Do you have an SUV? Which one, and go you recommend it?

Were about to replace our ancient Vauxhall Zafira. Will get an SUV style car, 1-3 years old, but not sure which...
I hired a VW Tiguan for the day recently and loved it, so comfy, but we probably need a bigger boot.

What do you have? Do you recommend it? Particularly keen to hear about Land/Range Rover. Or anything really.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I had an xc90 and absolutely loved it. Gone for something smaller this time but really miss my Volvo.
Had an Audi A7 before that and really didn’t want to change it but needed the flat boot for the dog.

Bmw x5, amazing space inside and super reliable, not too juicy considering bhp. Stay away from range rovers unless you have endless pots of money. Sportage are also great, I know lots of people really happy with them and the service from Kia. VW Touareg is also roomy. Bigger than the Tiguan.

We have a Mitsubishi ASX which is a smaller SUV but a great size for us (2 adults, 2 kids). My husband had a Mitsubishi Colt years ago and I was reluctant to get another Mitsubishi because I found the colt really difficult to drive but I love the ASX and would only get rid of it for a newer model. It’s big without being too big, good size boot, comfy for the kids and we’ve never had an issue with it

Mazda CX-30 is a 'compact SUV' but it spacious and I love it!

Knowing your budget might help, OP.
We owned a Mercedes M Class (GLE predecessor) until 2 weeks ago and I loved that car. Comfy, spacious. Was 14years old though and started to get some issues so we part exchanged it for a Volvo XC60. It's great so far but a little bit smaller than the Merc. Very comfortable to drive and it has built-in booster seats which are handy (family pack). If we could have afforded to I'd have gone for the new model XC90 but we don't need 7 seats and DH was made redundant so we had to be careful with budget.

From my research Land Rovers are extremely unreliable (there's a reason you can pick them up cheaply second hand) so they were out. Volvo's seemed to score well on reliability and practicality (as well as comfort) so that's what won it for us.

Discovery Sport. Fantastic to drive, good mpg, very roomy, smaller than the full fat Disco so easier to park but roomier cabin than a Range Rover. I know some people have had issues but you’d get that with any make these days. I bloody love mine, it’s a beautiful car and does everything I need it to do.

We have a Jeep Compass and a Vauxhall Crossland.

Vauxhall is mainly mine as automatic which I is why I chose it! It’s very nippy and so easy to drive. Use it for school run and local travel. Decent seating space, (6ft 4inch DS fits in back no problem) and boot. Reliable as well. Heated front seats, camera, sensors etc. Petrol use is good for short runs.

DH uses Jeep for work commute on motorway as it needs decent length runs at speed (diesel). Best car we ever owned. So comfy for driving, feels like a tank but moves off so easily and easy to manoeuvre, great height, luxury interior. Very smooth drive, can’t feel 100mph+, great sat nav, cameras and sensors. Drove across Europe in it no problem. Reliable, never had an issue. Love the way it looks as well. No idea why Jeep seems to have a bad name and why people pay £000s more for Range Rovers which seem really unreliable from what I’ve read.

I’d be very cautious of range rovers, and if you find one you’re interested in then have a quick search for the insurance rates, they’ve become astronomical to insure due to how easily stolen they are, on top of reliability issues.

mrsfeatherbottom · 27/11/2023 16:42

Another Karoq fan here - we're on our second one

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 27/11/2023 16:44

On my second bmw X3, having had an X5 in the past. I love the current one, it’s big enough for 2 labs plus a bunch of luggage , mileage is good, it’s very quick and they have all been very reliable.
Had a LandRover several years ago, but it was never out of the shop and strangely could not tolerate freezing weather. Given I live in Scotland, that was a deal breaker.

Ruthietuthie · 27/11/2023 16:49

I have two, the Audi Q3 and an Audi Q8 E-tron. Love them both. The E-tron is remarkable if you want an electric car.

Range Rovers are hard to insure in London. Many insurance companies refuse to insure them because too many are stolen. According to which.co.uk they are the most unreliable brand soldin the UK.

I have a seat ateca and they are similar to a Tiguan. I found the 2020 model was bigger than the newer model. Great car, especially for a dog

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 27/11/2023 17:05

Honda CRV I'm on my second one as my first was unfortunately killed in a collision however I'd owned it for 8 years and put 100k on it's clock without issue and it never let me down.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/11/2023 17:08

I’m not in London and I haven’t got a Range Rover. I’ve heard Landrover’s in general are harder to insure but then everyone’s insurance has gone up this year.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/11/2023 17:09

Sorry that was to @GasDrivenNun Why does the reply button not actually reply?

DejaVoodoo · 27/11/2023 17:13

Hi thanks everyone, I appreciate all the contributions. I think I've now reluctantly struck the Disco off my list despite wanting one for decades!😥

Budget. Well, hoping to spend £KMid20s, but would go up to 30 if something amazing showed up. We've seen a lot of cars being reduced recently.

Boot. Well, I know most cars bar the smallest would accommodate a big dog, but it's when we go on holiday with him and 4 suitcases that my current massive boot is a godsend! Also, a PP mentioned a low sill and I realise that that's what we'll need, too.

Want high driving position. I drove for 4.5 hours non-stop in our hired Tiguan. Was very comfortable the whole time. Wouldn't have been in my Zafira.

I have a bmw X5 and Dh had a Range Rover sport.
Mine is very nippy his feels like a bus. I really like mine as it doesn't feel like you are driving an SUV. It's the M sport version so sportier than the standard one I think.
Drinks petrol though.
I had the mercedes SUV that was quite nice but preferred the X5 think I'm on my fourth one now.
Dh won't be buying another Range Rover.

DogFish632 · 27/11/2023 17:16

Toyota RAV4. Love it! Also a "self-charging" hybrid so very fuel efficient.

DejaVoodoo · 27/11/2023 17:17

I do live in the country, but no great need for 4x4 really... I tend to stay on the road!

Interesting to see someone mention Jaguar E- Pace above. DH fancies one, he likes Jags. It's a possibility. I parked next to an F- Pace earlier today. It was massive!

OP posts:
CuriousMoe · 27/11/2023 17:20

We have a Jaguar F-Pace and LOVE it! We initially got it when it was just DH and I because he’d had some back problems from his previous car. We now have a dog and baby and always have plenty of space 😁. We ruled out Land Rovers because of extortionate insurance as we live in London. The jag isn’t so bad.

tootrueblue · 27/11/2023 17:24

If you can hold off until the new year, I would. Second hand prices are falling through the floor

MindHowYouGoes · 27/11/2023 17:53

The evoque has a frustratingly small boot for the size of the car
