If Corbyn had won....

....how would the country look now?

There would be at least 20,000 more people alive, as indeed would be the case if Jeremy Hunt or Michael Gove had become Prime Minister, or Theresa May remained in power.

For any of them, restrictions (so-called lockdown) would have come in at least a week or more earlier in March 2020.

LakeTiticaca · 12/11/2023 14:31

Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it

Teentaxidriver · 12/11/2023 14:35

Is that you, Jeremy? Two replies in an hour. Almost as much interest in you now as there was in 2019.

lightinthebox · 12/11/2023 14:38

Schools, NHS and mental health services would be getting their funding and our children wouldn’t be paying the price of adults voting Tory.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/11/2023 14:39

Who knows?
The Tories won as Labour was even more of a mess. I'm not convinced they would have handled the situation any better (and no I didn't vote for the Tories!!!)

Both parties were a complete let down.

CurlewKate · 12/11/2023 18:29

@Teentaxidriver "Is that you, Jeremy? Two replies in an hour. Almost as much interest in you now as there was in 2019."

🤣I thought it would be an interesting thought experiment. Obviously not!

Summerhillsquare · 12/11/2023 18:36

Markedly fairer.

But hey, property prices might not have risen 🤷

HermioneWeasley · 12/11/2023 18:43

He’d be having tea with his friends from Hamas.

TeenLifeMum · 12/11/2023 18:46

Wasn’t he a covid denier? Or was that only his brother? I don’t think we’d have had lock down at all. I think the economy would be worse than it is now just sooner. Not a Boris supporter but also certainly not a Corbyn fan.

NuffSaidSam · 12/11/2023 18:49

I don't think things would have been any better, but maybe bad in a different way.

I wonder if things would have been better had Teresa May clung on though. She always seemed slightly more competent than Boris or Jez or Rishi.

MsBea · 12/11/2023 18:54

I expect my father would be alive, if Corbyn had won.
The world would be a far better place.

LaChienneDesFromages · 12/11/2023 19:03

The nation’s government would still be a bit batshit. Just a different (anti-Semitic) shade of batshit.

Oh, David Milliband, how we yearn for the outward looking, economically and socially liberal, social democracy that might have been.

CurlewKate · 12/11/2023 19:06

@LaChienneDesFromages Davis Milliband-the best prime minister we never had. As they say.

The Covid handling would’ve been better. Medics would have had access to the correct PPE, not the stuff from the Tory donator corrupt suppliers who got it all wrong back in 2020. Corbyn would have cared about loss of life, over the last couple of weeks we know exactly what Boris Johnson’s attitude was with ‘Covid is nature’s way of dealing with old people’. The Tories utterly failed in protecting the elderly, those poor people being infected in care homes was absolutely unforgivable. What a way of a long life ending, it was tragic.

Corbyn is principled and isn’t corrupt. The absolute opposite to Boris Johnson, who I’m sickened by. I fail to see how he’d have done a worse job.

HermioneWeasley · 12/11/2023 18:43

He’d be having tea with his friends from Hamas.

That’d be an issue

CurlewKate · 12/11/2023 19:39

Wow- I didn't think anyone would post anything delete-worthy! Curious now.....

Doseofreality · 12/11/2023 19:41

It would be a beautiful place.

EasternStandard · 12/11/2023 19:42

Intriguing that was deleted

He used that phrasing

MsBea · 12/11/2023 19:46

I wish Bernie Sanders had gotten in across the pond too. Sadly, the system is corrupt, and good people get sabotaged.

Hibambinos · 12/11/2023 19:47

His closest ally was Diane Abbott ….just saying …

lightinthebox · 12/11/2023 19:49

Unfortunately Corbyn just shows how easily people are manipulated by the media and scare tactics, as much as they’d argue otherwise.

Just look at what they have to lose if someone like Corbyn got into power, no wonder they attacked him so mercilessly.

Our children wouldn’t be in unsafe and under funded schools that’s for sure.

Namechangeagain2023 · 12/11/2023 19:51

I absolutely dread to think.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 12/11/2023 20:07

It's easy to project anything you want on Corbyn because he's such a blank slate. Wishful thinking and pipe dreams.

He couldn't have have any more success than the incumbents at getting PPE. The whole world was scrambling for it and that's why so much was substandard (not just ours) and not through malice, because factories were desperately trying to meet the exponentially increased demand. His covid handling would probably have been far less successful because he's a prevaricator, he'd have taken far longer to agree to lockdown than even Johnson did. On top of this he would have been unlikely to agree to the vaccine programme when he got round to listening to his advisers. But possibly most importantly he would never have appointed Kate Bingham who was responsible for just about every positive UK pandemic outcome. Oh, and based on his welfare plans the generous financial help was unlikely to have happened.

It's silly to say there wouldn't be any crumbling schools either. Corbyn was also in a government that knew about the WRAC problem but did nothing. Even with the best of intentions he's not a time traveller and couldn't stop them being built. In all fairness there's been a lot going on over the last few years, it would have had to be on the back burner with him too.
