I didn’t know you could serve in the cabinet if you’re not a sitting MP? I didn’t know he was in the House of Lords and I also didn’t know that a member of the House of Lords could be a cabinet member?

I wonder what has made him want to return to government after all these years?

He’s been awarded a peerage today. It is possible for a Lord to be in cabinet and there are several examples of it. It Ted s to be an ‘oh crap!’ moment where a government is in such crisis or the country is facing such a threat that they can’t find an appropriate MP. To do this while also having to create the Lord suggests a massive lack of Tory talent in Parliament. (Johnson did it with Lord Frost).

I must be living under a rock.

so they awarded DC a peerage just so they could have him in the cabinet?

He's experienced and (compared to the rest of them) moderately sensible and well thought of. They've made worse moves

AtTheEndOfMyToothbrush · 13/11/2023 12:50

He probably hasn't made enough money yet.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/11/2023 12:53

We had Lord Carrington as Foreign Secretary in the early years of the Thatcher government. We also had Alec Douglas-Home, former PM, as Foreign Secretary in the Heath government in the early 1970s. So half a century ago.

FloofCloud · 13/11/2023 13:00

Massive mistake - he's just as scandalous- using powers to lobby people he's being paid by; fucking up the country by starting Brexit.
He's really not got a good career background prior to politics and because he knew people he got himself into politics ... bloody useless, failed.
The next thing we'll be bringing in Katie price as chancellor and zippy as health secretary

user1497207191 · 13/11/2023 13:01

Blair/Brown did it twice each:-

Lord Falconer (2003)
Baroness Amos (2003)
Lord Adonis (2009)
Lord Mandelson (2008)

Coalition govt did it once:-

Baroness Warsi (2010)

Well, the really couldn't do a worse job than the ones we've had over the past 25 years!

beeonmybonnett · 13/11/2023 13:06

maybe they will award Boris a Peerage and appoint him to the cabinet 😂

Act of desperation by Sunak. Why he thought bringing back the person who brought us Brexit, along with his other negative attributes, was a good idea I don't know.

Rosmaree · 13/11/2023 13:14

Oo this is genius! I didn’t know the PM could just ditch the current embarrassment of MPs and hire in outside experienced talent. Who would you have in your fantasy cabinet?

Here’s my main players… And if I was Sunak I would totally put this together because fuck it, he’s out of a job soon anyway, it’s time to try something different…

Deputy PM: Simon Cowell because I reckon he can get shit done

Chancellor: John Major cos he’s trustworthy and boring and that’s what you need with money. Plus he has excellent manners; no Gordon Brown style tantrums

Home Secretary: Ricky Gervais because he’s smart as fuck, has bags of integrity and wouldn’t take any shit from the police

Foreign Secretary: Tony Blair, to remind Europe that they liked us once, and because he understands the Middle East

Education: JK Rowling for her integrity and record of helping children

Justice: Harriet Harmen

Defence: William Hague

Culture: Ed Sheeran

Erm

Who would you hire?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/11/2023 13:16

Women and Children Jess Philips.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 13/11/2023 13:19

Ah this will be my deal for relations with the EU

There was also that odd appointment of Lord Alan Sugar by Brown as his enterprise tsar.

It's such a slap in the face of the electorate that not only do we get lumbered with these unelected people in government, with no accountability to MPs, but we then have to put up with them in the legislature for life.

Oblomov23 · 13/11/2023 15:26

Only just seen this. Couldn't believe it!

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2023 15:29

Foreign Secretary that brought us Brexit.

Sounds great.

If you're in the Lords you can become PM without being a sitting MP.

BethDuttonsTwin · 13/11/2023 15:33

Absolute joke. The man who foisted Brexit upon us and then ran like his arse was on fire to avoid cleaning up the mess. Can’t believe we are stuck with him again.

Much as I hate Cameron I think he's a good choice to represent us on the world stage in current times. He's already had dealings with Putin, Biden and Netanyahu and had extensive dealings with the EU.

I imagine the rest of the world are getting a bit fed up of our revolving-door of know-nothing, UKIP-lite, muppets trying to deal with serious issues.

Snippit · 13/11/2023 15:40

The man that walked away after the Brexit fuck up, what a moron!!!

To be fair, I think we all should have walked away from Boris Johnson.

TigerOnTour · 13/11/2023 15:58

Prime Ministers used to sit in the Lords in the Good Olde Days.

BenZodiazapam · 13/11/2023 16:02

350 MPs and Rishi has just told pretty much all of them they’re not good enough to be foreign secretary, and they’re worse than the man who instigated Brexit because he was running scared from the likes of Farage and that haunted pencil. This is going to go well. Might invest in a popcorn machine.
