If you don't like tattoos

Can you say why?

I'm fed up of people who think those with tattoos are rough arsed bikers, thick or common.

Why am I not surprised most on here don't like them. Funny how most people in real life have them even if its just one or two

'Most people' don't have one - it's estimated that about 20% of the UK population have a tattoo overall, with higher percentages in younger age groups.

They will fall out of fashion, as everything does eventually, when the younger population becomes the middle-aged population and the new younger generation sees tattoos as the mark of an older person.

RhianMor · 13/11/2023 07:23

I don't judge people that have them but I choose not to have one myself because most people have got shit tattoos. Not subjectively but done by a shit "artist". The ones that look good eventually look shit.

I think of all the millions of people I've seen with tattoo there's been 2 that I've seen that I think...OK thats great artwork.. ..someone talented has done that. One of them I struck up a conversation with and he told me he had flown to San Francisco paid a huge sum and had to wait 2 years for the appointment- definitely you could tell it was a different level of tattoo than someone who trotted off down thier local High Street one afternoon - the latter I tend to just not notice because there's nothing special to see.

CurlewKate · 13/11/2023 08:33

Do most people have tattoos? I'm surprised. I suppose it depends on age- certainly most of my women friends don't. A few more men-and men in my mother's generation, who were adults in the 1940s,did. However, far more in my children's generation do. I think tattoo artists have got much better over the years. I'm still not keen on permanent cosmetic body modification, though.

It's not correct to say that most people in the UK have a tattoo. But I can imagine it's true that for some people, out of the people they know, it's more common than not.

bippityboppity87 · 13/11/2023 13:38

I have a tattoo. It was either that, or have my unsightly self harm scars on show (which were very obvious) put me off wearing t shirts and going swimming. I was very poorly at the time, I have bipolar, adhd and autism. If people think I look "common" well that says more about them than myself. I don't see anything wrong with them. It's a very outdated view that they're seen that way. I know plenty of people with tattoos from all walks of life. I draw the line at face, neck and hand tattoos though

Terracotta77 · 13/11/2023 13:43

They just make me wonder what trauma you’ve experienced and I feel a bit sorry for that person as there is clearly something unresolved.

marshmallowfinder · 13/11/2023 13:53

Because they have messed up your skin with an awful image. They all end up navy blue and smudged in the end and look even worse. Clear, clean skin is just gorgeous. Tattoos are hideous.

Neitheronethingnortheother · 13/11/2023 13:59

Before this thread I had very little opinions on people who have tattoos

After this thread I have more opinions on people who don't have tattoos

Assuming those with tattoos have trauma, unresolved issues, are doing it for attention, are sheep etc with the extra judgement on women for not providing enough "pretty" for people to look at

I totally get those that prefer a more natural look, I don't like lip fillers or body builders because I prefer a more natural look. Or those who don't like them aesthetically, I like graffiti etc but I understand why plenty don't so I get the aesthetic bit

But the judgements about class, money and people's mental health? Yeah that I now am judgemental about I guess

Terracotta77 · 13/11/2023 14:01

Assuming those with tattoos have trauma,

There is research to this effect, though.

Only thing I have unresolved is which design to go for next and where 😬 been mulling it over for 4 months and still can't decide.

AddictedToBooks · 13/11/2023 14:06

Some people like me, have a baby name tattooed because we are a grieving parent - I'm 46 and got beaten up whilst pregnant when I was 21 - I then had to give birth to a dead child who I had wanted with all of my being.
I finally got her name tattooed on my inner arm where it can be hidden by a sleeve - part of me getting it was because I always felt it was my fault she died because I didn't protect her enough, so I "deserved" the pain of the tattoo - but you know what, it's actually certain judgements that hurt even more!

Can anyone honestly say that David Beckham hasnt ruined his look, but getting all inked up like that. He looks dreadful and now his sons are following suit? Sad.

Flapjacker48 · 13/11/2023 14:30

Tattoos DO make people look common and rough.

I actually know someone who was was frightened when she was a child of people having tattoos, she thought it meant there was something wrong with them?
People look much better without.

Poor kid. I know someone with a fear of bananas 🤣 people can have some strange unfounded fears.

It's interesting that when he's advertising something a lot of them get airbrushed out. I knew he had tattoos but it wasn't until I saw an unbrushed pap shot I saw how many he had and how awful they were. He's basically turning blue!

mydogisthebest · 13/11/2023 14:48

I think they look really ugly. Some like ones on legs on massive sleeves actually make me feel physically sick.

Obviously lots of people like them but I would think many regret having them, especially as they get older.

One thing I never understand is why people have them in places where they can't see them like on their back

What rubbish. Of course most people don't have tattoos.

SeasonalBlue · 13/11/2023 15:58

To me it's like having to wear the same outfit every day for the rest of your life; you're not a blank canvas anymore.

SeasonalBlue · 13/11/2023 15:59

Also, the kind of tattoo I'd have had in my 20's really wouldn't make me feel good now. In the same way my fashion sense has moved on... tastes change. I wouldn't want to be stuck with it.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 13/11/2023 16:05

Tattoos are now commonplace in some circles.

They're also "common" ime.

To me, they're like permanent contouring make-up. They're the thing du jour, and will age badly as all trends do. Western tattoos are a trend; there's no cultural heritage behind them.

I feel about people with tattoos as I feel about people wearing make-up that takes more than 2 minutes a day to put on and take off: crippling lack of self-confidence in their appearance, and/or too much vanity.

I’ve got a friend who’s got a small heart at top of her back. Can’t see it unless she wears halter neck, backless or low back tops.

A friend has a huge tattoo design around her lower rib/back area, you can probably only see that in lingerie and bikinis.

Male friend has similar tattoo to above - lower rib/back can see in underwear/beach wear but not otherwise.

I think with all 3 above. It’s more for them. They know they have these tattoos which they wanted, the man for work, it looks better if his isn’t visible. It seems to be a big “I’ve got a tattoo” status but not daring enough that it’s noticeably visible.

Yep, my makeup takes me about 30 mins to do because I look like a dropped pie without it on. Total catfish 🤣 isn't that why someone who only takes 2 mins to put makeup on still wears it? So they feel a bit better about how they look?

@Raincloudsonasunnyday - my makeup takes me roughly 5-10 minutes to put on, less to take off. When I was younger and could get away with no makeup then of course I didn’t wear it, or minimal. Most women I know of my age either do or don’t wear it on a daily basis (weekends and holidays I generally go without). I definitely don’t have a crippling lack of self confidence in my appearance nor too much vanity. I simply wear it for me and I think I look better and more “me” with it on.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 13/11/2023 16:27

Megifer... 'a dropped pie'? Shock I'm sure you don't look anything like that at any time, but that description made me laugh so much. Grin
