I wish I knew this before I signed up.

I signed up for Gohenry to allow my child to use a card that belongs to them and has a certain limit of money.

I signed up to Gohenry, completed the application, so far so good.

We received the card but it was the incorrect design. Just spoke to customer service via chat who advised me of how to order a new card. All fine.
However, upon trying to do so, it is asking me for my child's gender. The options are: female, male and non-binary. Confused, I choose not to add one but it doesn't allow me to continue. After speaking to customer service I was informed that I have to select a gender in order to continue.
My child is 6.

Does anyone know of any companies that have a similar service but also know the difference between sex and gender and don't enforce genders upon preschoolers?

Well just put either male or female, I’m not understanding the issue here?

Camillasw · 30/10/2023 16:07

In the words of Elsa... Let it go!

Just put the gender that is on their birth certificate

Or alternatively give him/her real cash - you know that thing that is accepted everywhere and has no age or gender preferences

Camillasw · 30/10/2023 16:08

And wait until they are 11 and then they can have a proper bank account with proper debit card

BarbaraofSeville · 30/10/2023 16:09

Birth certificates state sex not gender. Not that there's any reason for a financial institution to know what sex a child (or anyone for that matter) is to issue them with a bank card.

Strawberryjams · 30/10/2023 16:16

What do you want the options to be? I really don’t get the issue?

Gender - male or female
Sex - male or female
Im genuinely confused 🫤

Hyperjar is much better and free. I don't remember anything about any sex/gender questions.

SugarCraving · 30/10/2023 17:22

I looked at the Go Henry card. However I found the monthly fee off putting. There are several accounts that you could have and add your child with an under 18 account,

It was beneficial when my dc turned 14 and could use apple/android pay.

For those who don't understand the issue perhaps Google self ID. I don't need to explain how detrimental it can be to conflict genders and sexes and how I am being forced to choose a gender for my 6yo.

I’ve got a feeling you might be looking to get a rise out of people but…

a) how will your 6 year old know what box you’ve ticked on a form? Therefore how could it be detrimental.

b) if you don’t want them to identify as a specific gender yet why don’t you just pick the third option.

c) a 6 year old is really young for a bank card. If you want them to spend a bit of their own money, maybe use cash and it helps with their maths too as they have to think more. However each to their own.

Warehouuse · 30/10/2023 17:36

Don't be so pathetic.

It's nothing to do with what my child identifies as. You're completely missing the point.
My child knows there are two sexes, I'm not teaching them gender ideology.

It's detrimental to my child as much as self ID is dangerous to any female. I am not using them as I refuse to use a company that forces gender ideologies on anyone, let alone my 6yo.

I haven't carried cash in many years. For most of the things where the money would be spent it would require a card and there's other benefits. I'll try Hyperjar

Because you’re over complicating things when like you said it’s either male or female.
just either tick the boxes or don’t bother getting the card.
I am really baffled by all this stuff you have written on here tbh.

But your 6 year old is either Male or female on their birth certificate under sex this is what I don’t understand. I did google when reading this initially and I am honestly at a loss. Make and female is used for both sex and gender so genuinely what options would you like to see?

Warehouuse · 30/10/2023 18:01

I agree with the above that you're just trying to get a rise out of people. Just to add, I work for a mainstream bank and you'll have to also declare if they are a boy or girl with them too. Stop being so pathetic.

Iloveshoes123 · 30/10/2023 18:03

Try hyper jar - no fee so much better.
Not sure re the gender issue.

Totaly · 30/10/2023 18:03

Those monthly fees add up - and no 6 year old need a card.

They need to learn about money and spending their penny’s not a bank statement.

ichundich · 30/10/2023 18:07

What a non-issue.

@Strawberryjams Correct. My child has a sex.

  1. Why does their sex matter?
  2. They don't understand the difference between sex and gender.
  3. Using gender instead of sex causes a whole host of issues for females, I'm surprised I need to spell these out to people on a site predominantly used by females.

"What gender are you?"
"I'm female. Okay (male) come and use our female toilets."

OP posts:
NancyDrooo · 30/10/2023 19:57

I’m confused even though I understand the difference.

If it said sex instead of gender, would you happily tick ‘girl’?

Why can’t you use the non-binary option in this situation?

No because "girl" isn't a sex and male and female aren't genders.
My child is not non binary.
