Where would do the least damage?

icelandtrip2024 · 24/02/2024 21:55

From the last one.

Oh wow! Were these the photos you could only upload once you were home again?

icelandtrip2024 · 25/02/2024 01:06

Yeah, have to admit it was a lot more fun before we realised the damage it had done.

A perennial theme. Hopefully they get away with it. I assume they don't know about the man who died but some people have no common sense anyway.

Puffinshop · 28/02/2024 20:47

Highly distasteful to be treating people's recently destroyed houses as a tourist attraction in any case, even if it was safe.

There is a special museum on Heimaey for people who are interested in what happens when lava flows into a town, and yes it is very interesting, but for gods sake show some respect.

CrunchyCarrot · 29/02/2024 12:14

From Rob Tasker's video today, he showed a post from the FB Iceland Geology group, someone asked how safe would it be to go to the Blue Lagoon. I think the reply says it all. My neighbour is a geologist and she agrees, it's madness.

Iceland - possible eruption due near the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is like a symbol of everything that is wrong with the greed of mass tourism in Iceland.

Anyone even contemplating going anywhere near the Blue Lagoon at the moment must need their head examined.

Þorvaldur predicts a new eruption on 1 March. So if there's one thing we can be sure of, it's that nothing will happen on 1 March!

Well let's see 😆

Bimblesalong · 01/03/2024 18:21

Let's not have too much fiery shenanigans in the next week or so, as my nephew is out on a geography A-level trip! He's going to love the place so much!

Puffinshop · 01/03/2024 18:44

Well the Met Office thinks it'll be this evening or this weekend. It won't affect your nephew, I'm sure. If he's lucky he might get a view from the plane. Geography in action!

Bimblesalong · 01/03/2024 21:16

He will love that and hopes to study Geog at Uni. Iceland is such a fantastic country.

Hope all keep safe.

Quite an exciting couple of hours with a huge earthquake swarm near Svartsengi but no eruption as yet, news update:

https://www.vedur.is/um-vi/frettir/jardhraeringar-grindavik

From my reading of it, the magma appears to have moved but not reached the surface. That may be all that happens, or an eruption may take place. Nothing certain yet!

RomComPhooey · 02/03/2024 18:24

It didn’t arrive on 1 March as forecast so today’s as good as any day. It’s interesting how this has settled into a slightly more predictable pattern (for now).

Puffinshop · 02/03/2024 18:24

Yes, a 'magma intrusion' is happening but not broken the surface. Grindavík and Blue Lagoon are being evacuated.

No boiled tourists?

That's a shame.

Just the fastest, most stressful exit from a swimming pool of their lives 😆Probably didn't have time to wash their hair.

Yeah you deffo want to wash your hair when leaving the Blue Lagoon...

RomComPhooey · 02/03/2024 18:39

The Blue Lagoon is not an easy pool to get out of quickly. It’s huge, quite slippery and there aren’t many places to get out in amongst the landscaped edges. I’m with the locals. I would not have risked it under the current circumstances. 😬

Now NO eruption is the most likely outcome
Seismic activity has moved a little to the south, but has overall decreased significantly, says Benedikt Halldórsson, professional director at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

The land deformation was smaller than experts have seen before and the seismic activity was also mild.

It seems that the intensity of the seismic activity has decreased, which is interpreted by the Icelandic Met Office as meaning that the magma is moving less.

There is little indication that the magma is coming to the surface right now.

The most likely scenario is that there is no eruption as a consequence of this magma flow.
