Bad form to turn up at a birthday party with nothing?

I think it is. Having recently hosted a kids party I’m guessing people disagree with me.

Bad form to turn up with nothing or completely normal nowadays?

(very middle class professional demographic by the way, no money problems).

Some of my adult contemporaries note that birthday and Xmas gifts to family children/teens are expected but never acknowledged. And the adults don't even get a birthday card from the children they buy presents for

these are grown assed adults. They don’t have to buy for anyone. They choose to year in and year out knowing that they won’t get an acknowledgment. So… if they don’t like it, why do they do it?

Well obviously they stopped doing it. 🤣 They're 'grown assed adults' and chose to stop. Duoh!

RudsyFarmer · 19/11/2023 10:04

Often when the adults choose to stop buying for the grown up children, their parents get mortally offended and a rift develops. This stuff is tricky to navigate.

You’ll be glad to know all was well that ended well as I got a late night message apologising profusely for forgetting the birthday child’s card and gift. I’m obviously feeling guilty now for this thread and delighted I can stop feeling put out 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. My child had an amazing birthday and everyone was very kind and generous, so I’m beyond grateful this morning 💐

As my son's party he got from cards and sweets to gift bags, he just loved having his friends there.

He had a that much fun he was knackered by the end he forgot the presents were there.

CheesyJacketPotato · 19/11/2023 10:14

I have friends from a wide range of demographics OP & I can tell you with certainty that people who have less are generally more generous.

Ah, so glad it all ended well. MN can be a good place to sense check stuff without jumping in in real life and making a bigger mess.

Some of the howling replies on here though. Ooft.

Idealgift, that wasn’t gossiping. It was me being honest about why I wasn’t contributing to a very expensive present.

Yes. We knocked on her door and persuaded her mum to let her come.
