I got a cheese and onion pasty at the weekend. It was awful, no cheese flavour and there was a weird plastic/ greasy tang off it. I took two bites and binned it. I was really disappointed as it used to be my favourite.

I used to work in Greggs back in the day (about 25 years ago).

the pasties come to shop in trays. You baste them, bake them, pop them out for sale. Straight out of them oven the filling is so hot it’ll burn you, but the display cases aren’t heated so they cool quickly.

we used to have to clean every night before close and we’d try keep on top of it through the day.

I like a Greggs. If you need something cheap and filling they are great. And a Friday morning bacon sarnie and coffee is brilliant.

i do miss their cream apple turnovers though. I used to eat them on my break, but I haven’t seen one in years.

Edited

I work in one now and it doesn't sound like it's changed at all! Little and often to try and make sure people get things warm but no promises.

Staffing is ridiculous now, with online orders and increased footfall (in my branch at least, 20% up from a year ago) but we're given one extra weekender as if that helps the other 5 days of the week.

Thank God there's one staff member in my store that is all over the cleaning but I understand why it might slip especially in the afternoon when there's likely only 2 staff left to juggle service, online, baking, cleaning, and prep for the next morning. It's impossible.

I love a Greggs, either a vegan sausage roll or a cheese and onion bake. I know its nutrition value is zero and the customer experience isn't gold standard, but that isn't why I go there.

Edited to add, I actually prefer their things cold. They don't taste of anything when they're warm.

In case you didn't know and wanted your Gregg's fix actually hot, they have a range of products in Iceland. Means my bacon and cheese turnover is actually crispy not soggy

I don’t expect cuisine but it would be nice if our local one could actually manage their baking schedule so they had food available to buy at lunchtime. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it has to be shit.

As others have said, Greggs has declined sharply in the last few years. They inexplicably discontinued things like the vegan steak bake and reduced the quality of the stuff they do sell.

It's not that simple to manage a bake plan. Say you have 4 steak bakes left - great, get another 8 in, 12 will be plenty. Five minutes later you get a Just Eat order for 10. Suddenly only two left for the counter and another 18 minutes for the next batch. The next day you think right, I'll put 12 on a tray. No order comes through, it suddenly quietens down in the shop and for the next 2hrs you've got a tray of cold steak bakes no one wants. The amount of abuse we get, believe me, we don't want empty counters either!

I guess that’s just your local one then as I can’t ever remember going to a greggs and thinking ‘this is shit’. It’s the uks leading bakery chain, and Google tells me it’s constantly expanding and has opened around double the amount of restaurants every year for quite a while now, including all through covid up until 2022, with revenues of 1.51 billion pounds. That’s a hell of a lot of people who clearly don’t think it’s shit. Personally I’ve never had anything cold that wasn’t meant to be either.

I didn’t actually say the food was shit, I said our local Greggs is shit. I was also responding to the PP who was asking why people expect it be good when it’s so ”cheap”.

I understand your point about the bake schedule @BloodyHellCat and believe me, having worked retail/hospitality my entire life and having both kids working retail, the last thing I’d do is abuse someone about it. I am allowed a little grumble to myself though when yet again they don’t have the only thing I eat (vegan sausage rolls now the vegan steak bake is gone) available at lunchtime. JustEat doesn’t exist where I live so I can’t even blame them!😂

Their millionaire's shortbread is good though. And the iced fruit buns. Mmmmmm
