How do you find happiness or enjoyment in winter?

I'm already struggling with the cold and rain and dark. In summer, I often drive out to the countryside for a walk or to the coast for a swim in the sea. If nothing else I sit out in the garden enjoying the sun.
But for the last few weeks I feel like I get in from work, get some tea, and am then just wishing my life away until I can go to bed.

Does anyone else relate? And if not, how do you stay cheerful in winter?

It’s basically do you like to sit under a blanket for 6 months or do you like to get out and about in the daylight.

I love getting out and about in the daylight and sitting under blankets.

What I don't like is getting out and about in summer when it's hot and humid, everywhere is absolutely rammed, and I feel sweaty, uncomfortable and sticky!

I hibernate in Summer, too warm, too peopley, too bright, too busy, too summery. I drive my husband insane.

It's the same in our house, lol.

DH is a real outdoorsy person and a lot of his hobbies are weather dependent, so he hates winter as it's normally too cold, dark, icy or windy to do any of them, and the nice days always happen when he's at work Grin

He hates this time of year whereas I absolutely love it. In summer I hide inside while he sweats himself stupid outside without me!

I'm autistic and for me it's very much a sensory thing.

Summer in the UK is humid, sticky and unpleasant. You have to wear sunscreen or layers to protect your skin. You sweat, you smell, you can't get comfortable because you're hot and sweaty all the time. Our homes aren't designed for the heat so it's not like you can escape it by going inside and sitting with the air-conditioning on. I find being too hot really overwhelming and stressful.

In winter, you can put layers on if you're cold. You know that you can come home, put the heating on and stay warm and cosy all evening. I don't sweat, I don't feel uncomfortable, I don't feel overwhelmed - instead I feel safe and cosy and comfortable.

I don’t find it sticky in summer - I mean I sweat obvs but natural fibres keep it comfy. Home is cool, or on about 2 very hot days I put on a fan. Layers don’t make me warm - just cold and uncomfortably bulked up.

@Icantbedoingwithit it's definitely just different strokes for different folks.

For me, there are less obligations and pressures in winter too, which definitely helps me feel less overwhelmed!

I have exactly the same obligations - why would they change? But in winter leaving the house is a strain.

I am thinking of joining a local choir.

I have booked a hair restyle end of January.

Gives things to look forward to!

I’m in a choir. And a band. And a book club. I just don’t want to leave the house when it’s fucking freezing.

I wish it didn't bother me, but it does - to the point that summer in the UK can actually be quite a stressful time of year for me.

In other, drier countries it doesn't bother me nearly as much. It's the humidity/closeness that does it for me.

cardibach · 13/01/2024 19:03

I agree with PP that in winter you can control your temperature
Sorry @Flowsbeneathus but this is crap. I can’t control my temp in winter. Gloves make my hands colder. I hate layers, and when I do them I’m just cold and also bulky and uncomfortable- and if I go inside anywhere I’m hot and sweaty.
I don’t often feel uncomfortable in a British summer. Natural fibres. Loose clothes. Done.

And yes, most self-proclaimed winter lovers have spent the entire thread talking about the things they do to make themselves feel happy that alleviate the discomfort of winter. I think that's what other folk are getting annoyed at - the refusal to accept what they're doing. Rhapsodic accounts of spending months under a blanket just means you like blankets.

This makes no sense to me Confused

Yes, I like blankets but I can't sit and get cosy under a warm blanket when it's 30 degrees outside and I'm sweating just walking down the street. Ergo I like winter because it means I can sit under blankets - just like the summer lovers like summer because it means they can do all the outdoorsy things they enjoy.

But why do you want to sit under a blanket? To get warm, presumably? You’re warm without in summer.

Icantbedoingwithit · 13/01/2024 19:08

@cardibach honestly can you just let people like what they like without picking holes in everyone’s reasons. Winter is going nowhere for a while and no amount of pulling people apart for their love of it is going to change that.

But I don't feel comfortable and warm sitting in shorts and t-shirt while simultaneously sweating and feeling all flustered and sticky with the heat.

I feel overwhelmed and stressed and uncomfortable and irritable.

Why is it rammed? Where are you going? It’s rarely hot in the U.K. - maybe 2 sweaty weeks.

Because I live in a pretty, popular area that fills up with tourists every time the sun shines and the temperature goes above 15 degrees.

You seem very incapable of understanding that people have different lives and different experiences to you!

I’m not picking holes in your reasons any more than you are picking holes in mine.
Just let me hate winter which is 5 months and love summer which is about 6 days and stop complaining as though you are the hard done to one.
