Walking this evening we noticed this wide circle around the moon so I whipped my phone out and managed to reproduce it, thankfully. I was quite excited, wondering what the heck it was until DP suggested it was connected to the frost, or something...
I am in Lancashire at the moment.
Can anyone else see this in the sky right now?

I've seen halos round the moon loads of times, but this huge clear circle round the moon??? Never seen it before! It's amazing!

SwirlyShirly · 25/11/2023 22:03

Apparently moon halos are most often 22 degrees, because the light is refracting through ice crystals in very high cirrus clouds. Those ice crystals are almost always hexagonal, hence the 22 degrees. Sometimes they can be more than 22 degrees, but quite rare.

Just stepped out of my door and can just about make it out here in South Manchester

Lately I've been fascinated by the moon (current bedtime reading is 'Moonology') - so glad I spotted this thread! Had to nip out from bed to take a photo - in West Midlands

Can someone tell me what the bluish blob below the moon is please? Didn't seem to appear where we are but it's on quite a few photos.

The bright thing near to the moon that looks like a star is Jupiter

Sorry I've just looked back at some of the pictures and I see what you mean - the bluish thing is reflection on the camera lens

Ohhmydays · 25/11/2023 22:42

I always thought Jupiter in December was the Christmas star as a child 🥰

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 25/11/2023 23:46

Lovely photos on this thread! I just stepped out onto the balcony (-2, brr) to see if I could spot it, but I think it's gone behind the house (we face SE-ish and have a bloody great mountain behind us!). I'll look tomorrow. Or am I too far south? In Eastern France, near the Swiss border. Definitely cold here!

Oddsocks55 · 25/11/2023 23:56

Manchester here, we were out earlier and took a photo because it was interesting :)
