Is this Pasta safe to eat?

FellInATrap · 07/11/2023 23:08

I cooked Spagbol last night ( Monday ) and plated 2 portions for my kids ( 6 & 18 months ) to eat tonight but it didn't get eaten.

Is it safe for them to eat tomorrow night?

It's in the fridge and it's covered.

Yes

no, not pasta, very high risk of food poisoning from rice and pasta, I wouldn't give it to children after two days.

TeaKitten · 07/11/2023 23:11

If it has already been reheated today then it’s not advised to reheat it more than once.

OhNoForever · 07/11/2023 23:12

Yes. Just make sure it's properly reheated (to 65C minimum), or steaming hot throughout f you don't have a temperature probe.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 07/11/2023 23:12

Oh! I missed that. If it's been re-heated then best not to.

Seriously? It'll be fine.

seriously? yes, they might be fine or they might be seriously ill, why would you risk it? Pasta and rice are exceptionally high risk. I would reheat the sauce after two days but never the pasta

Think you've got your facts wrong. Shop pasta salads aren't made, packaged and sold within 24 hours.

I'd eat it op. I'd even eat it up to 5 days later if stored correctly. Actually no, that's the meat. I'd probably cook fresh pasta by the Wednesday, if made on Monday.

I dont have my facts wrong, thank you very much. I find it shocking how many people on mumsnet dont realise the danger of food poisoning from pasta and rice - there was another thread on it a few weeks ago. No wonder we have so many food poisoning deaths in this country

Throwingpots · 08/11/2023 00:09

Absolutely fine to eat, just reheat well.

Are you sure about pasta? I always thought that rice was more problematic - it should be cooled down and refrigerated within 2 hours after cooking and eaten within 24 hours.

Growlybear83 · 08/11/2023 00:16

I'm not clear if the food was reheated tonight or not? If so, neither the pasta nor the sauce should be reheated again. But if it's just been kept in the fridge since Monday then I would use the sauce but definitely not the pasta.

Mossstitch · 08/11/2023 00:17

My sons have eaten reheated pasta and rice for decades and never been ill, so long as its put in the fridge or freezer shortly after being cooked and ensure piping hot. I have a self imposed cut off of 3 days in the fridge for meat products and rice but then I am emetophobic😏

TheFairyCaravan · 08/11/2023 00:26

Rice is dodgy but left over pasta is good for 3 days as long as it’s been put in the fridge within 2 hours of being cooked. I’d eat it, and I’m really funny about food.

Irritatedandfedup · 08/11/2023 00:28

Yes eat it . Just make sure it has been heated right through.

MrInbetween · 08/11/2023 00:29

It’s rice that is a problem not pasta. Some specific thing about it. Here you go:

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. The spores can survive when rice is cooked. If rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores can grow into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea.

MrInbetween · 08/11/2023 00:32

Long as stored properly and only reheated once it will be fine. Do not reheat food more than once.

pasta is exactly as damgerous

Year13novice · 08/11/2023 06:08

I know it’s just anecdotal but we eat leftover pasta for days! Sometimes it’s sat out all night (covered) as we forget to put it in the fridge after we’ve left it to cool. Sometimes we don’t reheat it at all and have it cold. Sometimes I just reheat it a small amount to take the cold edge off it (not piping hot). Sometimes I mix cold pasta with hot food. All of us do this regularly and not once have we been remotely unwell. We don’t risk it with rice though.

CareConumdrum · 08/11/2023 06:20

Pasta is fine in the fridge for a few days. Completely different to pasta. Can sometimes go a little rubbery if in the fridge on own, but if it's coated in sauce or pesto it stores really well. Your sauce is bolognese and again of all the meat products, cooked beef mince seems to have fewer bacteria issues.

If fact, if you google, there's now research to say that it's healthier to eat pasta reheated rather than when first cooked. Something about the starch in reheated pasta being less likely to increase blood sugar levels.

So go ahead and enjoy the bolognese. I would use it from the fridge up to 3 days. If storing for longer than that, I would freeze.

Can you provide a source for this please? I know that leftover rice is risky, but have never heard the same of pasta.

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 08/11/2023 06:25

I knew about rice being dangerous. I had bad food poisoning from a reheated risotto many years ago.

But I didn't know about the potential for food poisoning from pasta until know. Just been looking it up, and it really is as bad as rice. I'm never risking that again. Looks like we've just been very lucky up till now.

I sometimes make a big family size pasta bake and we eat the leftovers reheated the next day, having refrigerated it overnight. Don't fancy doing that again.
