DH was trying to teach his Scouts map reading the other day. He was frustrated when they weren't very interested and one piped up 'i've got my mobile phone, why do I need to know this'.

As a rule, protocol for planning trips is NOT to rely on GPS or on mobiles for exactly this reason. DH gets frustrated by people who don't understand why you need a back up plan and why you need to understand the landscape (and how to find your way to safety without devices).

Because if you DO get into trouble, what do you do then?

Its fine if you are going to a busy place and sticking to a very clear path, but stray anywhere away from that, and it can start to be dangerous.

Even experienced people can forget this too.

Makes me glad to have done geography, orienteering and duke of Edinburgh in the days before mobiles!

They were sighted in Snowdonia and their mobiles picked masts in snowdowia.

They were in Snowdonia.

Right.

Makes me wonder who the car belongs to, and why they didn't all tell their parents they were going off camping.

Once Mum said she thought her son was staying at a friend's Grandad's house.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/11/2023 12:25

sounds even more worrying

Just as we heard the car has been found, a police cordon was set up near the village of Garreg. It's on the A4085, about three miles from Penrhyndeudraeth, near Porthmadog. The air ambulance is believed to have landed a few miles from the cordon. The road has been closed between Garreg and Port Aberglaslyn.

Taken from the BBC live feed- god I hopethe air ambulance presence is a good sign.

Generally it is

They have two uses

  • to pick up the injured for swift transfer to hospital
  • to bring specialists in to treat at the scene
Fulshaw · 21/11/2023 12:27

Air ambulance surely means they’ve found them, in any event.

Cumberbiatch · 21/11/2023 12:28

Bloody hell. I know that exact area so so well. I really hope they're okay.

Thats roughly the location DH had them in. He says it the road up to the place he thinks it could be. (He's not feeling any better at this point).

Air ambulance suggests they've found them at least.

MoreRainbowsPlease · 21/11/2023 12:29

I have 2 teenage boy so this story is really pulling at my heart. My worry if they aren't with the car is that they may have suffered carbon monoxide poisoning in a tent some where if they were cold and bought a source of heat like a bbq into the tent. I live near a popular camping area and several times people have been found deceased in their tents after bringing a bbq in for warmth. From the comments on local social media there are a lot of adults who weren't aware that that would be an issue so I'm sure many teenagers would have no clue how dangerous that could be.

Ostryga · 21/11/2023 12:29

Air ambulance suggests they may have been found alive, god willing. My heart goes out to their families, they must be distraught.

It's a long hike from Nantmor to those caves...

DH says that does happen, but the weather was really good this weekend (he was actually not too far away) so he thinks it unlikely for that reason.

An air ambulance just took off from near Nantmor, seems like the right area?

If you look at that link it looks that the air ambulance heading to Bangor hospital?

marvelousmarmite · 21/11/2023 12:31

Yes air ambulance certainly doesn't suggest that the only news is an empty parked car. That would be very quick to ascertain - probably from whoever phoned it in.

Lovemychair · 21/11/2023 12:32

Once Mum said she thought her son was staying at a friend's Grandad's house

A very good reason to always check with the adult who they are meant to be staying with. So many posts on MN about not letting their children go for sleepovers without getting contact details for very good reason.

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 12:11

Not if you are going wild camping in snowdonia. Its not about bloody privacy, its about respecting and understanding the environment you are in.

I agree. Amongst many little lies - like how much REALLY my new coat was or how much and what I'd eaten on any given day - I never felt like lying about my whereabouts.
Until... Until I was hitchhiking to music festivals at 15. Then I was "staying at my friend's", whilst my friend was apparently at mine... That's why I'm inclined to believe that location lies are not a coincidence in this case of the missing boys.

It chills me to think if anything were to happen to me and my friend - our families wouldn't have known where to even start looking... 😕

Mejustme3 · 21/11/2023 12:32

HLE61 has landed at an air field .

It's landed at Caernarfon airport now, not a hospital.

I think that the air ambulance has gone back to its base at Dinas Dinlle

It's alarming how people do rely on mobile phones these days.
Map reading with a compass is an essential skill to learn for all who walk off the beaten track, as is taking basic survival rations with one.

If people can't be bothered to learn how to read a map , they aren't really suitable to go walking off track.

Survival skills and correct clothing and footwear are basic essentials before setting off , especially in mid November.

The more young people are taught about survival, the better...but will they be listening?

A mobile with no battery or no signal is useless.

Yep i just noticed that - maybe this isnt the same one.

Keeping everything crossed for these boys - reminding myself to have another word with DS age 14 about being open with me

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 21/11/2023 12:35

The car belongs to one of the boys by the sound of BBC statement from
police.

It's a long hike from Nantmor to those caves...

Nantmor is still a long hike as you say so that potentially a relief.

Nantmor has flat fields suitable for landing a helicopter though.
DH thinks that the nearest suitable landing place would be there anyway. Its not the best area to park a helicopter. (You'd only do an air rescue in certain situations as they are more dangerous).

Depends on whats happened tbh.

Alternative theory are they are up Cnicht somewhere.
Or its a more straighforward 'crash' scenario.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/11/2023 12:38

latest update doesnt sound hopeful

Doteycat · 21/11/2023 12:38

Oh the lies. The lies. So so dangerous.
When the police knock to say they have found your daughter but u say no It can't be her cos she went somewhere else. The poor parents.
Except she hadn't. The lies.
This is so distressing and bring back memories 40 years old.
They changed my life and my dds were reared with those memories in mind. No lies.
I hope these lads get a second chance.
