Forensics will be searching the car site for clues as to their status and whereabouts. It's pretty standard.

Surely if the car was empty the reports would have said that though as they'd still want people to be aware and keeping an eye out for the missing boys?

To me, this all reads like the boys have been found in the car.

RoseAndRose · 21/11/2023 14:07

It suggests they are all in an area with zero reception

also, I’m heartened by the ambulance service statement. They wouldn’t be sending that number of assets if there were no signs of life

Not ambulances that are staying there. Sadly it appears four have now attended but none have left.

HerMammy · 21/11/2023 14:12

@HappySolomon
I wasn't aware we only were allowed to post BBC, when I looked it was the newest report.
What are you so rude?

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/11/2023 14:13

I hope the ambulances mean they’ve been found (alive).

From experience (admittedly 30 years ago) sometimes they can have an ambulance hanging around waiting so that when/if people are found there’s no delay in treatment.

Decades ago myself and 8 friends went missing/were lost after a kayaking trip went badly wrong. Was a cold, snowy November day in the Lake District. Was night time by the time we were found, we were bundled into landrovers and taken down the track to a waiting ambulance.

All phones being dead is odd no matter how you try to spin it.

I imagine the odds off four phones dying in a car crash or similar are pretty high.

It really isn’t

if you are in an area with no signal, the network cannot detect you, so the phone is effectively dead (even if there is still charge in the battery)

WrongSwanson · 21/11/2023 14:13

tumblebumbleweed · 21/11/2023 13:52

I think it's becoming clearer this won't have a happy ending. One only has to see the Twitter updates re forensic vans now in situ .

Perhaps consider closing the thread?

Agreed. And people should think very carefully before speculating. These are real people with real families and I speak from experience when I say it is horrendous dealing with a tragedy that is in the public eye

OhmygodDont · 21/11/2023 13:24

When we drove home from north wales. All three of my children’s phones died because they are silly children who didn’t charge them properly or killer them with apps and music and shit. I one of two adults was the only person who was prepared with battery packs.

So not too odd for one or two, to of died, maybe they where taking turns streaming music via the stereo. A dead signal spot, add in cold weather kills batteries faster and the just slowly one by one since Sunday they all turned off. Plus we don’t know the ages of these phones. Mine could go two days if I left it alone 2 years old, Dd2’s can go in two hours playing games as it’s really old.

Yes, very surprised none of these lads thought to take a charge bank.

I hope they took bottles of water too.
And a flint or matches to light a fire.

They're in 6th form, so practically adults, not some 8 year olds.

But sadly, I think this trip was a spur of the moment idea, and had no planning at all.

Puddlewoman · 21/11/2023 14:14

Forensics are just techniques they use when investigating, so for example fingerprints are part of forensics. They will just be trying to unravel what happened for clues as to where they are.

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 14:15

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 21/11/2023 14:06

I think I worry more about my kids now they are young adults than when they were idiot toddlers who tried to hurt themselves in ridiculous ways as soon as my attention was diverted. There were many times when I was that age that only luck stopped me from coming to serious harm, and I don't want to rely on luck to keep my precious babies (who are now big, hairy, muscley babies) safe.

I'm so sorry for those who are worried about these lads. Hope they are home for a cuddle and a telling off soon.

I think this is a really valid point.

And I do think it's valid to talk about how parents can talk to their older teenagers about good decision making and sensible risk taking.

Parents should have those conversations - and it be in line with what type of teenager they are.

It's normal for teenage lads to want to go adventuring in a group. DH spends his spare time, doing this but making the point about the line between fine and dangerous and the need to understand it.

You don't have to be a 'bad kid' or equally nor do I want to suggest the parents have been bad or negligent. Not remotely.

We can talk about how it's never a bad thing to open up conversations about where and how to drive when you've just passed your test or how it's different with a bunch of mates in the car for example though.

And that's the type of worry and concern posters on this thread are having because they are empathesing with the situation and think it could easily happen to their kids or their friends.

Not because they are passing judgement.

takemehomecountryroads · 21/11/2023 14:18

Finding this thread really inappropriate. All the grim speculation.

LubaLuca · 21/11/2023 14:19

I agree that forensics doesn't necessarily mean there's anything dreadful. They might just be securing evidence e.g. there's been an unexplained event on the road and might believe another vehicle was involved.

travelnorth · 21/11/2023 14:20

Yes, disgusting the speculation.

Sky News are saying the van was labelled 'Collision Forensics".

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2023 14:20

Forensics sounds bad, but it could be wanting to establish something else too. Forensics could be attempting to establish time scales or different location.

We don't know.

If the boys have been found we will find out soon.

If they haven't there will be another update soon anyway.

Car location is the big thing.

Totally agree with you

Wildo · 21/11/2023 14:25

So many absolutely macabre wannabe Miss Marples on this thread. (Not the first quote here, obvs...)

100% agree. I’m sorry to pick out RedToothBrush but this incident should not be used an exercise for you and your DH to play detective. This desire to be “proven right” does not sit well. At all. These are real people. Very distasteful. Feels like a game to some.

joelmillersbackpack · 21/11/2023 14:20

What pathetic comments which always come up on threads like this.

It’s all over the bloody news. Should people just read national news without commenting or discussing it with anyone else according to your tiny minds?

In general, people are worried and desperately hope that situations like this turn out well and want to talk about it with someone.

PecanPeach · 21/11/2023 14:29

Surely if people think it's inappropriate to be discussing this then don't click on the thread? It's pretty clear from the title what people will be talking about.

It happens all the time on here
People are not allowed to discuss leading news stories apparently 🙄
Just ignore

TravellingT · 21/11/2023 14:31

I usually find threads like these end up going into Sherlock-esque detection and grief vultures but this is just people discussing what we think may have happened, and trying to find hope. No one has discussed the very obvious worst case scenarios here, we all know what could happen and we're trying to think of better scenarios that could be true. Talking about it respectfully and as calmly as possible on mumsnet isn't like going up to the families and telling them what we're thinking.

Lottie4 · 21/11/2023 14:31

If they'd planned on camping for more than 24 hours, I'm surprised one of them hasn't taken a power pack - most teens are glued to their phones and wouldn't want to risk being without power. We've stayed very close to location a couple of times and the signal is much better than many other locations we've been to. DD regularly stayed to the east of location and never had a problem contacting us.

Really hoping they're found safe.

StardustGiraffe · 21/11/2023 14:31

I don't think there's been too much wild speculation here, if anything the most speculative comments are more hopeful than what the news is looking like it's saying.

The car has been described as 'recovered', there is mention of how steep and winding the section of road is where it was found, and of the boys only just passing their driving tests.

I don't think it's too much of a leap to read between the lines there and for people to discuss it after they've been following the story hoping for good news all morning. It's the main news story on every site, it's natural people will discuss it.

Speculation over ongoing court cases isn't allowed for very good reasons as it can compromise a trial. This isn't a trial of course, just pointing that out.

Well, find another thread to read then.

joelmillersbackpack · 21/11/2023 14:33

Missing the point. Big difference between discussion of a new item and frothing at the mouth ghoulish speculation.
