I wish I knew this before I signed up.

I signed up for Gohenry to allow my child to use a card that belongs to them and has a certain limit of money.

I signed up to Gohenry, completed the application, so far so good.

We received the card but it was the incorrect design. Just spoke to customer service via chat who advised me of how to order a new card. All fine.
However, upon trying to do so, it is asking me for my child's gender. The options are: female, male and non-binary. Confused, I choose not to add one but it doesn't allow me to continue. After speaking to customer service I was informed that I have to select a gender in order to continue.
My child is 6.

Does anyone know of any companies that have a similar service but also know the difference between sex and gender and don't enforce genders upon preschoolers?

GoHenry

Just pick male or female - you know the correct answer either way.

Stop reaching for things that don't need to be made into an issue.

It is an issue. Why do they need to know my child's "gender"?

I feel for you, genuinely. I don’t have those concerns. I have a great husband, a much loved brother and an awful sister, a son and a daughter, and a dad who was a better parent than my mum. Oh, and a trans nephew who is still finding his way being a young man but would not get this stressed about ticking a box on an application form.

ElleLeopine · 30/10/2023 20:39

My daughter has a Gohenry card. I suppose that when setting up that I must have ticked female.
Now, in the parent login section, when it refers to her, it says her.
I think that I would be very irritated if it was referring to her as he or they. But I guess that's why they ask. I don't think that it makes a difference in any other way.
So I guess that what I am saying is that I really don't see what the problem is?

ichundich · 30/10/2023 20:58

I fail to see how GoHenry card options make you "unsafe at night". I've reported this thread because it's in the wrong Section.

I refuse to use a company that tries to force gender ideologies on 6yos and cannot understand the importance of gender vs sex.

That's amazing. I'm happy for you. I wish my life were unaffected by men and I had no fear of them. Good for you.

I understand you @users6621005 its like having to tick a box stating your religion when you don't have one. And all of the completely bewildered posters feigning wide eyed innocence , you're part of the problem.

Still wouldn't pay for a card though, deffo look for one of the free ones.

I agree. I don't understand how females can genuinely have no understanding of the danger these things pose.

I would prefer a free one. 😁 Do you know any? Tip Jar is on the list to try.

Hyperjar is much better and free. I don't remember anything about any sex/gender questions.

This! We discovered HyperJar and it's much better than GoHenry or RoosterMoney because it's free! Their customer service is also excellent- you can speak to an actual human.

My daughter has just come back from a school trip to New York and her HyperJar card worked there without any issues. The only thing you can't do is withdraw cash.

Boomboom22 · 30/10/2023 21:13

Hyperjar is free as long as you put at least 10 pounds over a time. And brilliant. I have no idea why anyone pays a monthly fee for these things and also agree with your reason for boycotting.

Boomboom22 · 30/10/2023 21:15

And if you are not a twat (I am) when they get a phone they can use the child app version and control their money / savings jars etc. So their card can't overspend if they are saving. You can do it always too.

Oh it's free? Even better. Thank you. I'll get onto it tomorrow. 🙂

I pressed the wrong button and now can't seem to sort it. I might try the helpline again though!

users6621005 · 30/10/2023 21:16

@XelaM Thank you. Looks like that's the one to go. Tbh I didn't research them, it just came up as an ad but Hyper Jar sounds perfect so thanks for the recommendations.

By asking you to select the gender what they are really asking is for you to select what sex stereotype your 6 year old child identifies with. Why on earth do they need to know that. It’s a bank card.

ididntthough · 30/10/2023 21:18

You can get a free Revolut with one free <18 card. Can’t remember the gender bollocks when I signed up - but the free bit was my main reason for dumping Go Henry.
it’s a rip off and also very hard to get refunds to the card so glad I ditched them.

NancyDrooo · 30/10/2023 21:19

I wouldn’t pay a fee for minimal spending, have heard Hyperjar is a good alternative. I got my kids a Halifax Expresscash account but think they have to be 10 or 11.

Oo thank you! I downloaded Revolut ages ago but I haven't actually clicked on that so will look into that too.

Try Revolut. Go Henry has ridiculous fees and offers zero protection if the card is stolen etc. Revolut is brilliant and you can control everything from the app

Mazuslongtoenail · 30/10/2023 21:21

I handed in a form today that asked my 2 year old’s gender. I crossed it out and put sex. Because now gender is a much thing, we need to learn that they’re different things and use them accurately.

It’s like asking for sexuality when they mean sex. Sort of related, not the same.

Right exactly. I did ask customer service but he was unable to tell me why they needed it but just said I need to choose a "gender" to use their product. 😬 No thanks. I wouldn't even click it for myself let alone my nd 6yo. Nonsense.

Whealspeed · 30/10/2023 21:24

Hyperjar is free to use. The jars are great for helping children and adults of both sexes budget. I don't recall being asked for gender when we signed up.

There are loads of helpful options in the app that dont exist in the very expensive GoHenry. I really rate it.

This is my fear. 😥 I'm dreading the years to come. I try to explain as much as possible to dc but I am concerned.
I try to explain that anyone can wear skirts dresses etc but that we are either a girl or a boy. (She often says only girls can wear dresses and I don't want this to be picked up on by people and used as an in for gender ideology)
Where and why does/ should anyone's "gender" come into play?
The advisor told me to click non binary if she doesn't have a gender. I explained to him that I shouldn't have to click anything.

Brilliant. I think I will try that anyway as I downloaded it for me to use originally. Thanks for the info
