If you were a feminist alternative music fan in 1989 who were you listening to?

Very random question. In about 1989 a girl in my secondary school made me two tapes to expand my taste in music. One was the Dead Kennedys and the other one was either a girl band or a band with a girl singer. I vaguely think it might have begun with a V. Does anybody have any ideas?

🤔 1989

Edited

L7’s first album was released in 1988, Babes in Toyland had their first single out in 1989, and were getting airplay. Sonic Youth definitely active then. Think those are the most Pixies and Hole-like bands mentioned so far.

Neneh Cherry, the Passions etc were great but sound nothing like the Pixies.

Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, Garbage, Breeders etc all sound right but all date from the 1990s.

I’m so invested in this, I’m praying you find out and that it’s someone I haven’t heard of. I feel it’s going to be amazing and I’m going to find a new band 🙏 please let us know if it comes to you!

I'll definitely come back to the thread if I remember, but I think it's just gone.
I hope everyone enjoyed listening to music from that era.

It could have been a pretty niche band. I started college in the very early 90s and was friendly with some mega Pixies fans, but I never heard of the band on the tape again. Bossanova is an album that really reminds me of being a student.

Goodbye Mr McKenzie (Scottish band with Shirley Manson - later of Garbage fame)

Comefromaway · 13/11/2023 16:15

Transvision Vamp was the first ever concert I went to. Wendy James is a goddess.

@AutumnCrow are you thinking of Vi Subversa who was in Poison Girls? I loved them.

Yes! I'm mixing up my Slits and Poison Girls, as you do after a snifter ...

MissMarplesNiece · 13/11/2023 16:28

@AutumnCrow I loved the Slits too, but sadly never got to see them live.

Kingdomoffife · 13/11/2023 16:48

Virginia Astley? Not very Transvision Vamp like, but from that era and only really known about in indie music circles.

OccupantofInterplanetaryCraft · 13/11/2023 16:55

Voodoo dolls? All male but I wonder if they did a song with a guest female singer?

OccupantofInterplanetaryCraft · 13/11/2023 16:56

Also there must be a band called The Vixens, such a good name

i can’t believe people have mentioned Fuzzbox. The original Spice Girls - they were so fun

TotalOverhaul · 13/11/2023 17:02

The Slits, The Breeders, Belly (bit later), Sweet Honey in the Rock (softer sound but good feminist lyrics)

Minesnotahighhorse · 15/11/2023 19:05

Has no one mentioned The Vaselines? Scottish band and one of Kurt Cobain's favourites (his daughter Frances was named after the lead singer).

Norma27 · 15/11/2023 19:11

Fuzzbox?

ProfYaffle · 15/11/2023 19:15

Great thread! I am doing nostalgic, slightly-misremembered-lyrics singing.

DH made me a mixtape of the Slits, the Breeders, the Primitives when we first met. He’s still in love with Kim Deal.

Surely we’re ALL still in love with Kim Deal?
