What Enid Blyton book was this?

My daughter likes Enid Blyton books, especially the short story ones, and there's one I have a vague recollection of really enjoying but I can't for the life of my remember what it's called.

I remember there was a mean old woman who owned a bakery and made a cake with a sugar house on top that a brownie or pixie or something came to live in and basically used to shout out when she was being stingy. In true Blyton style she mended her ways in the end.

Anyone remember it?

I think I remember a couple of the others. The thrush one is definitely familiar.

I’m too late, due to digging out the book!
But here’s a photo of the stories for nostalgia’s sake!

Amazing! Such happy memories in that list.

AnnaMass - it's most definitely of its time that title - I know what you mean.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow - thank you for taking the time to do that, is it weird to say I can almost smell that book?

BlueTongueSkink - I've asked people over the years if they've heard of the title and got a similar reaction, I bet it's not going to be reprinted any time soon.

Was it the mystery of the invisible thief?

That said I have a first edition of an Enid Blyton book that I haven't yet given to my daughter because of the names of the golliwogs. I don't necessarily have a problem with her reading about golliwogs, actually there is one in the Amelia Jane books and she's never asked what one is, but their names... not sure I want her repeating a couple of those.

He is Chinky, the pixie or elf from the Wishing Chair series, the guy who lives in the garden shed. Dh and I were laughing about it when our kids read the books a few years ago.

Golli-what? Seriously???? Whatever the names are, that would be for the bin in my house.

Yes there was a thread about it a few months ago. It was a lovely thread, lots of EB fans reminiscing. I have the early 80s edit of Stories from Toyland and the chapters had been deleted at that point. Golliwog remains as a character called 'golliwog'.

Oganesson118 · 07/11/2023 20:19

Yeah Tales of Toyland and other stories isn't it. I had a reprint of it as a kid in the 90s and somehow the three of them were still there with their original names. Goodness knows how that slipped through the net but it did so I guess it wasn't a shock to see it in the 1st ed. I won't throw a book away because of some archaic terms.

The very term 'golliwog' is offensive, whatever the name.
