Something about Bristol

I've been to Bristol a couple of times to do tourist stuff in the past and have recently been a few times for work. There's something about it that gives me the heebie jeebies!

It's not like I feel unsafe or think it's grim but there's something my monkey brain doesn't like. It gives me a creeping sense of doom and I've never felt such relief to be on the M5.

I seen posts on here before about people getting squiffy at certain places. What's it all about? Any rational explanations?

I'm not woo but I'm starting to think it was the scene of my murder in a previous life!!

@Threewheeler1

Well it is definitely throbby. I've had some rather good times in Nepnett Thrubwell but that's for another thread.

Bath is so unthrobby...it's clearly all happening over your side of the valley!
😂I might have to move😁

LadyBird1973 · 15/11/2023 17:31

It feels very 'bitty' to me, like it's all over the place and no real centre. It's nicer than it used to be though.

I get that feeling about Glastonbury - it's a bit wicker man and I couldn't get out of there fast enough!

Lelophants · 15/11/2023 17:32

Everyone I know is in love with it and I don’t really get it. It’s massive, different areas with so central part but not exciting like London or beautiful like Edinburgh. Rich kids, West Country. I don’t know. Not my thing.

I don't 'get' Bristol. Most old towns/cities have a recognisable centre but Bristol just seems a disorganised blob. I can't see where the heart is.
It doesn't help that they are so anti-car; I can never find my way around, they seem to try to confuse and confound on purpose.
And we all know that the Council is so "open-minded" that its brain has fallen out.

Their pride march was a bit scary. Not inclusive and warm feeling just I’m right you’re wrong and we will kill you if you don’t say TWAW kind of vibe.

Needmoresleep · 15/11/2023 17:54

And the haze of dope fumes that float over the City. DD went to University there, and never got the love. In her view the major problem with the University was the rampant drug use.

I was seeing her off at Paddington one day and was able to spot people heading for the Bristol train from their smell.

I get anxiety about Birmingham (I've never even fecking been!). For some reason I think it's full of gangsters.

I really don’t know what it is about Birmingham but I always find it faintly depressing. There are apparently nice areas on the outskirts and my brother lived there happily for years but the town centre…not a nice vibe.

Dontcallmescarface · 15/11/2023 18:31

It's because it's awash with the undead that have been trying to get out of the city for years. Due to the abysmal road layout and signage, they are doomed to drive for all eternity around the city centre.

Not a fan of Birmingham. On the music side there is a good concert hall there a decent conservatoire but aside from that I just don't like it. It's depressing and ugly.

You've redeemed it now 😁I didn't know the Wurzels hailed from Nempnett!
I think it's because it always sounds a bit throbby, if you know what I mean...!

I've got a brand new combine harvester...

Most large city centres are like ghost towns. Bristol Broadmead is a prime example. I do like Clifton, Cotham and the Downs. I don't live there but visit family. I hated living in London and New York unless I was in the tourist areas. Loath the underground ...all of it.

I actually find modern housing developments unsettling. Masses of houses on the edge of towns next to motorways or dual carriage ways. Empty, soulless places. You get lost easily and no one seems to walk anywhere so you can't ask .
Local one to me gives me the shivers.
By the way what is the Bristol hum?

Then again, I also feel uneasy when about to take off from Tenerife airport and think about the poor people who died there.

It's a different airport now. Reina Sofia airport is the "new" one - the crash was at the old one on the north side of the island which I don't think gets used much these days.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 15/11/2023 20:00

Being even more specific, St Mary Redcliffe has always struck me as a very sinister looking building. Bristol itself is OK and I would love to live in Clifton.

HereComesYourMam · 16/11/2023 09:02

I always say that Bath has a bit of a dark underbelly that some might find surprising... 'shit hole' is a bit of a stretch though!

Clifton suspension bridge

The strange case of the Bristol hum

Bristol residents have been plagued with a mysterious low-level sound that no-one can trace.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/11/2023 18:40

Little known fact. One of the Wurzels was from Edinburgh.

newnamethanks · 16/11/2023 20:00

Edinburgh????! Wash your mouth out, we don't mention that kind of thing round here 🎶'I threw my pitchfork at your dog to keep quiet'.🎶

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/11/2023 20:41

Could it be something to do with ley lines? I've seen similar sentiments expressed about Glastonbury which is situated on a ley line.

I'm sure I've seen threads about this topic before and I'm so surprised that I had to scroll all the way to this post for anyone to mention ley lines! I know it's very woo but there really is something about that neck of the woods. I love the area and for me the vibe is a positive one, but I can see why others would find it uncomfortable.

newnamethanks · 17/11/2023 07:48

What is a ley line anyway? A distance between two points. I find it hard to attribute any significance to the idea.

blobby10 · 17/11/2023 08:49

My son wants to move to Bristol and we went down there the other weekend. I didn't get any feelings of doom - the cathedral is gorgeous - but we did struggle to find a 'nice' area in the centre although the bit near the river is lovely. he's looking at the Downs and Redland area if anyone has any tips!
