Thread 11 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Whoops, missed the filling up of the previous thread! (thread 10).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Nor me, nor either DH.

StephanieSuperpowers · 02/01/2024 12:38

Same. I think though there are usually some...signs?

VictorianBigot · 02/01/2024 12:54

This is so funny:

‘VampireWeekday · Yesterday 22:22
This reminds me of when I was a teenager and had just started having sex, my boyfriend asked me "did you come?" and I thought - what a fucking idiot, doesn't he know that only men can ejaculate??? Embarrassed to say that I had been having sex for quite a while before realising that women can actually orgasm. Should have gone to that Swiss finishing school to learn proper 'finishing' etiquette’

Spoke to Mr Veg's mum yesterday. Mid-November she started a nasty bout of sciatica that got into both legs. She tried to see a physio but they only had a sports therapist and he just made it worse and the poor woman hurt so much she was in tears. Couldn't drive, walking really painful, as was standing. Not sleeping or eating properly. We found a female acupuncturist so booked her in there and she had two sessions. The first one made an immediate difference and the second also helped greatly. Yesterday she told us that she'd gone out on NYE and danced until 1am and was feeling better than ever. She's 82!

VictorianBigot · 02/01/2024 14:46

Wow! I’d really like to try acupuncture.

kittykarate · 02/01/2024 14:56

I went to see a physio for a painful back (psoas related) and they did a mixture of acupuncture, exercise and poking you until you hurt. Absolutely brilliant.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 02/01/2024 14:56

I had it for sciatica in 2022 and it was very effective, hence recommending MiL give it a go. I'd certainly have it again. You barely notice the needles which was a relief.

Kucinghitam · 02/01/2024 14:58

I was skim-reading the thread and was briefly puzzled as to the sexual applications of acupuncture.

It's blowing an absolutely hooley here today. Wondering if @SinnerBoy is still at sea.

SqueakyDinosaur · 02/01/2024 17:59

Here too. Just drove from West Dorset to London - very windy all the way, and a tree blocking 2 lanes of the M3 just after Winchester.

My car was rocking about at the traffic lights earlier Confused

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 02/01/2024 18:15

Here it sounded like the roof was about to blow off. This time of year I'm usually up a ladder pruning fruit trees but today I'd have been blown into the next field.

duc748 · 02/01/2024 18:23

Just before Xmas a big slate tile blew off my roof and landed neatly and unbroken, on the pavement outside my front door. Fortunately, it did not land on my head, or anyone else's; it would have sliced someone in half. Or the roof of my soft-top car, parked a few feet away.

StephanieSuperpowers · 02/01/2024 18:43

Soft topped car, no less!

MouseMinge · 02/01/2024 20:11

That dog has scared the bejeezus out of me! Wtf is going on with the tongue, the teeth, the mouth?!

Re the sex thing. It's been a while. I've made noises but I think her husband has been reading a very strange etiquette book! I did once sing "To be a Pilgrim" but that was a joke with housemates and only ever happened once.

MouseMinge · 02/01/2024 20:24

Today has been an odd one. Last night out of the blue I vomited in technicolor. Well, that's a lie. There was no food so I vomited a lot of yellow. But, then I slept and while I'm still managing to sleep I can cope with this.

Woke up this morning and had an urge for a bit of chocolate. When you have chemo - as others know - they give you a "goodie bag", like the Oscars but shitter. There was a small Heroes size finger of fudge in it. I ate it. The whole time I was eating it I was both enjoying it and feeling sick. It was a strange combination. My friend B came for a visit and I asked her to bring a box of Heroes which I have so far not eaten any of but I do fancy a bit of Wispa so that might happen. I have had a little bit of Lucozade too. I remembered that I have another sort of antiemetic so I've tried that because the nausea isn't shifting and I'm hoping that might help. The lack of being able to eat solids is making me quite dizzy and I really need to get something down me soon. I have the feeding tube - thank actual fuck! - but it's just not the same. My poor stomach is very confused. Please all keep your fingers crossed that tomorrow is a day when I can get some food down me properly.

In other helpful stuff today, my door buzzer is not working, and neither is my upstairs neighbours. We both have the same thing sort of connected or whatever. Stairs are not good for me right now. Luckily, the chap upstairs came down with me today to bring up my Wiltshire farm order. Well, he took the order up while I crawled up the stairs and thought he was orange. Yeah, no idea either, but my eyes went normal eventually. He came into mine and fed the boys for me. When B came around it was similar again, crawling, having a bit of a kneel down and then into the flat. She went out and got three lots of new keys cut for me so that she can now let herself in and out and I have a couple of other people I'll be giving spares to until we sort out the buzzers. The ones we have now are ancient and I think it's time to just go for something new. In the meantime I don't have to worry about falling down the stairs so much!

Anyway, a long one! Apologies! Things aren't great, I'm a bit miserable but visits help, late night phone calls help and so does sleep. I must be heading toward feeling a bit better soon and I'll just have to hang on until that happens.

VictorianBigot · 02/01/2024 20:54

Really glad your neighbour was there to help @MouseMinge and I hope the different antiemetic helps. I'm just down the road if you ever need anything, or fancy a wrongmo visit even. Just shout x

Gonners · 02/01/2024 21:14

Oh @MouseMinge that does sound like a miserable day. Glad you sorted out the spare keys, but FFS, what a time for the door buzzers to break down!

I'm sure an empty stomach makes you feel hungry (and therefore worse) even if you are being nourished via the tube. If you can get liquids down, have you tried putting decent tinned soups through a blender? Baxters French Onion and their Lentil & Bacon are our go-to soups for both cheering-up (deliciousness) and some actual nourishment.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/01/2024 21:41

I did once sing "To be a Pilgrim" but that was a joke with housemates and only ever happened once.

Just that line, or the whole thing?

Do you have any ice pops, Mouse? Not really the time of year for them, but I seem to remember my StepSis found they helped with post-chemo nausea.

MouseMinge · 02/01/2024 22:26

@VictorianBigot I may well take you up on that. I had no idea you were close by.

@Gonners I have a few different tins of Baxters and I'm hoping that tomorrow I'll get some down me. I bloody lovely Baxters and their cream of tomato is the food of the Gods!

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn More than that line but not the whole song.

I don't have ice pops but I might order some in tomorrow. Good call. I have managed a bit of Lucozade tonight. More than I thought I would which is no bad thing. Sugar! I'm off to bed in a minute and I'll try to eat a bit of chocolate safe in the knowledge that it could all go horribly wrong!

Thank you all so much for being here, you lot. It helps. I know it probably doesn't seem like it does but it really does.

VictorianBigot · 02/01/2024 22:40

@MouseMinge Just a hop, skip and a jump from the big W.

And yes to ice lollies. Or just frozen juice, in a bowl. I think the texture is helpful. They kept me alive when I had glandular fever and was on my own, I'd stagger to the kitchen half blind for one then stagger back to bed for 12 hours.

MouseMinge · 02/01/2024 22:43

Right. Definitely on the list for tomorrow.

I'm going to feed the boys and then crawl into bed. I'm so bloody glad I can sleep. Night all and, again, thanks. x

SinnerBoy · 02/01/2024 23:27

(((Mouse)))

I hope the anti emetic works for you, I had high hopes that you'd be like my BiL and not be very ill.

SinnerBoy · 02/01/2024 23:31

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · Today 15:52

It's blowing an absolutely hooley here today.

We came alongside yesterday evening and may sail on the 4th. I had to walk for an hour to get to the pub yesterday afternoon, the Port Authority wouldn't let me out of their gate, so a 15 minute walk away from the pub to the lorry gate.

The security guard told me the Port Authority are supposed to let foot traffic through their turnstile and that they are fucking arseholes.

I wasn't bothered, I'd planned to have a walk, anyway.
