Strong smelling reasonably priced candles

I love scented candles but I've bought a few cheapo ones recently and they don't smell at all.

Any recommendations?

Yankee but then again some can be overpowering x

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/11/2023 08:57

Aldi? They usually have Jo Malone dupes out around this time of year.

I love the Sand and Fog ones in TKMaxx, they smell really nice and there's loads of different scents.

Sandalholidays12 · 02/11/2023 08:59

Home Bargains or Primark

margotrose · 02/11/2023 09:00

Home Bargains do surprisingly nice ones and they're cheap too.

TheBitterBoy · 02/11/2023 09:03

Home bargains! Their Wickford and Co range are amazing and super cheap. They actually fill the room with their scent when you light them. I have a carrot cake one on the go at the moment. Also love the gingerbread one, and warm apple and cinnamon for this time of year. They do some lovely light summer fragrances too.

I’ve got an M&S candle, unlit and in its box, it’s in a spare room and I can smell it if the door is open when I walk past the room. I’d say that’s a pretty strong scent. It’s one of the Christmas ones, mandarin, clove and cinnamon.

DaizenShine · 02/11/2023 09:39

Would you consider a wax melt burner? The electric ones are amazing, I always find wax melts to smell a lot stronger

Ywlala92 · 02/11/2023 09:41

Yankee, or if looking for cheaper, try Dunnes

Betty36 · 02/11/2023 09:41

I love Yankee and I have some from M&S - and they smell nice

3WildOnes · 02/11/2023 09:42

Lily flame candles have a strong scent.

Grotbag81 · 02/11/2023 09:43

Aldi have £2.99 big candles at the tills i the tropical yellow one. Great smell and value.

budgiegirl · 02/11/2023 09:57

Adli have candles in a jar - £2.99, and they smell lovely.

garlicandsapphires · 02/11/2023 09:58

St Evals.

BlackJumpsuit · 02/11/2023 10:04

St Eval candles are lovely but I wouldn't call them cheap, I suppose it depends what you're comparing them to 😊

Clyde Candles are excellent and a similar price level so around £13-14 for a small tin.

TKMaxx often has good candle bargains, that would be my first place to look.

Bath and bodywork's are amazing but pricey at around £25 . Worth it im my opinion got the amazing scent . Next do them sometimes in the sale so even better

Which ones are very strong please

GonnaNeedABiggerBag · 02/11/2023 10:10

I’m not a fan of candles that contain paraffin (Yankee, Aldi, Home Bargains etc) and prefer soy candles or melts. Better for the environment, animals and general health.

I really like Glass and Wick scents for this reason. Not too strong but smell beautiful.

Justcashnosweets · 02/11/2023 10:13

Another vote for Home Bargains candles. Most of the scents are lovely and they are strong enough to waft around the house, but not too strong they give you a headache!

I hate they are so expensive here - they often have B1G1free and at the moment they are $14.95 as well - so why they are £25 here its a bloody outrage!

(I know, import duties etc)

I'm selective but Aldi have some lovely ones randomly in the Aisle of Wonders that I tend to buy in accidental "add to cart" moments.

JellyMops · 02/11/2023 10:20

Home Bargains have really good candles. The gingerbread one is VERY Christmasy!

Soy, and other vegetable wax candles and no better for the environment, animals or anything else than paraffin. This was debunked years ago and the report that started all this false information from south Carolina state university was found to have been made up to favour American agriculture . Subsequently peer reviewed scientific studies have been carried out in Denmark to show that paraffin and vegetable waxes have the same emissions. The only better one is beeswax.
Soy wax is absolutely shocking for the environment. Growing soya beans not only decimates rain forests in south America (David Attenborough did a series on this) but is the biggest cause of soil erosion on the American plains.
To make soy wax, the pulp has to be extracted using a petroleum based chemical called hexane, it then has to be hydrogenated using fossil fuels and bleached, again using chemicals.

I think the cheaper candles have scent smeared on the top which quickly evaporates. If you have access to home sense or TK Maxx I recommend Parks, This Works or very occasionally you'll find Neom. They sometimes sell Yankee and the scent lasts but I find them too sweet or fruity . Other than that an electric wax burner and wax melts are good and you can switch the fragrance more often
