Something about Bristol

I've been to Bristol a couple of times to do tourist stuff in the past and have recently been a few times for work. There's something about it that gives me the heebie jeebies!

It's not like I feel unsafe or think it's grim but there's something my monkey brain doesn't like. It gives me a creeping sense of doom and I've never felt such relief to be on the M5.

I seen posts on here before about people getting squiffy at certain places. What's it all about? Any rational explanations?

I'm not woo but I'm starting to think it was the scene of my murder in a previous life!!

Love Bristol, but live in outskirts. Enjoy a stroll around town just for the monuments/water but the actual shopping centre in town is so run down and nasty. Like others have said there are many much nicer shopping areas like Cribbs Causeway. Many happy memories here and I absolutely love the drive into town under the bridge … when the sun is out, the Avon full of water and you spot the suspension bridge surrounded by glorious autumn colours. Breathtaking.

Eastie77Returns · 14/11/2023 21:38

I had to attend a funeral in Middlesbrough once. I couldn’t leave the town soon enough. Such a strange, run down place. It felt very oppressive.

YireosDodeAver · 14/11/2023 21:41

I love Bristol.

It's a bit badly in need of repair maintenance and tlc in places, that's all

Ittastesvile · 14/11/2023 21:46

I feel a bit like this about most of the south coast and SW (so New Forest, Bournemouth, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset....)

I think it's because I've been to those places quite a few times and 99% of the time something horrible has happened. Traffic accident, family trauma, awful weather or something. I avoid going there if possible. I prefer the N and E!

It's illogical really, there are objectively lots of lovely things to do there.

My daughter feels this way about Brighton. She went once on a school trip at about 14. Nothing bad happened, she had friends with her in the class, they went to a couple galleries and had lunch sitting on some steps. But she'll never willingly go back there! She just did not like it at all.

Agree re Bristol, but I can to post that every time I’ve visited Brighton, I’ve wanted to run from it. It has the weirdest and most dark feeling.

AdrianaLaCerva · 14/11/2023 21:56

I love Bristol. It’s Manchester that gives me bad vibes.

CharlieRummer · 14/11/2023 22:00

I lived there for about 12 years and it was amazing. Lovely food, shops, nightlife, culture, everything. There's a LOT of hipsters and moustaches there. Maybe that was triggering you. It's understandable.

TeaGinandFags · 14/11/2023 22:03

So you were murdered in your past life?

Given that Bristol was an important part of the Triangular Trade it's possible that your previous life may have been grimmer and shorter than you realise.

I hope you make up for it with many joyful years this time round.

Gnomegarden32 · 14/11/2023 22:06

I agree about Bristol and Bath - got a weird feeling in both

Guesswho88 · 14/11/2023 22:06

Interesting 🤔

Guesswho88 · 14/11/2023 22:08

I get anxiety about Birmingham (I've never even fecking been!). For some reason I think it's full of gangsters.

NecklessMumster · 14/11/2023 22:09

Nooooo! I love Bristol and chose to move there. Had to move 10 miles out after I had kids to find a decent state school, as they were hard to find at the time, but still love it.

TinklyofLaughSingleofChin · 14/11/2023 22:10

I work in Bristol and used to live there, and I agree. Don't like it at all; I feel on edge constantly whenever I'm in the city centre. Feels very oppressive. Very 'us' and 'them', all the rich people living at the top of a hill and looking down on the povs.

Don't like Bath either. Up itself and full of twats.

Used to live in Cardiff and loved it there, felt much friendlier and greener and more down-to-earth.

I have this about Brighton. Loathe the place. Such a bad energy.

Bristol I love!

theduchessofspork · 14/11/2023 21:26

There’s no real centre.

That’s the weird thing about it, to me (was bombed(

Really good point
I live in South gloucestershire so 20 minutes in to town but never go in really

Peakypolly · 14/11/2023 22:19

When you've never even been! It isn't, mostly full of students, canals and great food.
My family are from Bath and I always think it's well overrated though not particularly spooky.
The only place that gave me the shivers was Alnwick, even though it was sunny when I visited something still felt dank and worrying.

ScrummyDiva2 · 14/11/2023 22:21

Love Bristol! It's walking through Liverpool that creeped me out!

Lovemydoggie · 14/11/2023 22:23

All these comments about Bath are worrying me. Am going there in December for 2 nights to meet up with my son who lives in Bristol 😂

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/11/2023 22:27

I just dislike the accent.

Renamed · 14/11/2023 22:27

Isn’t it just the appalling town planning and constantly choked roads in Bristol city centre? Leaves you feeling trapped and frustrated and needing to get out

I don't like Broadmead, it's horrible. I like old Bristol better. What's left of it. In the 60s the council finished what the Luftwaffe started 20 years earlier, it seems. They ripped the heart out of Bristol. What they did to the Dutch House was criminal IMO. I know people needed homes (hence those hideous tower blocks in Hartcliffe area, no offence to any Hartcliffe residents) but there was no reason to yeet The Dutch House.

dumpkin · 14/11/2023 22:31

I just dislike the accent.

😆

Isn't it just a city thing? As a Londoner I find the countryside scary, particularly driving at night. Where does everyone go?!

@Eastie77Returns there is a lot of poverty around that way, (Billingham, former ICI works is pretty ugly) but some of the surrounding areas, (moors, dales, etc) are spectacular. And you aren't far from Durham and Newcastle!!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 14/11/2023 22:36

I feel like this about Lancaster.

Loved Brighton and Cambridge immediately!

WhyMeWhyNowWhyNot · 14/11/2023 22:36

@PrincessHoneysuckle ah but the blow ins in Bristol don’t have that accent 😄. I grew up in Bristol in the 80s and it felt like a massive, and very unfriendly, village. It’s changed massively since then although I’m 😳 at the idea that Southmead is one of the top places to live! 😄
