Does knowing "25 people have bought this item / are looking at this item" persuade you to buy it?

Looking at a kitchen cabinet. Seems that 25 people have bought this.

So...it doesn't say when they got it? In the last hour? Last week.
Same with looking at. So what. Are they looking at it now? Recently.

I know it's supposed to be nudge theory, to try to think it's popular, you need to get it before it sells out etc but does it really work?

It doesn’t work on me as I don’t believe that info is real

Comefromaway · 11/11/2023 10:24

It has no effect whatsoever

TogetherWeLearn · 11/11/2023 10:24

Agree it’s annoying especially on holiday websites.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2023 10:25

annoying pop ups actively put me off.

Timeandtune · 11/11/2023 10:25

Me neither. I might be interested if I know someone IRL has bought something but not via a website.

TheBeesKnee · 11/11/2023 10:28

No because I assume they're lying lol

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 11/11/2023 10:28

I ignore as I know it's meant to pressurise me into buying because it's so 'popular.'

HellonHeels · 11/11/2023 10:28

No it doesn't. I feel irritated with pop up messages covering the detail on screen that I'm trying to look at. It often makes me shut down the window and huff off.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 11/11/2023 10:28

No. All I want is the product details & the option to look at reviews. All the bollocks about the number of other people interested or what other people bought to go with this product is irrelevant clutter.

caringcarer · 11/11/2023 10:44

No difference to me.

cakeorwine · 11/11/2023 13:46

The holiday ones are the worst. 50 people are looking at this. But what dates?

And as they have limited availability, I am sure some people are persuaded to buy.

This actively puts me off stuff - I had a thread about this before, it's very annoying.
Especially when it pops up all over the site and you can't get rid of it.

ScottBakula · 11/11/2023 14:04

It doesn't affect my choice one way or the other but I agree with pp that say its annoying.

I often wonder if the shop / manufacture/ site owner/ estate agent starts getting excited when they suddenly lots of hits .

Little do they know it's because someone has posted a link on MN generally poking fun at the price / colour / fit / decor 😁

Totaly · 11/11/2023 14:10

I’m less likely to buy a popular item.

Pit something in a basket and a couple of days later you get a discount code!

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 11/11/2023 15:06

It's all a marketing ploy. Do they think we're stupid?

"This item is in six people's baskets, only two left in stock." Nah, load of crap.

"Customers who bought this also bought these (frequently unrelated ) items." Well, how lovely for them. Not sure what I am expected to do with that information.

If a site annoys me too much I just don't buy the product. If I do buy an item and they hassle me for reviews or send endless emails with "offers" I don't use them again.

EscapeTheCastle · 11/11/2023 16:24

If I'm looking at say a Jumper and it pops up "12 other people are looking at this right now" I don't want to buy it anymore as my taste doesn't feel personal to me anymore and I imagine 12 other people crowded around me reaching for the jumper in a crushed retail store. 😃 I feel rushed and pissed off.

MintJulia · 11/11/2023 16:24

no, not in the slightest.

Traceyislivid · 11/11/2023 16:25

No. Actually sometimes puts me off the item.

AbbeyGailsParty · 11/11/2023 16:25

No

RandomNutter · 11/11/2023 16:28

Hate those pop ups. And it completely puts me off. I don't want something everyone else has bought, and I can't see the product because of the stupid notices.
Usually, I just close the browser.

HardcoreLadyType · 11/11/2023 16:29

If 47 people are looking at this item right now, how do I know how many are in stock? It’s just meaningless.

And on Etsy, where you are looking at a vintage item, well of course there’s only one in stock - there may well only be one in existence!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/11/2023 16:32

No. I assume it is bots or whatever the techy term is for marketing hype online. Same with a lot of the reviews - I’ll read them but also be quite sceptical of 50 of 5 star reviews and nothing else - no one/thing is that good?!

RudsyFarmer · 11/11/2023 16:34

It might work if I really wanted something popular and thought it might sell out. For most things it puts me off.

GrandHighPoohbah · 11/11/2023 16:39

I hate this, especially if the pop up box covers the photo of what I'm looking at. For some of the big shops, it's not even that popular. John Lewis and M&S are guilty of this "10 bought in the last 24 hours" really isn't a lot when you have several million customers is it?!

Jojoanna · 11/11/2023 18:19

Nope
