Does knowing "25 people have bought this item / are looking at this item" persuade you to buy it?

Looking at a kitchen cabinet. Seems that 25 people have bought this.

So...it doesn't say when they got it? In the last hour? Last week.
Same with looking at. So what. Are they looking at it now? Recently.

I know it's supposed to be nudge theory, to try to think it's popular, you need to get it before it sells out etc but does it really work?

I hate this, and the pop up window telling you the "other people" info usually blocks or slows my viewing experience down. Hate it. So annoying and deters me from buying because it wants to pressure me into buying.

I was coming to say this. Marketers are not stupid, if sales were static or people actually avoided products with it they would not do it.
i sometimes use the other people who bought this if what i was buying is part of a present and I think it would compliment that.
