I didn’t know you could serve in the cabinet if you’re not a sitting MP? I didn’t know he was in the House of Lords and I also didn’t know that a member of the House of Lords could be a cabinet member?

I wonder what has made him want to return to government after all these years?

I’d actually vote for this!

FiloPasty · 14/11/2023 09:57

Thought I’d tagged the poster who thought we should bring in John Major, JK Rowling & Ed Sheeran

Cameron also did it in 2015 with Baroness Altmann

This all explains why Keir isn't saying anything about how undemocratic it is to have an unelected Foreign Secretary.

I am so angry this is allowed. We have someone in this high position of power that no one has voted for.

However much we hate Conservatives or Labour (depending which side of the fence you're on) at least even if you disagreed with it, it was democratic (ish). Appointments like this of any old member of the public is disgraceful and miles away from any sort of democracy.

Labour have form for bringing in members of the Lords... Lord Falconer, Lord Peter Mandelson spring to mind! And Mandelson had been forced to resign in disgrace... twice.

VikingVolva · 15/11/2023 09:10

The last Foreign Sec from the Lords was Carrington (1980s) and it worked then.

Last ex-PM to return to government was Douglas-Home (60s as PM, 70s as Foreign Sec)

These are both well within living memory, and those who remember either/both probably don't see the Cameron appointment as unprecedented or constitutionally unsound.

IDoughnutKnow · 15/11/2023 09:13

Personally, I'm quite excited by this development. He's a nice chap. I'm rather hoping he gets a second shot at being PM.

Brexit was obviously a complete disaster, but DC's main idiocy was to assume that the British public en masse were more intelligent than they actually are.

Gove is a rotten socialist.

Many would wish we could leave the kids in a pub too and go off and enjoy ourselves in the pub next door! I'm sure you are perfect though and have never made an honest mistake in your life. Well done.

Strange appointment because his views on several areas of foreign policy are not the same as the government. Overseas aid for one.

Worst appointment is Esther McVey, apologist for the McCanns, someone who should never be anywhere near government.

Barack Obama said in his autobiography that David C liked to roll his sleeves up and take his jacket off in meetings but it was all show with the air of someone who hadn’t done a days work in his life! You could tell he didn’t rate him at all. He’s a pompous slick Willie who caused a mess and walked away Scott free,no idea why you would vote for a party with him in it.

Flyhigher · 16/11/2023 21:56

Hate him. He helped destroy our country. And ran away. Get rid.

ShadowCipher · 16/11/2023 22:17

@beeonmybonnett
he will also have various connections across the globe, and im guessing there is a specific need for him

Flyhigher · 17/11/2023 16:33

How can you get a Peerage for austerity and Brexit? 💩🤬🤯

MarvellousMonsters · 17/11/2023 17:47

Quite stunned that the person responsible for holding Brexit referendum in the first place, who lied and said he would respect the result then ran away, has been granted a Lordship and then back into government.
And this just adds to the depressing state of politics. The UK is in for a shambolic few years because neither Labour or Conservatives have any business being in control at the moment.
