How much do you care about your appearance?

Like do you have a skincare routine? Pluck your eyebrows? Style your hair?

I think I’m medium. Sometimes I don’t bother doing anything with my hair and I’ll go weeks without doing my eyebrows. My nails are clean and short - whereas my friend gets hers done every 2 weeks.

I tend to go for a fairly natural look, and use a BB cream, blusher, sometimes eyeliner and highlighter and always eyebrow pencil. I dye my eyelashes and brows myself every 3 or 4 weeks, and get my brows threaded when I can get somewhere that does that at a reasonable price. I sometimes wear nail polish that I apply myself, but never leave it on chipped. I have a very basic cleansing and moisturising routine, avoid sun on my face and have never had a facial or other treatment.
I'm early 60's, my skin is great, as is my Mum's.. she only ever uses Oil of Olay, so I guess it's genetic. I got my make up routine from my granny, I shared a bedroom with her on holiday one year and watched the transformation from tired older lady to glowing and glamorous. It's the blusher and eyebrows that make the difference!

That’s not a natural look. That’s bloody loads of faff!
Fine to do all that if it’s what you like obviously, but don5 pretend it’s low maintenance. I’m 59 and also have great skin. I don’t look ‘tired old lady’ mainly because I’m none of that.
I haven’t worn makeup for almost a decade and when I did I thought I’d done loads and it was just your ‘natural’ stuff. I have my eyebrows done whenever they look appalling and have a pedicure about every month in spring/summer. I use facetheory facial wash and need nothing else to keep my skin hydrated and happy.
My clothes are clean, comfortable and (when I’m going out) stylish in a bit of an alternative way.
I have my hair cut about every 5 weeks at around £30 a go, but it’s short so needs that for tidiness plus is low maintenance the rest of the time.

So you don’t do anything with your brows?

Its crazy how much they change your face and make you look more polished when just plucked.

You see, I’d personally disagree fundamentally. I personally think that most groomed brows make people look like they prioritise looks over what they are and that’s fundamentally not what I’m after…so no, no groomed brows here.

Gnomegnomegnome · 12/11/2023 15:03

I wouldn’t say that I cared much about my appearance but I do look after my skin, regular hair cuts/treatments, keep nails nice, wear some makeup, enjoy nice clothes etc.

But for me it’s about self care rather than appearance though. It makes me feel good.

I also work out, eat well, meditate etc.

I care about my appearance but a lot less than many, I think. My skincare routine consists of moisturiser after a shower. Sometimes my heart sinks a little when I see signs of ageing but mostly I feel this is normal, I am getting older, I accept it. Wouldn’t dream of any surgical or harsh interventions. I’d hate to be on my deathbed thinking I spent a lot of time in my life thinking about how I look, I want to be glad that my focus has been improving myself as a person, becoming more loving, kind and patient etc.

Beezknees · 12/11/2023 15:08

I do look after my eyebrows as I think they really do frame the face. Don't have a fancy skincare routine, just cleanse and moisturise. I colour my hair but I do it from a box at home and just trim the ends myself as my hair is very fine so there's not much styling that can be done. Usually just wear it in a ponytail for work and I'll straighten it and wear it down if I'm going out in the evening.

Make-up wise I wear foundation, concealer and mascara if I'm going out. I have rosacea so I dislike my natural skin.

I paint my nails occasionally but it chips quickly so I don't often bother!

I'm 33 so haven't felt the need for cosmetic surgery yet. I have full lips so never considered lip filler or anything. I wouldn't be against botox though at some point.

Clothes wise I have sort of a "soft grunge" style, in winter I like oversized jumpers and dark jeans, dresses and patterned tights with doc martens, in the summer maxi dresses and chunky sandals. I never wear high heels. I'm not customer facing and there is no dress code for my job so no need for smart clothes thankfully as I hate wearing that kind of thing.

SaltyGod · 12/11/2023 15:11

I probably care more than I should, and if I feel that I look bad it does impact my mood.

I have my lashes done, which has a huge impact.

I sometimes have my nails done with gel polish.

I pluck my own eyebrows

I wear light makeup every day (BB cream or foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eye brown pencil, coloured lip gloss)

I wash and style my hair daily or every two days. Luckily I don’t yet have to dye it, but will when I get too many greys.

I take pleasure in wearing nice clothes and shopping.

All in all I’d say I was fairly vain 😔. Which I’m pretty ashamed of, but I’m not sure I’ll ever change.

countdowntonap · 12/11/2023 15:38

Yes but mainly from the inside out. My goal is to look healthy and glowing.

I prioritise sleep, drink lots of water, eat mainly nutrient dense food - even at weekends. Lots of activity like weightlifting, walking and gym classes. I feel like unless I look slim with bright clear skin, it doesn’t matter what colour my nails are.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/11/2023 16:04

That’s not a natural look. That’s bloody loads of faff!
Huh? It takes about a minute to put on my makeup on the days I do put it on. I'm not pretending it's low maintenance, it is low maintenance!
I don't go for pedicures, or frequent haircuts, or even named face products. You have your eyebrows done, cardibach, what is it you think I'm doing that is so much faff?

Heatherbell1978 · 12/11/2023 16:14

Very little. I used to care a lot more but post kids (now 6 and 9), it's gone downhill. I do wear make up but minimal. I pencil in my eyebrows and wear mascara as a minimum. I get no treatments (nails, eyebrows, face etc) as it feels like a waste of money unless it's a massage where I can feel the benefit.

Over the years I've tried every beauty product I think (nothing too high end) and think I've found the perfect one for me with a Beauty Pie serum and Aldi or Lidl Q10 cream.

goldengirlx · 12/11/2023 14:57

Oh and i have a laser hair removal machine which was my biggest game changer!

Which one? I’d maybe like to invest and potentially there might be a good deal for Black Friday.

dontforgettofloss · 12/11/2023 16:31

Not at all anymore sadly, on a good day I'll wash and brush my hair and shave my legs, that's it, I don't bother with makeup anymore, I wear leggings every day.
I stopped caring what I looked like a long time ago, I always think, 'no one's looking at me anyway'

BatshitCrazyWoman · 12/11/2023 16:34

I'd say medium. I paint my own nails and do my own eyebrows (I've got a thyroid disorder which has affected them), use cleanser, eye cream and moisturiser. I wear light make up every day. Hairdresser for cut and highlights every 6 to 8 weeks

I love having facials, I just don't have time! I've got long dark eyelashes (despite being fair) so just mascara works for them, and my nails are good, so I've not seen the need to have professional input.

bryceQ · 12/11/2023 16:36

I care about what I eat and drink and my skin. I look after those.

My eye brows are a pretty decent shape and don't need anything.

I wear very minimal if any makeup. I'm lucky to have easy skin

MyCreakyKnees · 12/11/2023 16:37

I shower daily and wear clean clothes.
I wash my hair every three days as it's waist length and thick, it either gets plaited or tied back in a ponytail.
I don't wear any make up and my fringe covers my eyebrows so I don't do anything with them.
I go to the hairdresser once every couple of months for my fringe and ends trimming to prevent splitting.
I cut my own nails and never wear nail polish.
So pretty low maintenance I think.

LlynTegid · 12/11/2023 16:39

I care probably most about what I wear. Never have leggings, shoes not trainers for work and certain other things (for example the war memorial this morning).

Daily shower in the morning, no slobbing around in pyjamas either.

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/11/2023 16:41

I’m 52. Only professional care is 8 weekly hair foils and cut. Otherwise it’s skincare morning and night, daily makeup. I paint my nails occasionally but toenails are always painted but don’t need redoing often. Pluck rogue brows but not much anymore as post 50 they do t seem to grow and have migrated to my chin so I stay on top of those now!! I wax my bikini line myself and that’s it.

Pippim · 12/11/2023 16:43

Very little.
I don't think I was ever vain when young but I had youth and good looks.
Now I remember to brush my hair most days. I wear a little makeup if going out in the evening, so maybe once a month.
I lost my eyebrows a few years ago when I had breast cancer and they grew back very sparsely but tidy so I've never touched them since.
I hate fake or whatever those long nails are.
Never had much body hair so never shave.
Skincare - I use nivea everywhere, very dry skin.

Squirrelsnut · 12/11/2023 16:44

I'm medium I think. I wear light makeup on workdays and my hair is clean and shiny. I use Skin and Me stuff and sunscreen. I take biotin and marine collagen (just started). I'm not very interested in clothes but I have some nice items for work.
For me, it's about a balance between confidence and being natural.

Lovelynames123 · 12/11/2023 16:46

I care from the point that I pluck the stray hair from the microbladed broms, plus chin hairs! My leg hair is barely there after lumea treatment years ago, I work in a kitchen so nails short, hair tied up and bb cream plus mascara. But if I'm going out out I like to do make up properly, curl my hair etc

Basically day to day very low maintenance, wash and moisturise and tidy hair, out, much more effort, and always have toenails gelled but do it myself

theleafandnotthetree · 12/11/2023 16:46

goldengirlx · 12/11/2023 14:57

Oh and i have a laser hair removal machine which was my biggest game changer!

Which one do you have? Am giving serious thought to this as my facial hair is just out of control (hormonal I think) and there are other areas I'd like to tackle for the first time (underarms) or top up previous treatments in the salon. Legs and bikini line were very successful but that was years ago now so they need a bit of a refresh..

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 12/11/2023 16:47

Never pluck my eyebrows unless I get an errant hair. My brows are naturally neat and tidy, if anything I wish I had more brow as they're quite thin.

Nails I keep short as I do martial arts several times a week and need to be able to make a tight fist.

Hair washed 3 times a week, and a box dye bi-monthly.

Skin care is a good serum and moisturiser routine, nothing expensive though. Make up I only wear when I go to the office and its pretty basic stuff.

Wendyspotatopeeler · 12/11/2023 16:49

The older I get, I have started to spend more time and money on beauty. I go to the hairdressers every 3 weeks to sort my roots out. I have my lashes curled and brows done every 8 weeks. I've found a fab nail lady, I go every 3 weeks. I get a Hollywood wax every 7 weeks. I had my first botox this year but don't intend to get more for at least 12 months after.

I do style my hair every time I wash it and have started with a light make up routine every day except Sundays. Wear perfume every day. Full skincare routine every night.

ThreeRingCircus · 12/11/2023 16:50

I would say I'm medium-maintenance. I focus on being clean and presentable but primarily comfortable.

I get my hair keratin straightened every six months and cut at the same time (it's long so I just have a few inches cut off and a tidy up at these twice-yearly appointments.) Otherwise it's a frizzy mess and the keratin treatment means I can just blow dry my hair and it's smooth. I don't straighten it or colour it (trying to embrace going grey.)

My eyebrows are microbladed because my natural brows are almost non- existent.

I get a pedicure every six weeks during the summer months when I'm wearing sandals as I like my toenails to look nice when they're on show! I don't do anything with my fingernails other than keep them short and clean....no polish.

Skincare is face washed every day with cleanser and a flannel. Serum in the morning and a moisturiser at night. Just basic ones, nothing expensive.

After every shower or bath I moisturise my skin with coconut oil (but literally just whack it on, it takes 60 seconds.)

Makeup is minimal. Tinted moisturiser, mascara and lip balm.

I wear perfume every day.

Clothes are functional. Lots of leggings, jumpers and boots or jeans and a fleece top. I mainly work from home and office is reasonably casual when I do go in.

The only thing I potentially will change is I think I may need to wear more makeup once my hair goes more grey to save looking washed out.

madascheesney · 12/11/2023 16:59

@goldengirlx
Which hair removal machine, am also thinking about this?

ItWasntMyFault · 12/11/2023 17:06

I'm pretty low maintenance - my hair is cut every 6-7 weeks but I've never dyed it and it's in an easy to manage bob.

I do pluck my eye brows but I've never had them professionally done and my nails are clean and nicely shaped but I do that myself and I've never had them professionally painted and have never had false nails.

I wouldn't dream of leaving the house without having a shower, drying my hair and putting on very light makeup but that's only because I'm so pale I look ill if I don't wear any.

I've never worn false eyelashes and have never had a fake tan. I've also not got any tattoos.
