Vegetarian chinese order

If you're a vegetarian, what do you order when you get a Chinese takeaway? I used to love Chinese but not eaten it much since turning vegetarian 8 years ago. I miss it though but never sure what to order so I'm looking for some inspiration as we are going to get a takeaway tonight

I'm not veggie but like veggie food! Our Chinese does amazing salt and pepper tofu . It's amazing. I have it with boiled rice and a pot of curry.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/11/2023 13:14

DP orders mini veg spring rolls, veg chow mein, will have some rice and curry sauce, chips (we're heathens I know), crispy cabbage or one of the tofu dishes.

I'm not veggie but we often share, the dishes really aren't much different with meat in them and taste exactly the same to me - just with some meat added at the end.

ButterMyParsnip · 10/11/2023 13:24

I always have tofu in black bean sauce, a veggie chow mein and egg fried rice.

I usually get vegetarian wonton soup, vegetarian egg rolls, eggplant with spicy garlic sauce or salt and pepper tofu.

Oh man, all the choices around sound amazing 🤤

IHeartGeneHunt · 10/11/2023 17:22

Oh I forgot pineapple fritters! One place near ish to me does sweet potato fritters and they're delicious

Silkiefloof · 10/11/2023 17:35

Just to add as you can never have too much Chinese love pineapple and banana fritters and toffee apple ones. Love water chesnuts and cashew nuts.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 10/11/2023 17:37

I was veggie for years and my favourites were satay tofu and salted chilli chips, I also loved mushroom chow mein, veg spring rolls and vegeable fried rice.

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 10/11/2023 17:40

I still eat fish, so something with prawns - tonight it’s king prawn and sweetcorn with fried rice. And prawn toast.

So, not a vegetarian nor a vegetarian choice at a Chinese restaurant....

@MissFizzyPop town beginning with W? Mine too :)

Daisychainsandglitter · 10/11/2023 18:04

Tofu in black bean sauce, plain chowmein, mini vegetable spring rolls. Yum!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/11/2023 18:43

I'm veggie and I've given up on Chinese. None near me do tofu.

Much prefer a curry.

Switchingoff · 10/11/2023 18:49

Spring roll
crispy seaweed (check no scallop garnish)
veggie hot and sour soup
Fried beancurd with peppercorn salt
crispy asparagus

Vegetable lettuce wrap (or mock duck)

noodles and a veg main or two eg stir fried green beans or mixed veg

🤤

Ghostofborleyrectory · 10/11/2023 18:50

I was really surprised when I looked at menu of chinese with good reputation in town in Scotland and it had no tofu on the menu. A local one here, in the North West of England substitutes mock duck, chicken, beef etc on any order. I love beancurd in blackbean sauce, salt and pepper tofu and seaweed. There is an entirely veggie chinese in Manchester and one in Hebden Bridge that also does amazing veggie dishes.

Silkiefloof · 10/11/2023 18:53

Sometimes its worth suggesting things to the Chinese - we even took bananas there to get our banana fritters. 😂

wited · 10/11/2023 21:52

All the ones around her use the same woks they cook meat in so I can't eat there. It's v annoying.

MadeOfAllWork · 10/11/2023 21:55

People saying things in oyster sauce know it’s not veggie, right.

Neolara · 10/11/2023 22:02

I stopped going to Chinese restaurants about 20 years ago as there were rarely any decent veggie options. Which was very disappointing given the best veggie food I've ever had abroad was in China. The best dishes usually involved doing something fabulous with aubergine.

It’s really easy to get vegan ‘oyster’ sauce - I frequently buy in oriental supermarkets and from Amazon

QuickDraining · 10/11/2023 22:10

Amazed at the prospect of a vegan Chinese takeaway. I went to a very uninspiring veggie restaurant, that lauded itself on mock meat products.

I find Chinese very difficult. Something like tofu in black bean sauce and a spring roll is about as good as it gets for me. If I'm lucky they might just throw in a bit of green pepper. Never satiated. So I just try and avoid. I seem to do far far better for choice with Thai / Indian / Sri Lankan. But mileage varies between restaurants. Having said that, going out for an English is often a bloody nightmare.

Well yes, but is that what’s available at the local Chinese takeaway?

hexsnidgett · 10/11/2023 22:21

I am a bit distrustful of chinese restaurants as the menusSad so rarely specifies that things are vegetarian, just vegetable chow mein or vegetable spring rolls. It's a shame because I really like Chinese food.

ordinarybarbie · 10/11/2023 22:27

Singapore chow mein with no meat, mushroom foo young, egg fried rice and vegetable spring rolls

Locally to me some use it and some don’t so I choose where I go accordingly if I want oyster sauce as I’d imagine do other vegetarians in the thread.

None of my local Chinese takeaways specify that their oyster sauce is vegetarian. I never get a Chinese takeaway for this reason.
