They would have said if they’d found the boys in car, so that’s good news.

Not if they're dead or seriously injured they wouldn't. They need to assess the scene and talk to the families first before putting out statements on social media that they may need to retract. All they can say for now is they've found the car.

BeverleyMacker · 21/11/2023 12:03

The car has been found.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/11/2023 12:03

Yes, I saw that @ifonly4, loads of helicopters north of Shrewsbury (Shropshire Hills?) so they might not even have made it to Snowdonia, or they might have been there and come back.

MumLass · 21/11/2023 12:03

just north of Shrewsbury is the RAF’s helicopter training base so that’s not unusual

ifonly4 · 21/11/2023 12:03

Sorry, might have got that wrong over helicopters, looks like it's a defence flying school.

No I think they would have said the boys have been found if they had, they just wouldn’t give any further information.

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/11/2023 12:04

The only helicopters I can see on flight radar are near Shrewsbury, but there’s a few of them clustered about? Is that where they’re looking? Thought it was porthmadoc?

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/11/2023 12:04

Ah, xpost with others.

ifonly4 · 21/11/2023 12:02

Flight radar shows a heavy helicopter presence around their home town, so authorities must think there's also a strong possibility they're near home, unless there's something else going on in that area.

Those will be helicopters from the Defence Helicopter Flying School based at Shawbury near Shrewsbury.

There's a bunch of them up most days

Absolutely pointless catastrophising - I think most of us can associate with what their families are feeling and going through so want to discuss. Others want to raise awareness as that's all they can do to help. I don't think that's catastrophising.

Who is helping anyone by "raising awareness" of their worst fears on Mumsnet? It just spreads a mood of helplessness and panic. Everyone will feel sympathy for their families, but speculating on the most terrible possibilities isn't helping anyone.

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 12:06

DH has looked at this and gone a bit mad. (He's outdoorsy and hates reports like this. It always sets him off about what happened - which to an extent is good because he has to do risk assessments for trips etc).

One of the things thats particularly worrying about this case is one of the parents has said that she didn't know her son had gone camping and thought he was staying with the grandfather of a friend. That suggests they were perhaps doing something they shouldn't. Otherwise why not just tell your parents you are camping?

He's been looking at the area and thinking about why teenage boys would go there in particular and using the info online about where the phones last pinged.

His thought was there are some quarries and caves in the area. There is one in particular thats known about and has some zip wires and bridges inside. And lots of water. He also looked up the river measurements for the weekend. On Sunday there was a peak. If they had gone in a cave, that would be bad.

The BBC article says that the police helicopter is circling in the right area for his theory.

The key is the car - they have to find the car. Which I believe they have just found according to the BBC.

That latest update about locating the car chills me. It says they've found the vehicle but nothing about the kids.

I REALLY REALLY hope they are ok and DH is just getting in a complete tiss for no reason.

Stephisaur · 21/11/2023 12:06

Just seen that they've found the car, I do hope the boys are ok

Lovemycat2023 · 21/11/2023 12:07

On the radio they’ve said the car has been found, and that the police are appealing for sightings. (5live)

That sounds like they aren’t in the car.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/11/2023 12:07

@RedToothBrush your dh should take his theories to someone

ApolloandDaphne · 21/11/2023 12:07

How worrying for the parents. I hope they are found soon.

Garlicnaan · 21/11/2023 12:07

The tweet from NWP is not very reassuring.

Doteycat · 21/11/2023 12:08

I don't know which is worse.
Car with boys. Or car with no boys.
The lying is bad. My friend lied and ended up in a fatal accident.
This is horrific.

YourWinter · 21/11/2023 12:09

The car may have been found parked or crashed, but hopefully the boys are safe and unharmed, and if not actually in it, perhaps not too far away.

TBH. I think I have to agree with that despite what I've just said. Indeed it just illustrates the point...

... I am not reassured by the latest update though. Saying they've found the car but not saying they've found the kids doesn't sound good to me

I hope I'm wrong.

Snowdonia isn't somewhere to be messed about with and this case highlights why its important to tell someone where you are going if you intend to go camping there - particularly wild camping

If true, that’s good news as it rules out the most likely way that all four of them together could have come to harm.

Kids lie to their parents all the time! Often it's just little things and to avoid them getting grief for something. They're 16 and 17, they want to have some privacy from their parents. A lot of kids don't want their parents knowing everything about their lives - I know I didn't and my 16-year-old DS doesn't either.

grass67 · 21/11/2023 12:10

I think car without boys is best, there's hope they are hunkered up somewhere. It will be easier to find them now as they can only have walked so far, if they are hiking/camping.

RoseAndRose · 21/11/2023 12:10

That latest update about locating the car chills me. It says they've found the vehicle but nothing about the kids

Two possibilities
a) they're not with the car (and they need to decide what information they might need from the public before talking about next stages in the search)
b) they have found them, but are delaying the release of the news until families have been informed (which isn't in itself a particularly strong indicator of whether alive or nature of any potential injuries)

Not if you are going wild camping in snowdonia. Its not about bloody privacy, its about respecting and understanding the environment you are in.
