New Beatles song

Oh God it gave me the chills hearing John's voice in a new song.

I wouldn't even describe myself as a particular Beatles fan, but it brought a tear to my eye.

I haven’t heard it and don’t know how I feel about it.

Staticgirl · 02/11/2023 16:10

It sounds like what it is, a demo that got gussied up before it was ready. Some bits are nice, others should have been cut and that overblown orchestra should have been left off. A nice chamber music group or a string quartet perhaps, keep it intimate. But it's not terrible.

longtompot · 02/11/2023 16:12

Same @cheezncrackers I am listening to it for the third time (6music)

I had a chat with my dd about the use of artists voices after they've died and how we feel about it. She is on the side of not doing it as, in the example of Robin Williams, his family esp his dd are unhappy about hearing his voice being used in things he didn't do. I said I think as long as family and immediate friends are ok with it, then it should be ok, but if they aren't then their wishes should be respected.

Was pretty good, though you can tell it was from a demo.

Big upside is I'm listening to Scott Mills on catch up and it's pretty good, I've never listened to his show before.

@longtompot it's an interesting issue isn't it and one that comes up more and more often now that technology can bring dead actors, musicians and others back to life. Paul McCartney said he feels sure that John would be okay with them finishing the song and releasing it and he did record the song, albeit on a demo tape with I think just guitar accompaniment. It reminded me what a terrible loss his death was. Such a great musician - what did we lose when he was killed? Surely decades more of wonderful music.

Listening to it, I felt so moved, loved it.

Ffsmakeitstop · 02/11/2023 17:29

DH listened to it and he s a massive fan. He didn't like it and said it was obvious why John Lennon didn't finish it.

Notquitegrownup2 · 02/11/2023 20:18

Didn't particularly enjoy it but I love the fact that it is being released as a single on vinyl with Love Me Do on the other side - their first and last singles on the same record.

I was prepared not to like it, actually. But that one line of Paul’s, ‘Always to return to me’ literally took my breath away. I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s so utterly tragic. Heartbreaking.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/11/2023 21:30

The more I listen the more I like it. John's voice is so good.

yesterdaytoday · 02/11/2023 21:51

I’m surprised by how much I love it. The original demo is John in the throes of depression - I couldn’t imagine how the song could be anything but miserable. But typical Paul, takes a sad song and makes it better.

And yes, that lyric, “Always to return to me”. If only.

peachgreen · 02/11/2023 21:54

I think I was spoiled by Free As A Bird which I really adored. Still, it’s nice to have, and a nice reminder of how John and Paul complemented each other.

greengreengrass25 · 03/11/2023 14:00

Loved this, very emotional song

AbbeyGailsParty · 03/11/2023 14:07

Love it. Made me cry, I can still picture exactly where I was the moment I heard John had been killed.

Wendysfriend · 03/11/2023 14:43

It's really good. The video is very well done too. The short film on YouTube about how it came to be finally made is quite sad but really lovely at the same time.

User8646382 · 03/11/2023 14:43

I love the video. Oh my God, it’s perfect. It’s Mimi’s John and Paul’s John brought back to life. John before he got his soul sucked out of him, while he still had a sense of humour. What a gift and what a final message to leave to the world, not to take life too seriously.

Thanks, lads, for all the memories.

dumdededdumdum · 03/11/2023 17:57

The video is so so beautiful.

The more I listen to it the more I like it. I think it grows on you.

TheMarzipanDildo · 03/11/2023 18:36

I thought it was beautiful

That’s a nice touch with the vinyl I didn’t know that.

I wasn’t that keen when I heard it on the radio earlier, but I’ve never been a massive Beatles fan.

TomAllensWhiskMic · 03/11/2023 18:36

Awww the video was so well done! I loved it 😍

SwedishEdith · 03/11/2023 18:40

It's very moving. It reminds me of Bowie's and Leonard Cohen's last songs. I know not quite the same circumstances but has that weight of sadness and endings about it. Will look properly at the video this weekend.

I'm not sure we would. The magic of the Beatles was Lennon and McCartney songwriting together, with George and Ringo. Plus George Martin of course.

Neither of them did anything particularly amazing after the Beatles. I say that as a big Beatles fan.

The song is melancholic and sweet, but I think maybe it should have stayed where it was.

Clawdy · 03/11/2023 18:46

That video is incredible. Wonderful.

User8646382 · 03/11/2023 18:53

Paul has had a remarkable solo career, but he and John together were touched by God. They were a miracle, the likes of which we will never see again.

I don’t think the Beatles would have reunited, but I think John and Paul would. They were on the cusp of doing so before John was killed.
