Something about Bristol

I've been to Bristol a couple of times to do tourist stuff in the past and have recently been a few times for work. There's something about it that gives me the heebie jeebies!

It's not like I feel unsafe or think it's grim but there's something my monkey brain doesn't like. It gives me a creeping sense of doom and I've never felt such relief to be on the M5.

I seen posts on here before about people getting squiffy at certain places. What's it all about? Any rational explanations?

I'm not woo but I'm starting to think it was the scene of my murder in a previous life!!

My daughter feels this way about Brighton. She went once on a school trip at about 14. Nothing bad happened, she had friends with her in the class, they went to a couple galleries and had lunch sitting on some steps. But she'll never willingly go back there! She just did not like it at all.

Princessbananahamock · 14/11/2023 20:27

I get a horrible feeling in Knowle West bad vibes “your not local are you” Royston vasy. @Spinxsta they arent human from that particular area probably Mos Eisley. Get the same feeling in Frome as well, perhaps they migrated.

DiverseButters · 14/11/2023 20:30

I absolutely love Bristol.

Diverpanda · 14/11/2023 20:34

I love Bristol. I feel very comfortable there.

There are places I've felt very spooked/uncomfortable but that's not one of them.

I absolutely hate Cambridge. It's crowded and claustrophobic.

DorritLittle · 14/11/2023 20:36

it's feeling that everyone is gearing up for a big night out or desperately trying to get over one

I am from Bristol and this is quite an accurate observation!

Reba767 · 14/11/2023 20:40

I feel exactly the same!!

RandomUsernameHere · 14/11/2023 20:45

I completely get what you mean about Bristol. Can't really put my finger on it, but it just seems really grey and dark even in summer.

grapesandplums · 14/11/2023 20:46

I live in Bristol. Very very rarely go to the centre as I feel the same way. Have always hated it! Love Cribbs however, and my little slice of suburbia close by. I'd love to move to Cornwall, where I feel much more at home

gotomomo · 14/11/2023 20:49

I live near Bristol, I like it, well not all of it - hartcliffe is best given a wide berth

menopausalmare · 14/11/2023 20:52

I lived there for 7 years and loved it. However, like all cities, it has its seedy side and there are certain parts that feel 'sinister' and old/dark with its rich history.

Butsheisnot · 14/11/2023 20:53

I love Bristol! It's my happy place. Spent many great years living and working there.

I hated Brighton though when I had to work there. So depressing. I find a lot of the south coast like that. Particularly the New Forest as well. I can't wait to leave if I ever have to go.

I took my husband up to the Edge once in Alderley Edge (I grew up near there). It was late at night so we couldn't go into the Edge itself but he found the whole drive up to it incredibly spooky and wanted to go. He's not at all woo, I might add ( I am though!)

Me too

🤣🤣🤣 estate agents say that about Southmead as well .

18 months of Southmead was more than enough for me. I spent 12 years in various parts of Bristol and made some great friends but was glad to return north. It's changed so much that it's no longer familiar to me.

I do get the weird vibes about Glastonbury though, hate going there.

fortnumsfinest · 14/11/2023 20:59

This is so strange as I can remember a previous post about somewhere giving you the heebie jeebies, this was years ago and that was about Bristol too.

BethDuttonsTwin · 14/11/2023 21:04

I feel like this about Nottingham but I did live there for about 8 years. It’s like at the weekend it just becomes a ghost town as you come out of the city centre. Long streets with lines of terraced house and old factories on and no one around. I went back to visit friends one time, had a good night out then woke the next morning to this silence that was only broken by a spooky, whistling wind. Suddenly felt so depressed and desperate to escape. Got my stuff together jumped in my car and came back to London and have never been back since. That was a few years ago though. Maybe it’s different now.

I live very near Cribbs. It's not bad there, lot of buses, close easy access to local amenities. I feel better about Bristol than I used to. I think my upbringing coloured my feelings about it, it was a difficult childhood and adolescence, and I just wanted to get away. I did for a time, but (long story) came back. My life is happier now I'm in my own pad and away from parents. Though I understand what a PP said about the edginess, it is a restless city. There is a lot of homelessness there and the visible street homelessness is the tip of the iceberg. the city itself has a dark side but there is also a lovely arty vibe. I actually prefer Bath, as it's much mellower.

Although I know am pretty fortunate enough to live in a North Bristol /South Gloucestershire suburb which is away from the city but also close enough and on a good bus route to visit the city for a nice concert in the cathedral or a lovely stroll on the Clifton downs, I would love to either live in Cornwall, Durham or Northumberland, as I love those places. They are my happy places.

SalmonWellington · 14/11/2023 21:07

Or the Bristol hum?

There was one about Bath too, as I recall!

Stumbleine · 14/11/2023 21:08

I get this but with Durham. I want to like it...but just feels unsettling to be there.

StopEatinNutellaOutOfTheJar · 14/11/2023 21:11

I've always lived in Bristol so don't necessarily notice the gloom but the centre of town is somewhere I avoid if possible. I go every now and again if I need something from Primark 😂
As others have said I much prefer cribbs. Don't live too far from it and our little suburb is surrounded by woodland walks, big open parks and lovely little high streets/villages for shopping in. I feel very lucky to live here but I can understand it if your talking about the town centre.

I agree , I think it's because Broadmead is looking really run down . Maybe it will have a better vibe when it's re-built . I only go the town twice a year .

StopEatinNutellaOutOfTheJar · 14/11/2023 21:25

Yes, Debenham is empty and that bit by the bear pit is pretty grim.
Cabot Circus is nice enough.

I think Cribbs is easier to get to and has free parking so always my go to.

theduchessofspork · 14/11/2023 21:26

There’s no real centre.

That’s the weird thing about it, to me (was bombed(

KatyN · 14/11/2023 21:26

Bristol has a massive homeless population. I think that effects the feeling in the city centre.

Brighton is just seedy and peeling though, it is beyond me why it’s so popular.

The New Forest I find quite spooky and weird
