 27/11/2023 18:58

i have a Hyndai Tucson ultimate and love it. So nice to drive.

Whalewatchers · 27/11/2023 19:09

Everyone with children survived in a 'regular' car before these overblown, unnecessary (on the whole) SUV's turned up.

I'd look at something like an Octavia or Superb personally for plenty of interior and boot space and great reliability.

GoodnightJude1 · 27/11/2023 19:16

We’ve got a Lexus RXL and I can’t fit everything I want in it….

even my DH sometimes 😀

GoodnightJude1 · 27/11/2023 19:17

*can….not can’t 🙄

SomethingAboutNothing · 27/11/2023 19:17

I love my Mazda CX5, great boot size, very comfortable. But my DH doesn't think it is powerful enough (think it's a 2l engine) and it is quite thirsty! He can stick to his own car though, I'm keeping it.
