If you were a feminist alternative music fan in 1989 who were you listening to?

Very random question. In about 1989 a girl in my secondary school made me two tapes to expand my taste in music. One was the Dead Kennedys and the other one was either a girl band or a band with a girl singer. I vaguely think it might have begun with a V. Does anybody have any ideas?

I've been listening to bands suggested and I think it might have been the first Fuzzbox album.
Not American and not particularly like the Pixies, I know, but it's more the vibe of it and the girls voice that I remember.

@Jellykat and @TheSmallAssassin mentioned them. Some other great bands suggested too. Thanks, everyone.

Slater Kinney? Not a 'v' or 80's. Good band though!

Is this Sleater-Kinney? I recently heard them on 6music and thought they were a new band, but see they started in 1994! Love their sound.

Yes ! I couldn't remember how to spell it. They're great. Their lead singer has written a book, called 'Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl'. Her name is Jane Brownstein. Would recommend
