Bad Hair Day Snl GIF by Saturday Night Live

Currently sitting in Gatwick Airport waiting for my flight home, have been here 4 hours and counting so plenty of time to have a wander round and I'm wondering why there are no hairdressers in airports? I'd love the opportunity to get a blow dry now, my hair feels awful from travel stress and im sure I'd feel much better if I could get it done and my make up too if I'm feeling greedy!!
Surely that's a great idea, plenty of people here waiting round with not much to do once you've shopped and eaten.
Would anyone else like to get theirs done? I can't be the only one!
This is how I feel right now!! 😂😂

I have definitely seen them, usually part of a spa/salon, but only in nicer airports (not Gatwick 😂).

gotomomo · 19/11/2023 19:57

Not seen a hairdresser but there used to be at least a beauty place at Birmingham

Discwriter · 19/11/2023 19:57

Ive seen spas! Always think it's a great idea but then also can't be arsed to actually get anything done.

There used to be a hairdressers on the boat to Ireland. My granny always used to go Grin

Littlebitpsycho · 19/11/2023 20:04

I would so get my hair done if it was an option - nothing serious though, just a blow dry or something

Raspberrymoon49 · 19/11/2023 20:05

I remember going to a salon at Bangkok airport, it was lovely to have hair done while travelling

Ah took me ages to type my 1st reply so I'm just going to answer everyone here 😂

Yeah the boat is a great idea too!

I've seen the "salon" in Gatwick but it's a bit out in the open and I'm too shy to use it!

Bangkok is going on my list of naice airports! Anyone get any other ones?

About 15 years ago I had 10 hours in Hong Kong airport, and I spent a fair amount of these hours in the luxurious showers and dressing rooms. I thought it was a great idea!

xyz111 · 19/11/2023 20:25

Probably because the rents are so high in airports, the services would have to be really expensive. Someone I knew worked for one of the big fashion brands and said they make no profit from the airport stores, they're there purely for marketing so people know the brand name.

Ilovesausagerolls · 19/11/2023 21:00

Oh showers and dressing rooms sound like heaven right now!!

Ah that explains it and there was I thinking I was a genius having the idea!! 😂😂

I suspect it's only really profitable in airports with lots of people with long layovers, like the Asian ones mentioned upthread. Singapore is another one - lots of Australian stopovers so more people have time to get their hair done.

I had similar for a stopover in Seoul airport about 15 years ago - had a massage and then a shower, felt amazing getting on my next flight. It was bliss.

OneFamily · 19/11/2023 21:09

Not a hairdresser but had a brilliant leg & foot massage in Colombo once, much quicker than a hair service and no so critical to get right either.

Needanewnameagain · 19/11/2023 21:10

I once got my nails done at Glasgow Airport when a flight was delayed. It was a lovely treat to pass the time. I remember thinking it was a great idea and would love to see more options like this at airports

Humbugg · 19/11/2023 21:23

Had a massage in Beijing airport. Was average

Northe · 19/11/2023 21:29

Beijing has free showers even in economy areas so brilliant to freshen up. Even in Newcastle you can get a mani and your brows tidied.

fuckityfuckityfuckfuck · 19/11/2023 21:32

Imagine having a hair cut and then a long haul flight with the itchy snippets of hair down your top. Awful!

feellikeanalien · 19/11/2023 21:32

I had my hair cut on the ferry from Bilbao to Portsmouth. Luckily it was quite calm!

SleepPrettyDarling · 19/11/2023 21:33

Airports don’t want people arriving hours+ before flights. They need to be able to forecast the traffic of passengers arriving. Post Covid when airports were struggling to restaff, the congestion was absolutely mental with queues to just get into the terminal, let alone through security. But I agree, a quick nail bar or blow dry is something I’d definitely book.

Kwasi · 19/11/2023 21:39

It could be something to do with scissors.

StamppotAndGravy · 19/11/2023 21:42

Schiphol has spas, but I'm not sure about blow drys. I get my nails done on the way through if I'm going to wedding. It's the only time I sit still enough to keep the polish shiny

notimagain · 19/11/2023 22:20

I'd agree with @xyz111 and @SleepPrettyDarling .

Firstly it's rumoured the rents/charges for commercial space airside at places like Heathrow are absolutely astronomic.

Secondly it's definitely the case that airport terminals these days designed with a certain rate of flow in mind (as in passengers/hour) and there's not much interest in getting people to the airport any earlier than is required to get them to spend cash relatively quickly in the shops and restaurants.

Ilovesausagerolls · 20/11/2023 00:44

Home now and still feeling like I badly need to wash my hair but that can wait till tmrw at this time!
Going to have to check out the airports mentioned, they sound great! 😊
