Why did my tv turn itself on ?

I woke up to my alarm this morning and was getting ready for work, came out of the bathroom and suddenly heard a woman's voice coming from downstairs . I stood at the top of the landing, looked down (my stairs come off of my lounge) and saw the tv was on. I have a free view box and have to use 2 remotes to turn the tv on .
I live alone.

A neighbour with the same TV?

FloweryName · 15/11/2023 19:34

It was a ghost, obviously.

orchardsquare · 15/11/2023 19:35

Ours sometimes does it when we've had a power cut. When it comes back on, lots of things switch on.

Ladybirdbookworm · 15/11/2023 19:36

Mine has done this a few times - no idea why ??
My house isn’t haunted but as I’m typing this I’m a tad concerned that a ghost might be watching and thinking ‘well I’ll show her’

TheLurpackYears · 15/11/2023 19:36

Mine would do thay when it was on it's last legs, and at great volume. Googling it suggested it was a fault with TV of the same brand.

Wolfiefan · 15/11/2023 19:40

Is it a Phillips with ambilight? Ours has done it a few times. Fucking thing!

No power cut - my microwave clock wasn't flashing.

Your neighbours probably have the same telly. New batteries and it can cross houses. You could be mischievous if you really wanted to.

gamerchick · 15/11/2023 19:47

Tbf you shouldnt really leave them on standby.

I've just texted my next door neighbour to ask her.

If someone had the same tv as me would they be able to turn my tv and free view box on ? I have to use both remotes to get a channel to come on.

We've got two Blaupunkt TVs,both turn themselves on. The living room one used to spring into life at 11pm every night. The timer is set to off but now the clocks have gone back it comes on at 10pm. It also comes on at other times as well. Really strange but not uncommon I don't think.

BertieBotts · 15/11/2023 19:57

TV remotes usually work through infrared, they don't go through walls. Unless it's a smart remote anyway.

mooncloud1 · 15/11/2023 20:00

I used to have a tv that did this!
It wouldn't do it every night but when it did it was always at 3.03am. I reset it, checked for any timers and it still did it. In the end I would just switch it off at the plug Grin

Jitterybugs · 15/11/2023 20:00

My 6 month old JVC has done that a few times recently after I’ve turned it off. A few mins later it turns itself on again 🤷‍♀️

eandz13 · 15/11/2023 20:03

Do you have a dog/cat/hamster...../squirrels in the area and an open window?

Lovemychair · 15/11/2023 20:11

No pets and didn't notice any squirrels!

Sometimes Dh has set a reminder for a programme on the TV, forgotten about it, come to bed and the TV has switched itself on.

Lovemychair · 15/11/2023 20:41

This was at 05:30 this morning, I definitely haven't set any reminders.

Was the TV leaking?

Northernsouloldies · 15/11/2023 20:42

If it plugged itself in then it's time to start worrying. 😁

toomuchfaster · 15/11/2023 20:55

The power cut doesn't need to be enough to reset anything else. My TV has come on due to a power cut several times in the night that other appliances haven't noticed.

MargaritaHargitaysLittleSister · 15/11/2023 21:01

My TV does the exact same thing. It's not even a year old. My DC has just managed to turn it down using my remote upstairs in her bedroom. Bloody things. They don't make things like they used to

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 15/11/2023 21:01

It'll be the new government initiative they've snuck in. Turning on your tv for you so you can absorb the subliminal toryness. The electorate shouldn't be trusted to turn on their own tvs.
