How do you find happiness or enjoyment in winter?

I'm already struggling with the cold and rain and dark. In summer, I often drive out to the countryside for a walk or to the coast for a swim in the sea. If nothing else I sit out in the garden enjoying the sun.
But for the last few weeks I feel like I get in from work, get some tea, and am then just wishing my life away until I can go to bed.

Does anyone else relate? And if not, how do you stay cheerful in winter?

But we all live in different parts of the country and have different bodies and feel the heat (or the cold, or the humidity) in different ways.

I have said several times that I have autism and lots of sensory issues, so what would be totally manageable for many people is almost impossible for me. That's not me re-writing the weather, it's giving my own, genuine experience of it.

I totally appreciate other people are different and said as much upthread.

Absolutely this.

Yeah I do get it. Because I see it on here - ooh it’s 20 degrees it’s
so hot can’t cope. After months of freezing weather.

But that doesn’t change the weather. It is someone’s experience and opinion that is valid to them. Why do you care so much what people say?

But my experience of 20 degree heat has no impact on your experience of it, surely?

margotrose · 13/01/2024 19:54

And some people genuinely do struggle in warmer weather just as you struggle in the winter months.

I don’t like it. End of. I would never question or judge anyone who did enjoy because it has no bearing on my own experience or preference.

Exactly.

PP even admitted to being nasty to people who admitted to liking winter and hating summer - what's the point of that?!

It’s very strange.

Delatron · 13/01/2024 19:59

As has been said. People with SAD struggle through 6+
monghs of cold and dreary weather then often we go straight in to a dull rainy summer. This so so disappointing for us as we get no respite (maybe a few weeks) before we’re back in to 6 + of winter weather.

Those who struggle with the heat will
maybe be struggling for 3/4 weeks at most.

That is all I have to say. If you can’t see the difference then that’s on you and your own short sightedness. Because if the tables were turned and we had 9 months of heat and humidity I would have nothing but sympathy for you. And I wouldn’t dream of moaning for the few weeks the weather was how you liked it.

Yep, that's me😬 I genuinely can't cope with weather over 17/18C because of my f*cked thyroid.

I did have sympathy and I still do BUT it doesn’t give anyone the right to say I cannot say I don’t like Summer or I think it’s too hot today. Why would you even care if I thought it was too hot! You are happy! I couldn’t care less if someone says it’s too cold!

Yep, I get that. And it's totally okay to be upset or disappointed or miserable about it too.

Personally, I struggle for much longer than that.

I can have sympathy for someone and complain about something I personally dislike at the same time. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Apparently you're wrong and even if you have illnesses or sensory problems you're not allowed to complain because the summer lovers have it much worse Wink

margotrose · 13/01/2024 20:08

Also, PP did actually admit to being nasty to people who dare to complain about disliking the summer. That's a bit more than moaning.

Delatron · 13/01/2024 20:14

I’ve said I’d have nothing but sympathy if the tables were
turned. And I’d like you to imagine struggling for 6-9 months every year. I don’t know why SAD is so downplayed on here. It’s very debilitating.

Winter lovers don’t control how long Winter lasts for. Like I said, I get SAD in Summer and my depression is rife. I would hate it to last longer than it does and I honestly do have sympathy for anyone who suffers with it for so long in the Winter months. Must be horrendous. Depression is a bitch.

I don't need to imagine it, I've lived it. And I get it. It's horrible when you can't escape the kind of weather that makes you miserable. Believe me, I have endlessly sympathy for people who struggle at this time of year.

But none of that means I can't also complain about the time of year that I personally struggle with. It's not a competition and it doesn't mean I have less sympathy for you as a result.

If I suddenly found a way to love summer, that wouldn't change how you feel about winter or how you experience it, after all.

I really don't think anyone here has downplayed the impact of SAD.

It's just that even if we all decided we hated winter as well, your experience of it would still be just as shit, unfortunately.

No, I didn’t. I was referring to other people thinking I was being nasty. Stop creating your own facts.

I'm going off your post:

"People who get the weather they like for the bulk of the year think it’s fab and those of us who find winter positively depressing (not a turn of phrase, actual clinical depression) should just shut up because it’s unreasonable to be nasty to them because they don’t like being a bit warm for about 2 weeks."

That very much reads like you're admitting to being nasty to people who disagree with you.

margotrose · 13/01/2024 20:32

If I misread then I'm happy to apologise but that's how it came across to me and others on here.

Unless you actually have reading comprehension and can see that I’m saying people say I’m being nasty because I point out that they get what they want for about 50 out of 52 weeks. I think it’s pretty clear.

As I said, that's not how it reads to me. I don't have "reading comprehension" but I do have autism and take things very literally sometimes.

It comes across (to me) like you're saying "People who get the weather they like for mot of the year think I should shut up because I'm being unreasonable to be nasty to them".

If that's not what you meant, then that's on me and I apologise, but it's very much how it came across.

Icantbedoingwithit · 13/01/2024 20:41

Not how it reads at all…. But you already know that and are backpedaling.
