Is this Pasta safe to eat?

70 replies

FellInATrap · 07/11/2023 23:08

I cooked Spagbol last night ( Monday ) and plated 2 portions for my kids ( 6 & 18 months ) to eat tonight but it didn't get eaten.

Is it safe for them to eat tomorrow night?

It's in the fridge and it's covered.

you are literally playing Russian Roulette - it is entirely by chance that you have not been seriously ill. Heating to "take the cold edge off" or mixing it with hot food is creating optimal pathogen growth conditions. Leaving it out of the fridge overnight then "heating a bit to take the cold edge off" - really? If I heard of a parent of a child in my school doing that it would be an immediate child protection case

It is no wonder social services are totally overwhelmed!

I am very OTT with stuff like this and I would be fine as a rule of thumb 72 hours. If cooked on Monday teatime though I’d never want to push it past Thursday lunchtime. Tuesday or Wednesday night fine. As with anything make sure it’s hot

SingingWaffleDoggy · 08/11/2023 20:46

I have a 3 day rule for any leftovers. Except rice, that’s next day or not at all.
Excuse my ignorance but I thought the thing about rice that makes it dangerous is found in the soil and as far as I know my fusilli (other pasta available) doesn’t grow like a carrot

@sesecondfavouritesocks

Backing you up on this one, it's true.

Rice in particular is notorious for Bacillus poisoning if left for too long, pasta generally less-so.

These bacteria can survive standard cooking, but many Asian cultures eat fried rice made from day-old rice, but they get around it by frying, which is much hotter.

You're more than likely ok with pasta but why chance it for something so cheap.

Child protection HAHHAHAHHAHAHSHBABABABHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHA

Universalsnail · 08/11/2023 21:54

not if you reheated it tonight. I would otherwise

Unusualactualname · 08/11/2023 22:29

Reheating pasta a couple of times can impact the texture. There aren't any hygiene implications, as long as you follow basic food safety precautions.

I'm staggered that 'man dies from eating 5 day old unrefrigerated pasta' has mumsnettedly morphed into 'pasta is as potentiaaly dangerous as rice'.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 08/11/2023 22:30

Not if its been heated twice

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 08/11/2023 22:40

@secondfavouritesocks you are correct about rice but completely wrong about pasta. Pasta will be fine after 48 hours in a fridge! Reheat it fully to piping hot OP and it will be fine.

I dont have my facts wrong, thank you very much. I find it shocking how many people on mumsnet dont realise the danger of food poisoning from pasta and rice - there was another thread on it a few weeks ago. No wonder we have so many food poisoning deaths in this country

Rice = yes
pasta = No
pasta is basically flour and water it’s not high risk.

Do we, @secondfavouritesocks ? How many people? What do they die from eating???

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 09/11/2023 12:55

We're all going to die!!!!!

Year13novice · 09/11/2023 12:57

I’m still alive (amazing since I ate some cold spaghetti last night).

sexnotgenders · 09/11/2023 12:59

@secondfavouritesocks dear god it sounds exhausting being you

Onlywedressbetter · 09/11/2023 13:01

Totally wrong, pasta is completely fine stored in the fridge and reheated.

It is. Hence why restaurants pre cook. Same with rice.

Sauerkrautsandwich · 09/11/2023 13:08

I am pretyy sure my last hygiene trainibg said 3 days for rice so surprised nhs says 1. I wonder if it's because people's home fridges aren't usually strictly monitored for temp and are often above 4c🤔

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 09/11/2023 13:14

It's because there are a lot of people who simply don't have the faculty to do things safely, so advice is very much geared toward making the 'rules' as simple and straightforward as possible. And yes, they can't guarantee fridges are at the right temp and so on relating to each step in the process.

ChickenBhunaandChips · 09/11/2023 16:05

Never heard of food poisoning from pasta, ever. Rice yes I’ve had had it and it was horrendous.

Leftovers are one of life’s best things.

OP you’ll be fine.
