Police visiting my old address asking for me - why?

DorsetandBeyond · 21/11/2023 14:26

My ex-neighbour has contacted me to let me know that the police have visited their house (and presumably my old address too) trying to locate me.

I haven't lived at the address for a decade. Ex-neighbour was asked by police if she could contact me (we are friends on social media, although only in very occasional contact) and request that I ring 101. I've rung 101, they asked for my details and current address, and confirmed that there was something on the system but couldn't say what it was. Just said that the relevant dept would be in touch with me as soon as possible.

I can't think what on earth it could be related to, especially where it would be linked to such an old address and not my current address. I've never been witness to a crime, to my knowledge.

So, what are the possible reasons for a police visit to your house? And I'm thinking particularly of a visit to a very old address like this, which suggests that it can't be something current.

Any ideas, knowledge from police officers or those in the know, or accounts of similar experiences would be very welcome. I'm worrying about one or two family members that I've lost touch with in the last few years, which is making me feel really anxious that it might be related to them, but I'm sure there must be other reasons.

@DeeKitch Why would the police be involved with that ?

.

AutumnBride · 22/11/2023 16:01

DeeKitch · 22/11/2023 15:02

That's what happened

No it's not, the police were involved because of a sudden death. The Police doesn't get involved in tracking down people for inheritances.

You know what I mean, notifying her

Thanks for the update. Sad, but at least it wasn’t e.g. financial fraud.
It’s good to know that the police went to a certain amount of trouble to try to trace relatives.

Londonlou2 · 22/11/2023 18:37

I did have a visit from police in connection with fraud. Someone had opened online shopping (JD Williams etc) accounts in my name using my old address from 10 years ago. These online shopping providers don’t do proper Experian checks and it was part of a larger fraud investigation.

I had police visit me randomly once concerning a guy who had been accused of rape and they searched his Facebook and see I used to speak to him literally 6 years before. I thought he was a nice guy. The male police officer was actually really rude and made me feel thick for saying when I knew the guy he was very nice. I followed the case and it was dropped in the end. The statement I felt forced to sign said I thought he was strange though, as that's what the police convinced me to agree to.

MondayBags678 · 22/11/2023 19:38

I know this happened to someone because someone else had committed identity fraud and they were following it up took a while to clear up and was stressful but it eventually got sorted out! I hope it’s nothing serious

Have you considered reading the part in OPs post where they said they rang 101 and are waiting to hear back from the police?

Seriously!!!

Isinglass20 · 22/11/2023 19:56

Police would’ve found your name and address from 192.com and other recent information from Linked-in

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 22/11/2023 20:04

We had the Pilice knocking on the door once asking for an old neighbour. Turned out he'd had a motorbike stolen years ago and it had been recovered.

Wow, where in the country was that? I saw someone saying their husband's £19k motorbike was stolen and their local police didn't consider that anything to put any effort into.
To add insult to injury, a friend was told the whereabouts of his stolen motorbike, but three hours after the police had supplied the details to the recovery contractor. He lost a day's pay looking for the bike where it no longer was and having to travel 40 miles across London and pay hundreds of pounds to get it released from secure storage.

bossybloss · 22/11/2023 20:12

About 20 yes ago a friend had a call from the police regarding someone they had met on holiday. Turns out the guy had murdered his partner and police were going through contacts in an address book to speak to everyone he knew

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 22/11/2023 20:18

@infor it wax the UK but was around 20 years ago when the Police had better funding.

Aibu..

My DD has been coming out of school for the last two weeks with a series of "someone pushed/was mean" to me. My child is very soft natured, would never push because in her own words she's too worried she'll get told off by the head. She won't say go away, shut up..

so my question is we are now
on incident 5. Aibu to think of pulling her out of this large class and moving her to private education? Are smaller classes easier for quieter more
timid kids?

This is one of the weirdest threads I’ve ever been on

You need to start a new thread of your own.

I had this! Someone had committed fraud in my name. The police came to my house eventually however I was alone with my children. We arranged for me to head to police station after school run. I was arrested but home with no charge after an interview. They couldn’t tell me the full details of the fraud until the interview room and honestly it blew my mind. I have thankfully been with the same bank for years& same phone number/ email for many years to.

Edited

That's outrageous.

It could also put you at direct risk as had it gone to court, he would have been entitled to see all statements made against him.

Also he might have been totally innocent.

I concur! It’s insane!

So sorry for your loss OP

CaptainJ · 22/11/2023 21:41

How would you feel about going into the local police station and asking what it's concerning? You still maintain your rights and if it's anything serious you may as well deal with it now than let it hang over you?

I've been served (speeding ticket and not correct address on DVLA so had to go to court). I've also had the police track me because of a cold case murder inquiry because my DNA (which was wrongfully taken and stored on a database) was found at a homicide in the 70's (before I was born) - long story. As a young person, I didn't have the best experience with the police but a few bad pilots shouldn't ground all the planes...

It might be something you can help with.

Hope it all works out.

Merida46 · 22/11/2023 22:59

Did you misgender some snowflake on Facebook?

Ariana12 · 22/11/2023 22:59

There are a lot of good thoughts here. But as you're still concerned and the "relevant department" hasn't contacted you, you could try 101 again. You could say that, not surprisingly you're a bit worried and till haven't heard and could they please tell you what it's about.

AdobeWanKenobi · 22/11/2023 23:12

Good Lord people. Read the thread.
if you really can’t be arsed to read it all at least use the ‘see all’ feature on the OP.

Your insensitivity and sheer laziness to read could actually cause someone distress. If you don’t have time to read it all don’t bloody comment.

AirFryerFrequentFlyer · 22/11/2023 23:28

Sorry for your loss OP. I hope your other relative in the CC situation gets the help and support they need too.
