If you were a feminist alternative music fan in 1989 who were you listening to?

Very random question. In about 1989 a girl in my secondary school made me two tapes to expand my taste in music. One was the Dead Kennedys and the other one was either a girl band or a band with a girl singer. I vaguely think it might have begun with a V. Does anybody have any ideas?

Fuzzbox? They were around that time and were upbeat

Edited - but they weren't American and not like The Pixies.

KriceRispies · 12/11/2023 23:14

Try listening to a few John Peel playlists of that era on YouTube and you might work it out OP. A lot of these suggestions are 90s though I am also going to suggest voice of the beehive if it was upbeat.

Delicious Monster were great, should’ve been bigger!

I don't think it was any of these but thanks for all the suggestions. Wendy James was the epitome of cool, wasn't she?
To be honest the album could have been from the early 80s. Music wasn't easy to come by in rural Ireland back then. The only thing I'm sure about is that it was a female singer.

My claim to fame is my boyfriend shagged Wendy James. When he was going out with me so not actually a very good boyfriend. I was weirdly chuffed as she was actually cool.
