Thank God you posted the BBC article to replace the Mail one... us feeble minded types refuse to worry about 4 lost teenagers when it's reported by the Mail. But now we can read the BBC article in our safe spaces we can now worry!

Christ give it a fucking rest

StardustGiraffe · 21/11/2023 14:44

BBC has just added a quote from 'Gareth Pritchard, former deputy chief constable of North Wales Police and trustee of the Ogwen Montain Rescue Team charity, says locating the teenagers isthe biggest challenge facing the emergency services' which sounds like they're still looking for them, ie they weren't in the car.

I really hope this is true but this is an EX policeman talking in a radio interview, he is not part of the police now so likely doesn't have any more info than the statements have said.

Chersfrozenface · 21/11/2023 14:44

GinAndJuice99 · 21/11/2023 14:39

Is this true though? Is anyone else reporting it? Or is the Sun reporter misinterpreting the information that's publicly available? I mean I hope it is true

The relevant paragraph reads
"North Wales Police have confirmed they have located the vehicle the young men were travelling in while searching in the Porthmadog area - but there has been no sign of the teens."

The last part, after the dash, those are the words of the Sun reporter.

BettyBakesCakes · 21/11/2023 14:45

If the boys aren't in the car I guess there's still hope they'll be found. I thought I saw mountain rescue has just left but surely they would stay and help search? Unless they're just changing shifts perhaps

ButterOllocks · 21/11/2023 14:45

It's distressing all round - time to close this thread - we would have heard now if the outcome was positive

GinAndJuice99 · 21/11/2023 14:45

I don't know. In the Sun/Daily Post article it sounds like the reporter has added the bit about there being no sign of them. And in the BBC one it's a quote from an ex-police officer who wouldn't have inside knowledge.

You don’t have to be here, you know.

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 14:48

It's not about being right and wrong and being a 'detective'. DH has applied for mountain rescue in the past but we live a little too far out for it.

It's trying to be very rational about the situation on the information we know and not let it be taken over by theories that are wild.

We are both really quite upset by it - and feel it could easily be kids we know (and care about). DH spends his entire spare time trying to get teens to understand risks of the outdoors but encouraging them to enjoy them. He was a wild teen and got up to all sorts of shit he shouldn't. He WAS one of those kids.

When I came to the thread there was talk of drugs using and all sorts. These kids don't strike me as that at all. They sound good kids who are under prepared or have had a bad accident. And that's a really really common and actually understandable thing - even with experienced outdoor people who frankly should know better.

This story gets to use because it feels close to home and because we empathise with it so much.

SheIsStuck23 · 21/11/2023 14:48

I feel relieved they aren’t with the car - if that is actually true.

At least it gives hope that maybe they just wandered off and got lost, and now they’re sheltering somewhere and will be safely found. I really, really want this to end well.

I agree. And don't think ambulances, fire engine plus air ambulance would have been dispatched to a parked up empty car.

Or would have left if the search was ongoing.

Lottie4 · 21/11/2023 14:50

We all think differently but if my family or friends or even myself had gone missing, I'd want threads like this to raise awareness - in the slightest chance someone knew something. My DD's friend has parents who regularly stay in the area, so I've messaged her to check if they might be staying in their cottage - a long shot but the more than know the better.

SuperDuperCabriolet · 21/11/2023 14:51

I'm sorry if anyone feels this thread is in bad taste.

I started it, not for speculation, but for awareness.

I know if my sons were missing I would want as much coverage as possible incase anybody had information.

I have 3 teenagers and this has honestly rattled me to the core. 18 years old are not adults in maturity, especially males, mine are just silly little boys still who think they're invincible.

I sincerely hope they boys are home, safe and well by this evening.

OP posts:
GonnaGetGoingReturns · 21/11/2023 14:52

It’s really sad. My DB and his friends when younger went raving in fields in the countryside (they’re from SE London area) at similar ages to these boys and were probably under the influence of drink and drugs, god knows how they didn’t have an accident.

I hope these boys are found alive and well but whatever the outcome surely it’s time for those parents with kids a similar age to have talks with them, sensible parent talks which they can either choose to listen to or not if they haven’t done so already.

StardustGiraffe · 21/11/2023 14:52

SeasonalWitch · 21/11/2023 14:50

Or would have left if the search was ongoing.

Exactly, plus the police would still be appealing to locals to look out for the boys if they knew they were out on foot in that locale. I think unfortunately they have been found.

I disagree with the last part. They are young men, hopefully fit and healthy and although the weather isn't great, it's not minus 5 and blizzard conditions. Hopefully they are lost, but have all stuck together, that they have some food and water and can huddle in the tent with their sleeping bags until help arrives. Thinking of all their friends and families at such a horrible time, and truly hoping I'm right.

14.41. Manasa Boma is the manager at The Royal Goat Hotel in Beddgelert, a short distance from the scene where the police have blocked the road.

She told our reporter: "We’re closed for the winter but our handyman messaged me to say there had been a terrible accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who’s involved".

BrieAndChilli · 21/11/2023 14:53

DH goes to north wales all the time hiking and climbing, we are both scout leaders so also do this sort of thing with teenagers including hikes where the older ones are unaccompanied by an adult (although not in places like snowdonia) so this hits a bit close to home for me as I know a lot of teens who camp and hike.
Unfortunately I dont think all the parents if any knew where they were going, even DH makes sure I know a rough route of where he is hiking and location of overnight stay so that if god forbid anything did happen to him I could give the emergency services a good head start of where to look, you cant rely on tracking phones etc in places like that as signal is patchy.

I really hope that they boys are found and it is just a case of maybe someone is hurt but not life threatneing so they couldnt hike back.

HappySolomon · 21/11/2023 14:53

no sign of search and rescue, or of dogs. Helecopters over the area - 0. These are key components surely of looking for people in that landscape in moderate weather.

I very much can't foresee they are still 'searching'. Especially with the update from the landlady about locals referring to a 'terrible accident'.

Whereabouts did you see that?

forensics van is also a traffic collision forensics van as shown in the MEN news coverage.

How heartbreaking.

The update after that about 5 mins ago says:

'Community knowledge' will be vital to help locate the the teenagers
Gareth Pritchard, former deputy chief constable of North Wales Police and trustee of the Ogwen Montain Rescue Team charity, told BBC Radio Cymru's Dros Ginio programme that locating the teenagers is the biggest challenge facing the emergency services.

He said: "It is such a vast area and not knowing the route of the teenagers will make it even more challenging and will take a lot of time." He says the community's knowledge and help is essential in the attempts to locate the the teenagers.
