Police visiting my old address asking for me - why?

DorsetandBeyond · 21/11/2023 14:26

My ex-neighbour has contacted me to let me know that the police have visited their house (and presumably my old address too) trying to locate me.

I haven't lived at the address for a decade. Ex-neighbour was asked by police if she could contact me (we are friends on social media, although only in very occasional contact) and request that I ring 101. I've rung 101, they asked for my details and current address, and confirmed that there was something on the system but couldn't say what it was. Just said that the relevant dept would be in touch with me as soon as possible.

I can't think what on earth it could be related to, especially where it would be linked to such an old address and not my current address. I've never been witness to a crime, to my knowledge.

So, what are the possible reasons for a police visit to your house? And I'm thinking particularly of a visit to a very old address like this, which suggests that it can't be something current.

Any ideas, knowledge from police officers or those in the know, or accounts of similar experiences would be very welcome. I'm worrying about one or two family members that I've lost touch with in the last few years, which is making me feel really anxious that it might be related to them, but I'm sure there must be other reasons.

my ex once called to say the police had been to the door looking for me (I’d moved about 8 years before) and my ex sent them straight to my house Then called me in panic 😂
turns out it was to do with a car that wasn’t actually mine anymore but still registered to the old adress.

I had been involved in no fault accident a while back and the car was a right off. Sorted all threw insurance etc and they arranged for it to be picked up so never thought about it again after.
well turns out somebody random was using it to commit crimes! But not me so all good haha.
they did say I had to un register myself because I’d totally forgotten to do that at the time lol

Mammmayy · 21/11/2023 17:31

This happened to me. Turns out they were perusing an ex for a charge on a crime and wondered if I knew anything and could help to give evidence. I have no idea how they found that old address or me as I’d never lived with him.

Highly doubtful given they let the person contact the op and ask her to phone 101. Anything significant they’d have found the op and contacted her themselves.

A) if the relevant force doesn't hold any information on the OP other than her home address how do you think they would do this ?

B) most people have their social media accounts so that randomers cannot message them. A message from a friend is much more likely to be read and result in contact than a message sent by a police officer that is likely to go into a junk box

C) if you got a message from a random person on Facebook saying hi "I'm Sgt Angel from Sandford Police trying to get hold of you. What's your address and phone number" would you actually contact them ? Therefore it's a good option to get the neighbour to send the message to call in quoting the incident number although I'm surprised they didn't take the details themselves to follow up.

@DorsetandBeyond The police will do credit searches and DVLA searches if they have enough motivation. Usually for something you’ve said on the internet. Source, they’ve been harassing me on the basis of false allegations for 18 months. They have a marker on my car and have checked my credit history. Cunts.

Didn’t tip out for a burglary over the road though.

forjustnow · 21/11/2023 17:38

Check your DVLA details. I was contacted by the police once (very similar way) I was convinced I was going to be called as a very important witness (to an imaginary crime) when in reality I had just driven off without paying for petrol.

I’ve read too many crime novels.

Cowhen · 21/11/2023 17:38

I hope it's something boring, OP. How strange that it's from so long ago though.

therealcookiemonster · 21/11/2023 17:40

oh OP... this is so transparent. clearly you have undertaken some sort of international crime... I am thinking stolen monets, maybe a few matisse... buried them under some concrete in the old property.... now you have created this mumsnet thread to reinforce your legal defence if and when the paintings are found...

won't work I'm afraid. I suggest you sell them on ASAP and go somewhere without an extradition treaty with the uk.

I don't have a lot of money but happy to share some cookies for one of the monets..

The police have just been to my (current) house.

It was one of the relatives I'd been feeling concerned about the loss of contact with (although not the one where I've been worried about coercive control).

Sadly they have been found deceased.

It wasn't someone who was very present in my life - I may only have seen them a dozen or so times in my lifetime and they lived a long distance away. However, my sibling and I had been talking only a week ago about not having had replies from them for a long time, feeling concerned, aware that they probably don't have anyone else now and that we must try and get in touch. I was planning on writing or ringing over Christmas. Sad that I left it too late.

I wonder why Police systems are so out of date that they don't have your new address after a decade? No help to you but I'm just curious.

We don't get sent updates of peoples addresses !

jane Brown moves from 12 Wisteria Walk, Margate
she moves to 15 Rowan Walk, Peterborough

if she has never come into contact with Kent Police she wouldn't be on their intel system. If she doesn't come into contact with Cambridgeshire Police she won't be on there either. So how would you think we could identify that the Jane Brown registered in Peterborough is the same one recently registered in Kent ?

if her name was on the voters register as Jane Millicent Barbara Fortescue-cholmondely-Brown-Noakes we might get somewhere

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 21/11/2023 17:45

I'm very sorry for your loss @DorsetandBeyond, I thought that might be what it was 💐

therealcookiemonster · 21/11/2023 17:46

@DorsetandBeyond oh no, I am so sorry. my condolences. never easy to lose a relative, even if you are not so much in touch.

please ignore my earlier "trying to be funny" post... I wish I could delete it now after your update.

hope you are OK. xxx

DorsetandBeyond · 21/11/2023 17:47

@StiffyByngsDogBartholomew, I was starting to think it was most likely to be concerning that particular person. Relieved to know what it is. Sad to know as well.

Also You:* *OP will update if she wants, probably doesn't need your help.

Make your mind up. 😂

Read a book maybe if you crave intrigue.

Yes you're right, I'm bored.

Sadly the OP has now been advised her relative has been found dead. Very sad.

SM4713 · 21/11/2023 17:59

So sorry to read the update OP Flowers

StopLickingTheDog · 21/11/2023 18:01

Sorry to read your sad update @DorsetandBeyond Are you required to take on the practical duties following your relatives death?

GoodnightJude1 · 21/11/2023 18:04

Sorry to hear this OP.

SkaneTos · 21/11/2023 18:06

I'm sorry that you received such sad news, OP.
But good that you now have got an answer about what the police wanted.

dressedforcomfort · 21/11/2023 18:10

The only time I was visited by police was because I was named next of kin to a relative who'd sadly passed away. Hopefully not that

Same here.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/11/2023 18:11

Aw op so sorry x

@DorsetandBeyond
I want to apologise for my post telling you you had to let us know the outcome.
A PP has well and truly lambasted me for it - I was trying to be lighthearted, but can appreciate it could come across as insensitive.
Try not to feel bad about not having contacted your relative - you weren't to know what was going to happen.
I would be great if we could have hindsight in advance Flowers

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/11/2023 18:13

@StiffyByngsDogBartholomew thanks, genuinely interested. Kind of assumed there was one central database rather than discreet forces databases which don't talk to one another. Given there is so much data out there about us it's fascinating to me that the Police don't know where I live unless I've had contact with them.

AdobeWanKenobi · 21/11/2023 18:17

Sorry for your loss OP.
