Is it allowed to put political flags on public lamp posts for the entire street?

HaveANiceevening · 02/11/2023 19:07

I noticed that the Palestine flags were on every single lamp post on the entire street and the next one in my neighbourhood.
This area has a mixed population; some of them are Jewish.

Can the council put the flags up like this? Or is it likely to be individuals?

Thank you.

I’d assume that they were anti semitic and intimidating the Jewish community.
Racism mustn’t be tolerated.
These are people that think it’s a great idea to dye live mice and throw them into McDonalds, so we can add animal abuse to their crimes of misogyny, anti Semitism and homophobia.

Who are they?

@SharonEllis

Despite the similarities between Ukraine and Palestine, cognitive biases lead European diplomacies and media to interpret these two conflicts in almost opposite ways

@PackageCount167

All my Russian friends (living like me in the British isles) are on Ukraine's side, have gone on pro Ukraine demonstrations and have put Ukrainian flags up themselves.
So not likely to be intimidated by Ukrainian flags.

Unlike in this case where the Palestinian flags have most likely been placed to intimidate the local Jewish population, as if they've not living in fear enough in Britain, and their children's schools don't have enough security measures....

Incidentally, currently some unionist areas of NI are flying Israel flags and some nationalist areas are flying Palestine flags.

This does not surprise me. It's as if humans are always just looking for a reason to fight, and even before this I've seen these flags stuck on the big bonfires (both sides).

And? You’re looking for trouble quite clearly 🙄

In an ideal world, I would. But I am just a single person and the council I live in is famous for its corruption and electron fraud.

Edited

That's a pretty serious allegation about your council OP! Are these provable facts (corruption and I presume you mean electoral fraud) or just local rumours? Are you even in the UK?

Well, whatever. I don't want to derail. Either report it or don't. Up to you.

Looking to make something out of nothing. It’s not a criminal offence to display the flag of Palestine. Is that you Suella?

Maybe is it nothing to you, and I fully respect that. But it is something to me - thus the post.
No, it is not Suella.

I always thought the political parties were only allowed to put flags up on lamposts if there was an election coming. And strictly have to take them down again within a timeframe afterwards.

The people who let the mice into McDonalds are the same people who tied the flags to the lamp posts?

PoisonJuicy · 02/11/2023 21:13

I bet OP doesn’t have an issue with the Ukrainian flag being displayed…. I wonder why? 🤔

If M&S will pull a nationwide advert because of perceived offence, then it should be pretty easy to see why overt demonstrations of sectarianism - or actions perceived to be such - shouldn’t be allowed either.

BigFatLiar · 02/11/2023 21:15

I believe that attaching flags etc to lampposts without permission is an offence. Report to your council highways dept and they should remove them.

As is flyposting but it isn't stopping people.

I think taking down the flags will just cause more tensions. No one has any idea of the motivations behind the flags being out up, apart from support for the Palestinian cause.

Just because some Jewish people live there it doesn't automatically mean the flags were put up to intimidate people, just as someone mentioned in the thread lots of Jewish people in the UK are appalled at what's happening in Gaza and the West Bank.

Gothambutnotahamster · 02/11/2023 21:29

The flags absolutely should be removed. Can you use the 'Fix my street' website instead? Think then you just give postcode and report the issue with no need for identifying details.

Are you serously saying that anything in my post is untrue? Have you not read the details of the Hamas attack? they posted the footage of their attacks themselves and it is freely available on social media.

No one said your post was untrue. They are clearly stating what’s happening in West Bank where Hamas don’t have control and how the innocent civilians of Gaza are being killed by having white phosphorus bombs dropped on them. Whole families are being wiped out when this is nothing to do with them. Israel may have pulled out of Gaza but have the ability to stop food water and fuel. The innocent people who survived the bombs are being starved to death. Clearly a genocide against innocent civilians who have no control over Hamas.

I haven't said anything about your post is untrue. I'm observing that you are showing bias, as your post is hugely one sided.
Are you saying anything in my post is untrue? I asked you questions but you appear to have ignored them

Just imagine how quickly an Israeli flag would disappear...

sunshinesupermum · 02/11/2023 22:24

Pretty sure it isn't Jewish people putting Palestinian flags up even if some are misguided in their support of Hamas PackageCount

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 02/11/2023 22:35

I’d be going out and ripping them down if they were in my street.

You obviously live in Tower Hamlets. The council have been regularly taking down the flags on lamp posts and they have regularly been replaced by members of the public. No one working in the complaints department of the council is going to care you complained about some flags let alone harass you and neither is the person who gets to respond to your letter at your local MPs office.

I read a pretty interesting and plausible article on how Russia is basically behind the Hamas attacks.

So, yes similarities between Ukraine and Palestine is that they are both victims of Russian aggression. (and Israel is a victim too)
