It's safe to walk Snowden in winter, but only if you know what you are doing and have good quality gear. I carry emergency blankets, storm shelter and an extra down coat, dry socks, heat packs etc. I was once caught in a white out (snow) on a hike and now I never hike without appropriate emergency items. It was terrifying, went totally white and the path disappeared.

cheezncrackers · 21/11/2023 11:07

I'm really pleased to hear that there are helicopters out searching for them and I sincerely hope that it's just loss of phone reception that's the issue. After all, they only disappeared 48 hours ago - it would be weird if all their phones were dead. I'm also glad to hear that the car was theirs - from the article I saw this morning it sounded like they'd got into someone else's car. It's so worrying though. I do hope they're all found safe. Teen boys can be quite silly when they're all together. Their poor families must be frantic.

It's not sounding good is it. Their poor families.

What are the roads like in that area? It's odd that all their phones are out. My gut feeling is that they've had a terrible accident in the car but there is still hope they could be sheltering somewhere and found alive. Really hope they are found before dark today 😥

The roads are pretty treacherous, especially if they were driving in heavy rain like we had a few days back.
We are on the edge of Snowdonia. I drive Dd back through the park to Uni in Aberystwyth and there are some very isolated parts with bends and drop offs through the park. Lots of people drive too fast on the lonely stretches and pass up anyone doing the speed limit.
Local news says they are still looking for the car.
I thought right away of those kids in South Wales who were by the roundabout for days before being found.

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 21/11/2023 11:08

Oh how absolutely awful for their parents, how worried they must be. I hope and pray they were just being daft teenage boys, thinking they’re invincible, and will appear in a day or two unscathed with a silly story to tell in the years to come. The alternative outcome is just too dreadful.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/11/2023 11:02

i know someone who walked up snowdonia in november and a colleague also did the same thing quite recently.
seems foolhardy

We've walked up in November, but the weather was mild that year and we only had a little drizzle on the way down. There were loads of people and the paths were full.

TheUsualChaos · 21/11/2023 11:12

@MrsCarson yes that's what I was thinking and mountain roads and drop off were my first thoughts sadly. Hope that's wrong and they are sheltering somewhere.

JacCharlton · 21/11/2023 11:12

I keep refreshing the news for an update - the longer they are missing - well I cannot imagine - no form of communication, no/little food, tired and scared - their parents must be out of their mind

marvelousmarmite · 21/11/2023 11:15

Thanks for raising awareness. Feel sick for their families and hope they're found very soon, safe and well. I'm telling myself 'safety in numbers'. Unless they've been in a car accident, surely in a predicament they'd be ok in a group.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/11/2023 11:18

@MrsCarson
yes, perhaps foolhardy was too strong a word,

worrying perhaps
but obviously the scenery is beautiful

SwishSwishBisch · 21/11/2023 11:18

It’s the car also being missing that’s the extra worrying factor here. Generally speaking a parked car left by campers who’ve got lost shouldn’t be too hard to find. The fact it’s not raises much more worrying scenarios.

Mirabai · 21/11/2023 11:19

As their car is missing I think it’s more likely that they’ve had an accident than they’re up a mountain.

cardicoat · 21/11/2023 11:20

youdontneedtopoo · 21/11/2023 10:41

I don't mean this rudely but is it a normal time of year to camp in that area? November seems late in the year with the weather but I'm not experienced at all. Are there shelters/huts or proper trails they could be using if they're experienced?

My teenage son used to go camping with his friends as an excuse to drink alcohol. I knew where they were though and he was relatively cautious as a teenager so never got into difficulties.

3luckystars · 21/11/2023 11:20

God help them.

Exactly. The car should have been relatively easy to find.

Conkersinautumn · 21/11/2023 11:22

We regularly head from Shrewsbury (though that's our meal break stop) into portmadog and back! It's a road that requires concentration. I hope they're all OK.

Movinginamonth · 21/11/2023 11:27

The weather in snowdonia can change so quickly. We've driven through in July on a rainy day. It was ok until the mist/fog rolled up the valley and across the road. It was scary.

LadyBevvy · 21/11/2023 11:27

Thanks @MrsCarson yes I know Porthmadog quite well, it's a wild area and gets very cold at night, you wouldn't want to be heading to Snowdonia without camping gear, also big drug problem in the area when I was there not so long ago and v easy to get hold of especially party drugs, so my fear would be these lads went there for a little party and lost control of their car

Praying they've just decided to treck Snowdonia and lost track of time with dead batteries and no signal but depending on what gear they have with them they would be in trouble from the elements soon if not already so hopefully they will appear today and get the mother of all bollockings from their (secretly hysterically relieved) parents

just because somewhere is in the UK doesn't mean that it's close to vicilisation, plenty of wild and remote spots in UK still that can be dangerous

Biddie191 · 21/11/2023 11:27

If they lied about where they were going, how sure is anyone that's the area they are in?
Hoping they're just tucked away in an air B&B somewhere completely oblivious to the trouble and worry they've caused.

Cudz · 21/11/2023 11:29

Really praying for a happy outcome to this 🙏

HikingforScenery · 21/11/2023 11:30

i really hope they’re found safe.

MasterBeth · 21/11/2023 11:30

You are all working yourselves up into a frenzy when there's no news.

It's four older teenagers who have gone off on their big adventure in the mountains. Of course, things may have gone awry, but it's been mild, they have tents and they could be anywhere over a large search area, so it's not surprising no-one can find them.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/11/2023 11:31

was it their car?

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/11/2023 11:31

@MasterBeth
no one is in a frenzy

Walking up Snowdon in winter isn’t foolhardy, camping without suitable equipment is. Do we know their ages ?

The good scenario is that they had parked under trees (wouldn't be seen from the air) and when they got back the car wouldn't start. In an area with no signal, they may have decided to hike to somewhere with signal and got lost.
