Hot Ribena

CharliesAngles · 25/11/2023 07:59

Feeling rotten with a full on snotty cold so have decided to stay in bed, with a mug of hot ribena and MN to keep me company.

What is your comfort food or drink when you’re not feeling well?

We always have hot Ribena or Vimto here, and for some reason I like jam and butter on crackers when I’m ill.

PaulaTrilloe · 25/11/2023 08:01

I love hot Ribena. Also home made soup

Namchange101 · 25/11/2023 08:02

I bought a bottle of Ribena this week for this very reason! Also have the full on snotty cold and feeling very sorry for myself. Woke up at 6.30 when I could do with 3 more hours of sleep.
So mine is hot Ribena as well. I made a hot toddy with rum yesterday and whilst it was nice, hot Ribena still trumps it.

Peepshowcreepshow · 25/11/2023 08:02

Hot Ribena was always my go to, but then they changed the recipe and it is horrible. Nothing has quite hit the same spot. I do like a pickled onion monster munch if I have a sore throat.

NectarinesAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 25/11/2023 08:04

Smash with butter and cheese. (It has to be smash - proper mashed potato will not fit the bill.)

Tinned potatoes with salt.

dontgobaconmyheart · 25/11/2023 08:11

I do like ribena, but having it hot makes me gag, I find it so unpleasant - both the smell and the experience of drinking it warm.

I have no idea why but what I always seem to crave when I'm unwell are ham and cheese sandwiches on wholemeal bread and raspberries in jelly. Two things I don't eat otherwise at all but want the minute a cold turns up.

Deathraystare · 25/11/2023 08:12

@NectarinesAreNotTheOnlyFruit

Funnily enough this is what I do and it must be instant mash - prefer the Idaho one to Smash but whatever I can get. With butter and salad cream!

smilesup · 25/11/2023 08:12

They have wrecked ribena and this used to be my go to. It's vile.

Pashazade · 25/11/2023 08:15

I bought a bottle last week in the faint hope that they've tweaked the recipe back a bit as the sweetener is way down the ingredients list but I'm afraid I may have been over optimistic. No one else uses the same proportion of blackberries so none of the other ones are as good even if they do use just sugar.

WinteryWonderland · 25/11/2023 08:17

Hot ribena with a teaspoon of honey and some lemon juice

Yep agree it's not as nice but no cordial or fizzy drinks taste the same since they reduced the sugar and pumped them full of artificial sweeteners.

Bonbon21 · 25/11/2023 08:19

Oh no!!
They have changed the Ribena recipe??
I didnt know... and I opened this post cos I have a stinking cold and as soon as I saw RIBENA.. I thought I have to get that! That will fix me!!
Havent had it for years... now I wont bother...
Devastated!
😣😥😣😥😥😥

I love hot Ribena. Also home made soup.

I make soup regularly, it's great! I also have a horrible cold, following on from one that went away on Wednesday. I had to get up to deal with my runny nose, instead of staying in bed a bit longer.

Curse you, World!

justalittlesnoel · 25/11/2023 08:23

Hot Ribena is a definite favourite here too!

I also love hot honey and lemon. Being a bit pretentious I use local honey (village bees!) and lemon, which makes it taste even better imo. I actually quite like blackcurrant hot lemsip too 😂

Squirrelsnut · 25/11/2023 08:23

You can buy normal Ribena or the repulsive low sugar stuff. The normal one is as good as ever.

If you drank Ribena pre 2000 ISH, it's absolutely not the same.

CharliesAngles · 25/11/2023 08:27

Oh I know it’s a damn shame they changed the recipe, but it is still the only thing that hits the spot with it’s blackcurranty-ness.

We are having bacon and lentil soup later, so that’s sorted!

Now I want pickled onion monster munch.

Hope my fellow snotty cold sufferers get their comfort food, and feel better soon!

Oh that is good to know! I have only seen the horrible one in our local shop.

Piscesmumma1978 · 25/11/2023 08:35

It's forgotten about hot ribena 😍

Buttery white toast is my go to x

Pashazade · 25/11/2023 08:41

The normal one used to be straight up sugar, it does now have sweetener in it as well.....depends how much you can taste the sweetener. Bloody sugar tax.....mutter mutter.....

That's not correct- all ribena has sweeteners in now unless you pay a lot of money to buy it from abroad

Kinsters · 25/11/2023 08:50

I wondered why I'd gone off ribena! I didn't buy low sugar and am overseas but I'll check the ingredients.

mommatoone · 25/11/2023 09:13

Heinz tomato soup in a mug . Warms the cockles 😋

DilemmaDelilah · 25/11/2023 09:17

I used to love hot ribena to drink, and tuna pasta to eat, when I was very very tired or not feeling well. Then I started chemotherapy..... my tastes have changed. For quite some weeks the only thing I could eat was chicken noodle soup without the noodles.
Now my hot drink of choice is chocolate horlicks made with milk, and probably cottage pie to eat, or spaghetti Bolognese with lots of spaghetti and not much sauce.

lightelmqueen · 25/11/2023 09:23

I love hot ribena but couldn't get hold of any this week and ended up buying Asda blackcurrant high juice which is made with sugar and tastes lovely.

We all have a homemade elderberry syrup in hot water with a tea spoon of money when ill
