Do you have an SUV? Which one, and go you recommend it?

Were about to replace our ancient Vauxhall Zafira. Will get an SUV style car, 1-3 years old, but not sure which...
I hired a VW Tiguan for the day recently and loved it, so comfy, but we probably need a bigger boot.

What do you have? Do you recommend it? Particularly keen to hear about Land/Range Rover. Or anything really.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I have a VW Toureg. It's bigger than the Tiguan so may suit you?

invisibleoldwoman · 27/11/2023 15:29

Nissan X Trail. Could not recommend it more highly. I think it qualifies as a SUV.

HelloandGoodMorningPlease · 27/11/2023 15:31

2 X Skoda Yeti - best car I have ever had
1 X Vauxhall Mokka - hated it
At present have VW Tiguan- really nice car with good size boot, love all the safety features on it.

DH has a BMW X1 and we love it. It's a dream to drive. Plenty of boot space plus an extra hidden bit underneath.

Can comfortably fit the four of us in plus luggage for a self catering holiday. Kids older teens and have plenty space in the back seat, with arm rest, cup holders etc.

Someone else recommended the X1 to me the other day. A 2 year old one is surprisingly affordable for a Beamer! One to consider.

I've had a Tucson, an Outlander and an XC90 and the Volvo wins hands down. It's an absolute workhorse, we get it serviced every year and it just doesn't let me down. We've done over 100k miles in it, it's comfortable and roomy and great on motorways and if you don't get a new shiny one it's good for throwing in and out verges too 😁

We're paying the ULEZ fee (we're right on the edge of the zone for it) rather than replacing the car 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ah, or maybe not after reading @PilatesPeach 's comment!

My friend's husband works as a mobile technician for Range Rovers and Land Rovers - he is never at home as always being called out. I would never have one personally I hear so many issues with them.

WhatACluster · 27/11/2023 15:35

I have a Honda CRV and absolutely love it, owned it from new it’s 7 years old now and it’s been faultless, it’s been maintained well. Its boot could be a bit bigger (I lug 4 paddle boards around and I appreciate not everyone does) it’s never once let me down. Also get amazing mpg currently sat at 57.9.

I also have a Porsche Cayenne absolutely stunning car, but it’s very expensive to run and maintain, again never let me down, however basic maintenance is £££ and that’s with me & DH doing a lot of the work, it’s boots is on par with the CRV however I don’t take it anywhere apart from the school run

Just don't buy a Disco. We've had so many issues and spent SO much money.

DaisyDando · 27/11/2023 15:36

I’ve got a lovely iD4 if you fancy electric.

I have one that I sort of inherited and kind of like it to drive ( nice and high and the boot space is amazing especially with rear seats down) but it’s too big for a 5 seater. I have no idea why they made that design decision. It’s kind of annoying in tight car parks as it’s so wide. Also no rear camera. What’s that about? The Karoq is basically the same car for less money and it’s got 7 seats so I’d choose that if I was buying again.

I also have a Kia Sportage and I love that car. My friend works for McLaren and maintains the Sportage is the best family car on the market in terms of what you get for the money. Nice light drive. Fair bit of oomph.

I’m on my second CRV. First one did me 15 years so I just traded it in for the same again since it was perfect. New one exactly as perfect so this is me for the next 15 years.

Thanks all. Going out for a couple of hours now, but reading everything with interest and will catch up again later.
I appreciate all your comments and suggestions.

Skoda Karoq. Faultless.

Absolutely! Best car I ever had.

Mummyoflabradors · 27/11/2023 15:41

Honda crv automatic, love it!

Tallisker · 27/11/2023 15:43

I'd recommend a Range Rover Evoque if you want a smallish one, and a Range Rover Sport if you want a big one. The Sport goes anywhere, tows a lot, is comfortable and fast and can do 45mpg if you're not too heavy booted.

The Evoque is stylish and easier to park being smaller. Boot size is reasonable and seats fold down for more space.

But then I'm a Land Rover fan and love the cars. We've had six between us, one of mine was a rogue one which I rejected eventually, but the service we've had from our dealer has been faultless.

I don't recognise these issues at all - @PilatesPeach are you thinking of a 1-series?

I'll take another look then... I think I found the boot modest on the Tiguan because it had the cover thing on... I always take those off because I have a big dog!

I used to have a Labrador and he could comfortably sit in the boot of my Golf & the Tiguan has a much bigger boot than that so it might be ok (depending on the size of your dog)

Cumbrianlife · 27/11/2023 15:49

Volvo XC40 r-design Pro 2litre AWD automatic with a bit of added kit such as heated seats, steering wheel, etc. . Bought brand new so not cheap but I love it. DS has a range rover sport and says mine is far more comfortable and better to drive. Apparently, there's never been a fatality in one. Fuel consumption isn't great but I'd buy again.

Have a Tiguan and really like it - the boot is massive so can’t really imagine it not being big enough! However, there is a bigger model you could consider, the Touran.

Sorry I meant the Touareg not Touran

Luckynumbereight · 27/11/2023 15:53

I would never buy a Range Rover or anything from Land Rover ever again. Got stung twice by two different hugely unreliable models so more the fool is me. They constantly break down and the wait for parts is long.

Drive an X3 now and love it. You can pick up a decent four year old one for a good price. Go for the 2L diesel which is staggeringly economical.

MrsAvocet · 27/11/2023 15:55

I've got a Skoda Kodiaq and have been very happy with it.
It's got the option of 7 seats which can be useful when transporting DC's friends, but mainly I don't use the back row of seats and that leaves plenty of boot space. From the carrying stuff perspective, things I like about it include that the back seats fold down completely flat which a lot don't, the aperture of the hatch is big and the sill is quite low so it quite easy to lift large things (bikes in my case) in and out. I looked at a lot of similar vehicles and found that there were quite a few where although the interior space was good, it wasn't as easy to lift things in and out. I was torn between the Kodiaq and a Subaru Forester but I got a better financial deal on the Skoda so went for that.
Do you actually need 4WD? We live in a rural area and I did want something that was comfortably capable of driving across fields though not hard core off roading which ruled out quite a lot of cars. If you don't really need 4WD that will give you more options and save you money.

WickWood · 27/11/2023 16:13

I've got an E Pace Jaguar, an SUV but smaller than the massive F Pace. Had it about 6 months now and no issues so far. It's automatic, has eco, comfort, sport and ice/snow mode, goes in and out of 4 wheel drive as to not waste fuel, has a big boot and I think it looks smart.

Cumbrianlife · 27/11/2023 16:17

Before the Volvo I had a new Kuga St line. I never liked it and wished I'd taken an extended test drive. It wasn't comfortable on longer journeys and needed regular garage visits, definitely wouldn't have another.

Mazda CX3 with the bigger engine ?2l. Ive driven every conceivable car and it’s bloody brilliant it’s got excellent road holding friends with other makes of SUVs often comment on it when they are passengers. It is essential for where I live, it’s exceedingly reliable it’s never broken down currently down 90k + miles and it’s 7 years old, and I’m getting just over 41 miles to the gallon which I thought was not great but in fact I was told recently by a car mechanic that it’s very good for the size of the engine/weight of car.
Most car mechanics I talk to really rate Mazdas saying they are very reliable.

The boot is tiny!! I was lusting after one to replace my Mazda 3 until I saw how small the boot was.
if you want a big boot you’re possibly better with an estate car.
