What Enid Blyton book was this?

My daughter likes Enid Blyton books, especially the short story ones, and there's one I have a vague recollection of really enjoying but I can't for the life of my remember what it's called.

I remember there was a mean old woman who owned a bakery and made a cake with a sugar house on top that a brownie or pixie or something came to live in and basically used to shout out when she was being stingy. In true Blyton style she mended her ways in the end.

Anyone remember it?

Sounds like the magic faraway tree

GigiAnnna · 07/11/2023 15:40

It rings a bell. I think it could be the Magic Faraway Tree or the Wishing Chair but a lot of the books were similar.

Indeed.

It's not those, know those ones back to front. I'm struggling to think if it was one short story on it's own or one of those books that has one story lasting several chapters then some random one-chapter ones.

Adventures of Pip?

Rubyfw5 · 07/11/2023 15:59

Could it be Mr Pinkwhistle? It's a collection of short stories and there's one called "A surprise for Dame Gentle" which sounds familiar.

AnnaMasse · 07/11/2023 16:03

There's a 1947 collection called 'The Little Sugar-House and Other Stories'. I haven't been able to find out the plot of that story, but here's a pic of a 1970 edition cover. There seems to be a cake with a little house on top, and an sort of pixie type creature looking on.

Didn't she also publish a magazine of short stories for a number of years? You may have read it in one of those.

PickyCat · 07/11/2023 16:06

I was also going to suggest adventures of pop but it looks like @AnnaMasse has found it, that pic looks exactly what Op described 👏🏻

I was given a pile of Enid Blyton by an elderly aunt, and loved them.

I remember reading an Enid Blyton book to dd about a house with a big garden next to people in flats who couldn't have pets. The children of the house decided to hide pets at the bottom.of the garden for the flat dwellers. It got more and more outlandish the more animals that were moved in without the parents noticing. I think one was a pony.

All2Well · 07/11/2023 16:11

It was in a book I had, a collection of Enid Blyton stories in the 1990s called "Enid Blyton's Book of Naughty Children".

All2Well · 07/11/2023 16:13

@Tobacco I am pretty sure that was the Children of Green Meadows. I had a collection of stories about them too.

Wisenotboring · 07/11/2023 16:15

I loved this story. It was part of a complqtin of books and I have often tried to find it. Mine was a yellow hard back. There was also a lovely one about a little couple who made a house. Would love to find it again.

AnnaMasse · 07/11/2023 16:18

Lots of Blyton stories were mixed-and-matched into collections over the decades. And altered quite a lot to cater for changing attitudes.

Ooo that's just unlocked a minor memory for me.

A friend told me that one Enid B story was called "Mr Pinkwhistle Interferes" - does anyone know if that's true?

Oh my I've been hit with a wave of nostalgia. That's the book I had as a child. I feel like crying now, thank you for posting this pic.

That's the one. I probably have an old copy somewhere.

It's a slim book containing short stories.
The plot is as described in the OP, then at the end, after she mends her ways, the pixie tells everyone how kind she is.

BlueTongueSkink · 07/11/2023 16:43

I had 'Mr Pink-Whistle Interferes' too! My older brothers thought it was hilarious and I always used to wonder why!

Oganesson118 · 07/11/2023 16:44

Oh my goodness it IS the Little Sugar House! And I have just found a copy at one of the used book sites I use, happy days!

@Wisenotboring i think I had that yellow book and I remember the one about building a house! I wonder if the one posted above is the same book we had but with another cover. I will let you know when it arrives what other stories are in here.

But here’s a photo of the stories for nostalgia’s sake!
