LOVE the M&S ad

I am so fed up of being told and shown how people should spend Christmas and how things should be done because that’s how they’ve always been…

Bah humbug I say! Sadly for some Christmas is all about routine and is a chore to please everyone!

Every year we get picture perfect images of what Christmas should look like - only for many it really doesn’t look like this for lots of reasons.

And as for the flag… I think people really are stretching if they think M&S were trying to make any political statement!

You made it up!

asterel · 02/11/2023 18:30

🙄 Making stuff up that isn’t really there
actually makes people distrust what else you claim, not the reverse.

It’s pretty clear that lots of accounts claiming to be offended about the ad on Twitter were just circulating nonsense. Large amounts of them appeared to be non-U.K., and completely unaware that red, silver and green are Christmas colours, to start with. Have any of them acknowledged that they might have got it fantastically, stupidly wrong here?

lickthepony · 02/11/2023 18:33

The only M&S Christmas ad I've seen this year is one with Dawn French as a fairy and a pair of mittens. I feel like I've missed out. The one I saw was awful.

Tarmaced · 02/11/2023 18:34

As someone who can't stand Christmas, I LOVED it and @asterel I agree with you, some very odd thinking people out there! 😆

asterel · 02/11/2023 18:40

Anyway, to return to topic and also to repeat what else I said in my deleted post:

I liked the ad. Mainly because who wouldn’t want to boot elf on the bloody shelf into a wood chipper? There’s a second strain of loonery currently going around Twitter, and it seems to be some offended Christians who claim the ad is disrespectful to Christian traditions! Elf on the shelf was made up as a commercial product in about 2010 to sell the proprietary elf dolls, so it’s hardly Mary and the baby Jesus, is it?

Surely that’s the entire point of the ad - that the bloody commercial elf isn’t really any kind of precious tradition at all! Christmas isn’t all just about writing cards or doing what you think you have to. If anything, it’s all a bit anodyne, tbh!

asterel · 02/11/2023 18:46

I know it’s from Wikipedia, sorry, but here’s some history of Elf on the shelf. My mistake, it was originally invented in the US around 2005, but only took off after about 2010. It was quite literally invented to sell the dolls and market the “concept”!

What a miserable ad. Joyless & crap.

I'm assuming it cost a lot so it a waste of money too.

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/11/2023 20:38

It’s just been on again. The cards being burnt by Sophie are white with a green wreath on them decorated with red holly or baubles.

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2023 20:59

Have you looked at a Palestinian flag recently?

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/11/2023 21:05

No but do they have eChristmas wreaths on them?

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2023 21:10

No, and it’s also red, white, green and black. Just in case anyone is forgetting about the black bit.

RedRiverShore4 · 02/11/2023 21:11

I liked it.

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/11/2023 21:12

Exactly @noblegiraffe . What a load of fuss about absolutely nothing!

ilovebrie8 · 02/11/2023 21:23

Much ado about nothing …

StarDolphins · 02/11/2023 21:28

M&S pandering is ridiculous. Just say the ad was made a long time ago using traditional Christmas colours & advert & is staying.

exLtEveDallas · 02/11/2023 21:30

I thought Christmas colours were red, GOLD and green <misses point of thread>

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2023 21:32

No, that's the colours of the karma chameleon.

ThelmaBorden · 02/11/2023 21:39

Ladies- sigh - why waste your time with cynical commercialism
2023, when you can indulge in the M&S ad 2002, on youtube,
for the millisecond of Sean Bean, bearing a gift just for you,
thank me later

goldennavy · 02/11/2023 21:47

Love it

RovenderKitt · 02/11/2023 21:54

I like it - am very tempted to chip our elf this year!!!

usernamealreadytaken · 02/11/2023 22:18

lockedinflavour · 02/11/2023 17:37

No but they can see what is happening in parts of the world right now, take a step back and think about what is and isn't appropriate imagery to share at this very present time! How

It’s not appropriate to share anything red, white and green, or blue at the moment which might be construed as having any kind of negative connotation by the permanently offended?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/11/2023 23:54

M&S statement

LOVE the M&S ad
TedWilson · 03/11/2023 00:09

I like the ad! My initial thought when I saw Sophie Ellis Bextor torching the cards was they may get a slap on the wrist for fire safety. However the Palestinian flag thing is a load of crap - someone is looking for that based on the history of M&S. i think whatever they did this year someone would have found something anti Palestine with.
I've also seen comments reading into other things like Sophie's blue eyeshadow represents Israel. FFS.

Justcallmebebes · 03/11/2023 00:44

Yuck. All of them, especially starting at the beginning of November. We now worship at the altar of crap, useless materialistic consumption and then bleat on about the environment. Mind boggling

spidermonkeys · 03/11/2023 06:43

I thought it was a pretty rubbish attempt at an Xmas ad. However the stretch to say it was political is ridiculous. The ad would have been thought out and filmed months ago.
