I initially read it that they had got into a strangers car maybe for a lift.

I know. The wording is ambiguous. Is this intentional - the Fail trying to imply they may have hitched a lift with someone to make the story sound more creepy? If they had hired the car or one of them owned it, why not say so clearly?

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 12:11

Not if you are going wild camping in snowdonia. Its not about bloody privacy, its about respecting and understanding the environment you are in.

You've just proved my point. As an adult with more highly developed risk analysis you can see how stupid this plan was, but if they wanted to do that (perhaps to get pissed and mess about?) they'd have known their DPs wouldn't approve.

YourWinter · 21/11/2023 12:13

Wouldn’t at least one of them have had a phone charger (for the car) or a power bank? You don’t need to be that much of a prepper, and teenagers are usually inseparable from their phones.

grass67 · 21/11/2023 12:14

@RedToothBrush Whilst I agree with you, teenage boys are not know to be sensible.

Honestly the things I've seen over the years on mountains.. mindboggling! Hiking in jeans and trainers in deep snow. (teenage boy)

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 12:14

If they know where the car is the police will know the potential hazards in the immediate area if the boys are with it.

It sounds like the car was found after a tip off from a member of the public.

BodenCardiganNot · 21/11/2023 12:14

The police have found the car.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 21/11/2023 12:15

The BBC says the car has been found and emergency services are at the scene. I hope those boys are safe, their poor families.

GoingDownLikeBHS · 21/11/2023 12:16

Yes but are they in it? Feels sick looking at those boys' photos, imaging what their parents are going through.

MrsCarson · 21/11/2023 12:16

So glad they found the car, now they can hopefully find the kids

I initially read it that they had got into a strangers car maybe for a lift.

They live in Shrewsbury and were going to Snowdonia.....that'd be a long way for a lift with camping gear, especially from a stranger.

The police have the car registration number so know who it belongs to, but that hasn't been mentioned in any article.

Garlicnaan · 21/11/2023 12:16

They're still looking for the boys

I wonder if the car ran out of petrol? Or broke down? Have they said where the car was?

SheIsStuck23 · 21/11/2023 12:17

Stories like this make me feel sick. Those poor parents. I truly hope for a good outcome but sadly that rarely happens. Such a sad story.

Fulshaw · 21/11/2023 12:17

Forget the phones. I’m not a hiker or a camper but even I know that phones are unreliable, in terms of signal and battery life, and are not necessarily going to be any use in an emergency. Either to help you or the people looking for you.

Edited

They were sighted in Snowdonia and their mobiles picked masts in snowdowia.

They were in Snowdonia.

oakleaffy · 21/11/2023 12:18

When one is young, like these lads, it's so easy to be impulsive and not to plan, but U.K has some dangerous terrain, and the weather can close in fast and dramatically.

Mountain Rescue teams do superb work, Let's hope the boys are found safely.
Their poor families must be at their wit's end.
Especially the mother who had no idea her son was going ''Camping''.

As others have stated, this shows the impulsive actions of the boys.

Yes, car breaking down or running out of fuel is possible.

If in area with no signal, they might have attempted to reach higher ground and got lost. But we don't as yet know where the car was found, and what the possible/likely onwards lines of enquiry will be.

Garlicnaan · 21/11/2023 12:21

Ok I read a news tweet saying that they were still "continuing to search" for the boys but looking at other sources no one else is saying that.

So I wonder if they were with the car after all.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 21/11/2023 12:22

BBC reporting a cordon set up and air ambulance involved now.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 21/11/2023 12:22

The report says a road has been closed in Llanfrothen. I don’t know the area at all though.

It has - BBC and no doubt others, and it was posted earlier on this thread. But all overtaken by events as the car has been found

DH has looked at this and gone a bit mad. (He's outdoorsy and hates reports like this. It always sets him off about what happened - which to an extent is good because he has to do risk assessments for trips etc).

One of the things thats particularly worrying about this case is one of the parents has said that she didn't know her son had gone camping and thought he was staying with the grandfather of a friend. That suggests they were perhaps doing something they shouldn't. Otherwise why not just tell your parents you are camping?

He's been looking at the area and thinking about why teenage boys would go there in particular and using the info online about where the phones last pinged.

His thought was there are some quarries and caves in the area. There is one in particular thats known about and has some zip wires and bridges inside. And lots of water. He also looked up the river measurements for the weekend. On Sunday there was a peak. If they had gone in a cave, that would be bad.

The BBC article says that the police helicopter is circling in the right area for his theory.

The key is the car - they have to find the car. Which I believe they have just found according to the BBC.

That latest update about locating the car chills me. It says they've found the vehicle but nothing about the kids.

I REALLY REALLY hope they are ok and DH is just getting in a complete tiss for no reason.

Good intel, I hope DH isn’t right.

I hope that the boy just had a mother who wouldn’t let him camp in November.

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 12:22

Forget the phones. I’m not a hiker or a camper but even I know that phones are unreliable, in terms of signal and battery life, and are not necessarily going to be any use in an emergency. Either to help you or the people looking for you.

DH was trying to teach his Scouts map reading the other day. He was frustrated when they weren't very interested and one piped up 'i've got my mobile phone, why do I need to know this'.

As a rule, protocol for planning trips is NOT to rely on GPS or on mobiles for exactly this reason. DH gets frustrated by people who don't understand why you need a back up plan and why you need to understand the landscape (and how to find your way to safety without devices).

Because if you DO get into trouble, what do you do then?

Its fine if you are going to a busy place and sticking to a very clear path, but stray anywhere away from that, and it can start to be dangerous.

Even experienced people can forget this too.

hogangogs · 21/11/2023 12:23

@grass67 exactly. the amount of adults i’ve seen trying to walk up these mountains in trainers and shorts in summer, or in boots, but in the snow in winter is ridiculous. mountain rescue get called out all the time to people who have failed to prepare, and they are adults with fully formed brains. teenage boys think they’re invincible until they’re not, and they don’t have the capacity to truly understand why their decision to go wild camping in Eryri in november could have such dire consequences.

Police cordon set up
North Wales Police finds car in search for missing teenagers - BBC News

VivaDixie · 21/11/2023 12:23

Just as we heard the car has been found, a police cordon was set up near the village of Garreg. It's on the A4085, about three miles from Penrhyndeudraeth, near Porthmadog. The air ambulance is believed to have landed a few miles from the cordon. The road has been closed between Garreg and Port Aberglaslyn.

Taken from the BBC live feed- god I hopethe air ambulance presence is a good sign.
