Can anyone help with my itchy scalp?

I've posted on women's health as I think it's menopause related but had no response so thought I'd try here.
My scalp is so itchy atm. Not nits or dandruff - I'm 51 with very few symptoms of the menopause atm but reading up suggests it could be related? I've never suffered with an itchy scalp before.
Any suggestions how I can reduce the itchiness would be grateful received!

Do you shampoo every time you shower? Does it feel dry or more oily?

J3llycat · 03/11/2023 11:01

Nizroral from Boots! Leave it in your hair for a few mins then wash out in the shower (I apply normal shampoo after)

J3llycat · 03/11/2023 11:01

Sorry, *Nizoral

Agree with Nizoral, have used it before and it was great, although I think it depends on why it’s itchy

TurquoiseDress · 03/11/2023 11:03

Yes I recommend Nizoral shampoo I've used it on/off since I was teenager and only need to use a few times until things settle down

Have also bought it off Amazon depending on supermarket prices/Boots special offers Grin

I found it was the SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) in shampoo that gave me an itchy scalp. Also discovered it was in aqueous cream (which I was using to help with itchy dry skin!). Look for SLS free products.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/11/2023 11:14

Nizarol made my dry scalp worse.

Dd was covered in eczema on her scalp it was terrible.

I’ve tried every single shampoo. And was blown away by ‘As l am dry and itchy’ Sorted me and her.

NCTDN · 03/11/2023 11:17

Thanks for the suggestions. I stopped using purple shampoo as i read that the sulfates in that can increase itchiness. I'll look for that one in boots.
Interesting about aqueous cream - I'm going to check what's in the conditioner that I use. It's very stuffy and gentle I think- but could be surprised.
I'm meant to be getting highlights in a couple of weeks but bothered that might aggravate my scalp. Usually the bleach element is good for my hair as it dries it a bit and my hair goes very greasy quickly.

Yes, it is a premenopausal symptom. I tried so many things but the Aveda itchy scalp shampoo is the only thing that worked for me.

Sunshineandchill · 03/11/2023 11:51

I think it is menopausal and age related. I use the T Gel shampoo and it works for me. I tried Pure and Simple which ironically made it worse!

IcedupTulip · 03/11/2023 12:00

I have this but just along my parting and nowhere else on my scalp. It’s so strange. Haven’t found anything to soothe it but as it comes and goes it’s more bearable.

BankruptedByBirds · 03/11/2023 12:01

I'm 51 and was suffering with a terribly itchy scalp until I started using Head and Shoulders dermax pro shampoo and conditioner. Completely fixed it for me and leaves my hair nice and soft. T Gel is good too but smells revolting, like old ashtrays.

Blueberrycreampie · 03/11/2023 12:17

Going to try some of these - used t gel in the past but itchiness has returned!

wisewomanmummy · 03/11/2023 12:24

I have this with ordinary shampoos but not with Simple shampoo.
Worth a try.

saltnpepper2000 · 03/11/2023 12:31

I have psoriasis on my scalp and the itching used to drive me crazy.
Following a MN recommendation I now use this and the itching has gone.

KÉRASTASE SPECIFIQUE DERMO-CALM... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0752VJDJ4?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

Glitterb · 03/11/2023 12:33

Look at hair syrup (especially the mint condition oil) this is brilliant for soothing the itch and also adding some oil back into your scalp if it’s dry. I have scalp psoriasis and have tried everything, this oil once a week works wonders for me!

littleripper · 03/11/2023 12:45

Do you use differin or retinol on your skin?

Startoftheyear2023 · 03/11/2023 13:12

I recommend Dercos shampoo. It removed the problem for me.

blitzen · 03/11/2023 14:32

Have you tried the body shop ginger shampoo? It's for dandruff mainly but I find it's all I can use to avoid an irritated scalp. It does contain SLS though.

Wwwnothingdotcom · 03/11/2023 14:35

I had this when my hair were wet a lot and long time. My hairdryer broke and I swam a lot at the time.
Salt water like sea water amount of salt helped so much. I used it one afternoon and didn't waah it out until next day. Now I make sure my hair dry so I swish hair around because I don't like much heat on them😂

Borageandchips · 03/11/2023 14:38

How is your diet op? Some people say it’s an overgrowth of Candida. Maybe cut out sugar and test out the theory?

T gel do a clear odourless version which is better.

DirectionToPerfection · 03/11/2023 14:42

Use TGel for a few washes (until you notice an improvement) then go back to whatever shampoo you like an use the TGel about every third/fourth wash.

Sorted it out for me.

This odd interesting because I went swimming yesterday and my hair was wet for ages. Last night was the worst itchiness in ages.

I'm going to go to boots and search all their shampoos. Will see what's on offer and try that one first I think.
