If you were a feminist alternative music fan in 1989 who were you listening to?

Very random question. In about 1989 a girl in my secondary school made me two tapes to expand my taste in music. One was the Dead Kennedys and the other one was either a girl band or a band with a girl singer. I vaguely think it might have begun with a V. Does anybody have any ideas?

Or the March Violets?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2023 20:42

Voice of the Beehive?
Sonic Youth?
Throwing Muses?

Oh, wish someone would make playlist of all these 😍

ConstantlyCooking · 12/11/2023 21:00

Danielle Dax? Or completely left field: Danish group called Maquis de Sade

BrandyandGinger · 12/11/2023 21:00

I don't think it was any of these but thanks for all the suggestions. Wendy James was the epitome of cool, wasn't she?
To be honest the album could have been from the early 80s. Music wasn't easy to come by in rural Ireland back then. The only thing I'm sure about is that it was a female singer.

Veruca Salt?

Mumteedum · 12/11/2023 21:16

My Bloody Valentine?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2023 21:22

Can you remember any of the lyrics?

Imnotswallowingthat · 12/11/2023 21:22

Vice Squad (Beki Bondage)

BrandyandGinger · 12/11/2023 21:33

No, sorry, I can't think of lyrics. I'm pretty sure it was American and it was upbeat. Not unlike the Pixies.

Breeders had the girl from Pixies in.
Belly?

HippyChickMama · 12/11/2023 22:08

@BrandyandGinger do either of these sound like it?

I was about to post 'Seether' but you beat me to it! Thanks!

Great thread! I am doing nostalgic, slightly-misremembered-lyrics singing.

DH made me a mixtape of the Slits, the Breeders, the Primitives when we first met. He’s still in love with Kim Deal.

MissMarplesNiece · 12/11/2023 22:17

@AutumnCrow are you thinking of Vi Subversa who was in Poison Girls? I loved them.

rubydoobydoo · 12/11/2023 22:22

The Divinyls?

HippyChickMama · 12/11/2023 22:24

I've just realised OP said 1989 so too early for Veruca Salt.
The Go-gos?

JaneJeffer · 12/11/2023 22:27

In Tua Nua?

Tawlk · 12/11/2023 22:29

My bloody valentine?

Tawlk · 12/11/2023 22:31

Dead can dance

Alonglongway · 12/11/2023 22:32

The Au Pairs? Lesley Wood was the singer.

selfishjeanss · 12/11/2023 22:33

Not seen Darling Buds, Flatmates, 10,000 Maniacs or Rhythm Sisters mentioned yet. Not sure any of them are T.V vibe.. but The Rhythm Sisters did have a song called American Boys

selfishjeanss · 12/11/2023 22:35
