Something about Bristol

I've been to Bristol a couple of times to do tourist stuff in the past and have recently been a few times for work. There's something about it that gives me the heebie jeebies!

It's not like I feel unsafe or think it's grim but there's something my monkey brain doesn't like. It gives me a creeping sense of doom and I've never felt such relief to be on the M5.

I seen posts on here before about people getting squiffy at certain places. What's it all about? Any rational explanations?

I'm not woo but I'm starting to think it was the scene of my murder in a previous life!!

It's Bristol. If I ever have to go back it'll be too soon!

WonderingWanda · 14/11/2023 19:46

Do you think maybe it's just an unfamiliar unsettled feeling? I remember feeling that way when I've moved to 2 new cities but over time familiarity changed how I felt.

My son lives in Bristol and loves it. I always enjoy going there and have never felt weird . Other spoon was in Coventry and he became really low living there. I also found it very depressing and oppressive.
For me ,it probably was because son wasn’t happy so it made me sad.
Am guessing that’s why I liked Bristol because son loves it there.

I’ve seen the same thing posted before and it’s always about Bristol. I’ve only briefly travelled through the airport so don’t have an opinion of it myself.

I drive all over for my job, often in places I've never been to before. This is the only place I've had this "doom", and it's every time!

So funny - I was saying the exact same thing a few nights ago! For me, it's feeling that everyone is gearing up for a big night out or desperately trying to get over one. There's a weird tension in the air, like a Friday night pay day in London, but more intense. Perhaps it's because it feels like I'm on one big uni campus? Like I'm just not supposed to be there?

It's odd - I thought it would feel friendly and relaxed but it doesn't. It feels edgy and a bit grim - like the day after the big all nighter.

Sparehair · 14/11/2023 19:51

There’s an area of my town that gives me the creeps. It’s actually a v good area but there’s something about the light. Feels sort of murderish. Dh feels the same way about it weirdly.

I've never had the feeling at the airport, only in Bristol itself.

Maybe it's just obvious to them you're not one of them ?

MakeANewPlanStan · 14/11/2023 19:53

I'm with you on this. DC both love Bristol, my cousin loved it, I understand rationally why people rate it... but I just feel on edge the whole time.

Yes! That's it, there's a tension feeling! But I'm not woo so why am I feeling it!! What is my fight/flight response picking up that I can't see!!

I agree, I feel like that in Bristol too.

Newgirls · 14/11/2023 19:55

It has an edgy, anything could happen vibe but for lots of people that’s the appeal

clifton is very different from the town centre though - calm and quite grand

I feel the same about Bath which is weird because on paper it’s a super city with plenty to offer, and friends who live there enjoy it. I just feel this sense of gloom.

PerspiringElizabeth · 14/11/2023 19:56

Ah I love Bristol but Bath for me is the exact feeling you describe. Loads of people love it but also loads of people hate it!

Mumaway · 14/11/2023 19:58

I had exactly the same feeling when looking at the Uni there 20yrs ago.

NameChangedForThis195206644 · 14/11/2023 19:58

Feel completely the same about Bristol. I always feel so uncomfortable, on edge, it has a very hostile feeling to me. I can't put my finger on why though! Weird

Wiccan · 14/11/2023 20:01

It's amazing how many people think Bath is a nice place architecture etc when in fact its quite a shit hole .

FunkyMonks · 14/11/2023 20:05

I love Bristol my husband is from there I personally prefer Bristol over Cardiff.
But Bristol is one of those places I love to visit but couldn't live in as I don't like Cities as such to be stuck in 24/7 I think I would get depressed quickly living in traffic constantly and too many people around 🤣🤣 much prefer a mixture of rural and towns rather than major cities.

Finesterre · 14/11/2023 20:09

I grew up in Bristol and yes, it is indeed quite an 'edgy' place. It is very mixed. I was back there earlier this week re visiting some old teenage haunts. I did laugh at Stokes Croft being named as one of the top 5 places to live (in my day it was called St Pauls and was full of prostitutes and drugs)! 'Lively' and unique' in estate agents speak.
There are some terrible post war buildings but I still have a deep love for it - I feel it is a very mellow and laid back place, one of the most culturally vibrant places in the UK

🤣🤣🤣 estate agents say that about Southmead as well .

Rocksonabeach · 14/11/2023 20:16

I love it. But I don’t live in the city but over the suspension bridge in North Somerset. I really love it. Amazing and very diverse and very friendly.
