There are some further updates here (see link). The damage to the golf course is incredible.

It looks like a lot will hang on where the eruption (if it happens - as seems probable) occurs - the effects will be different if it’s in the sea I guess. But you would still get toxic gas issues and ash fall which could still damage the town.

And damage to the power station could be a major issue too (I saw some reports last night that there’s already damage to heating pipes locally), because it supplies heating and water to around 30,000 people and being without heating in Iceland in November/December is very serious.

I would think uk gov will issue travel advice soon if any concerns about flight disruption?

thanks puffin for updates.

This is one of those things where there's no way of knowing what if any effect there will be on air traffic until something actually happens - it's only then that the experts get some idea of the height ash is going to go to and what the lateral distribution due to the winds is likely to be.

FWIW as of Sat PM there's nothing being flagged up so far on this particular event on any of the aviation specific warnings sites I have access too.

As I mentioned way back in the thread it's not uncommon to see warnings about active volcanos around the world that are having a minor eruption and chucking stuff out (Etna was a hardy annual) but those often had zero to minimal effect on flights.

JaneKatSuttonGoals · 11/11/2023 13:30

My colleague's been tracking this all week coz she was due to fly yesterday. Not sure if she made it tbh.

Newgirls · 11/11/2023 16:51

The story has made the main bbc news now.

TentChristmas · 11/11/2023 16:58

@JemimaTab have you got links to the golf club damage, I couldn’t see it?

Wowzel · 11/11/2023 17:06

@TheThingIsYeah - where is the secret lagoon?

I appreciate it won't be secret if you tell me ;)

StormzyinaTCup · 11/11/2023 17:11

I bumped an older thread earlier today, completely missed this one so thanks to @Puffinshop for the signpost. Going to go back and read from the start now.

Puffinshop · 11/11/2023 17:26

Apparently not all the animals are out 😞 Most of the horses were evacuated but not all in time and people are not currently allowed to go back for them. Still sheep in the area too.

I think most people managed to take pets with them but cats that were out roaming at the time are still there. Of course human lives are the priority but I hope that if something happens people are able to rescue the animals before it does.

Ooo Icelandic volcano thread. Watching with interest.

I feel so much for the residents of Grindavik, though this has been a concern for a couple of years since the recent system became active. The access roads have been at risk previously and because of the gases. That said Grindavik is the greyest most miserable place I've ever been.

Re: blue lagoon. I've been twice. The first time I went it was really nice then it became really commercialised and awful. There are other natural hotwater places in Iceland imho. So if you are going, these are worth considering if the Blue Lagoon remains off limits. (It's been confirmed it's now closed for at least a week). Provided airspace isn't closed due to ash. They are putting in contingency plans for tourism should there be an issue (the main risk to Keflavik is ash. I doubt it's at risk otherwise. There is a smaller airport in Reykjavik itself which probably isn't big enough to run the bigger plans in and out from but they would be able to still get tourists off the Iceland if needed).

The best place for updates is

https://www.ruv.is/english/2023-11-10-magma-tunnel-lies-under-grindavik-live-396249

It's not been updated since noon. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. The earthquakes when I looked at lunch had been less strong (not checked since - again this isn't necessarily a good thing if energy is being stored).

The ground movements of 120cm in 3 hrs are a lot even by Iceland eruption standards and there's concern this could be a bigger eruption that the ones we've seen in recent years - though still only a VE0 or VE1 in strength.

Commenting largely so I can find this thread again. Have visited a couple of times and have a real soft spot for the country.

Certainly seems people are getting more concerned about it (have been seeing updates from the Lava Show account, amongst others). The emergency response there always seems phenomenally well coordinated and communicated, but I can’t imagine how difficult it is with something that remains pretty unpredictable. Hopefully it’s a case of plan for the worst and better safe than sorry.

quivers · 11/11/2023 17:38

They have just announced that they hope to allow people back in to collect any remaining pets, and they will take a decision tomorrow morning whether it is safe.

EdithStourton · 11/11/2023 17:39

I've sent some links to DH having found this thread.
He has an unhealthy interest in vulcanology.

Puffinshop · 11/11/2023 17:44

It would take a long time to get a lot of people out from Reykjavík airport - it is tiny. It does do international flights but only smaller planes to Greenland and Faroes so it could be a long and complicated process. I'm not sure, perhaps the smaller planes could make it all the way to the north of Scotland in an emergency? I don't know their range. It's also likely to be affected by ash if Keflavík is and the wind is blowing that way.

Akureyri has the space for larger planes I think... that might be an option, although the airport itself is very small.

I think the sea eruption was the least likely possibility so hopefully it won't come to that.

mafsfan · 11/11/2023 17:52

Following the updates and Facebook groups with interest having just returned from the Blue Lagoon and Grindavik 10 days ago. We felt tremors then and local people spoke about the concern that this eruption might be their side of the valley unlike the previous ones but nobody seemed to be expecting this severity so quickly. I can't believe the pictures of the road and the golf course! Hoping the people we met and those working at the hotel are all safe.

@JemimaTab have you got links to the golf club damage, I couldn’t see it?

It’s in the link I gave, but you have to scroll down quite a bit (to the heading that says “Huge cracks have opened in the golf course at Grindavík”).

Puffinshop · 11/11/2023 18:33

If you're on Facebook, the Road and Coastal Administration has shared some photos of the roads in Grindavík - they are in a sorry state!

You can also see them on visir.is and probably elsewhere.

Data from 12 hours ago shows the lava at a depth of just 800 m. It's looking very likely now that an eruption will occur in the next few days, perhaps today.

JemimaTab · 11/11/2023 18:43

There’s also some structural damage to some of the buildings, from some of the photos - large splits in walls etc. Which is hardly surprising given all the quakes. And there are quite a few videos doing the rounds on Facebook etc. which people have taken inside their houses in Grindavík when the quakes were happening - which show just how terrifying it was.

Hence people leaving a few days ago before the mandatory evacuation because the earthquakes were so bad. I imagine that even if there is no eruption in Grindavik there will be people who lose their homes anyway.

JemimaTab · 11/11/2023 19:05

Latest update from the national broadcaster: now saying that the probability of an eruption has increased, and magma is approaching the surface.

Iceland - possible eruption due near the Blue Lagoon

Jeez that interview was scary. Takes it in his stride indeed. Him and the interviewer both chuckling.

CormorantStrikesBack · 11/11/2023 19:30

Is this likely to affect flights in and out of the U.K. again if the volcano erupts? Ash cloud and all that.
