Their "hot" food has been lukewarm since the government decided to tax heated foods.

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 20/11/2023 22:40

Yup! Conveyor belt, synthesised junk - just like McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Nandos, and a hundred other chains which sell shit purporting to be food. Why people fall into the trap of paying good money for this crap I will never understand

LeftyLou · 20/11/2023 23:09

I love Greggs . I used to go all the time. But last time I went after about 2 years I must say I was disappointed in it.

Is that why greggs, McD etc is only ever lukewarm now?!

Crikeyalmighty · 20/11/2023 23:41

@IDespairOfTheHumanRace I'm not sure I would classify Nando's as shit- I went in an emergency a few weeks ago and had a nice 1/2 chicken and a really good salad with it - certainly wasn't rubbish-

RocketIceLollie · 20/11/2023 23:43

I've never understood the big hype about them. Their pasties seem to be full of very processed cheeses and potatoes and the pastry is not very good quality either.

Waterfields pasties all the way. Always piping hot, as in take the roof of your mouth off! Good quality fillings! Greggs have been disappearing round these parts for years now. Overpriced & always disappointing

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/11/2023 01:02

Greggs has its place and knows its place. But surely it can't cut quality any further.

Say what you like about the current government, but you can't blame them for this as the VAT on heated up food rule was in place when I worked there and that was over 30 years ago.

But I don't know what the OP wants from her post? A pat on the back for being too discerning to enjoy food from Greggs?

SecretVictoria · 21/11/2023 05:16

Their breakfast is excellent. However, I’m always disappointed with anything after 11am, apart from the pink jammies which are lovely. I returned something as it was cold and they won’t reheat it. You have to be lucky enough to get there just as it’s come out of the oven if want it hot.

Greggs heat their food then just leave it, so it’s luck of the draw if your food is hot or cold. Maccies is because they wrap food in paper and cardboard which are crap at insulation. I never remember it being cold when they served it in polystyrene.

WakingCliche · 21/11/2023 06:06

I had a coffee and sausage roll yesterday from Greggs as on the go with a long list of stuff I had to get done for myself and others, it was £2.70. As mentioned above it has its place. There is a time for the artisanal cafe in my town that overcharges but it was not yesterday.

SoftKittyBazinga · 21/11/2023 06:12

I used to work in Greggs back in the day (about 25 years ago).

the pasties come to shop in trays. You baste them, bake them, pop them out for sale. Straight out of them oven the filling is so hot it’ll burn you, but the display cases aren’t heated so they cool quickly.

we used to have to clean every night before close and we’d try keep on top of it through the day.

I like a Greggs. If you need something cheap and filling they are great. And a Friday morning bacon sarnie and coffee is brilliant.

i do miss their cream apple turnovers though. I used to eat them on my break, but I haven’t seen one in years.

LakeTiticaca · 21/11/2023 08:17

Greggs is a breakfast/lunch establishment. If you go in a 430pm and want a pasty it won't be hot. Have a cheese toastie instead if you want something hot.
They won't be baking pasties 30 mins before they close

Deathraystare · 21/11/2023 08:28

Well, I love the vegan sausage rolls. I had one the other day before work. I am thinking of getting a Gregg's vegetarian thingy either a pasty thing or roll from Iceland for my Christmas Dinner!

TheDinnerDilemma · 21/11/2023 08:31

It’s quick and cheap, it was never going to be great but does the job occasionally!

maddiemookins16mum · 21/11/2023 08:42

I’ve never had a cold sausage roll from Greggs.
You get what you pay for.

Uncooperativefingers · 21/11/2023 08:46

Some are better than others, although it's definitely no where near as good as it was 10+yrs ago.

My local one doesn't seem to bake stuff for long enough, the pasty iss cooked through but it's still soft and pale. There's one near my brother which is great through. Golden crispy pastry and there is usually something hot as they stagger them well

grass67 · 21/11/2023 08:47

I went a while back, just feeling a bit faint and needed something. Couldn't believe how expensive it was for the quality. There's no real cheese in the cheese and onion.

orchardsquare · 21/11/2023 08:49

I don't mind a sausage roll from them now and again, only when they're hot. The prices have gone up too much though, the whole original usp was cheap, hot food on the go. The doughnuts and mince pies are ok too.

I was wondering why I got a cold bacon roll the other day!

And almost as expensive as a 'spoons!

This. Who tf goes to greggs expecting cuisine? I grab something from greggs a couple of times a month. Either when work is manic and I haven’t got time to stop for a proper lunch between house calls. Or if I’m in one of the two local cities, the kids are fucking starving, I’m skint and we want something quick to grab before the hour long bus journey home. I’m not buying 2 sausage rolls for a quid and then complaining they’re cheap ingredients and shit quality. What are you expecting? 🙄

I don’t expect cuisine but it would be nice if our local one could actually manage their baking schedule so they had food available to buy at lunchtime. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it has to be shit.

As others have said, Greggs has declined sharply in the last few years. They inexplicably discontinued things like the vegan steak bake and reduced the quality of the stuff they do sell.
